Book excerpt: Excerpt from Prospects for Foreign Trade in Tobacco: March 1959 In 1959, the decline is expected to be slowed by increasing gold and dollar reserves in Western Europe, principal market for U. S. Tobacco, and by growing world demand for light-type cigarettes, made mainly from flue-cured and Burley, tobaccos in which the United States specializes. Over the next decade, rising foreign production, barriers to the free movement of trade, and the price of U. S. Tobacco are likely to preclude any increase in U. S. Tobacco exports. In fact, they are more likely to contribute to a further decrease, despite steadily increasing tobacco consumption in foreign markets. Beyond that, tobacco consumption abroad may rise enough to bring total demand up to a level that will help raise U. S. Exports on an absolute basis. But the U. S. Share of the world trade is expected to go on declining. Last year that share was 33 percent compared with 34 percent in 1957, 36 percent in 1956, 38 percent in 1950-54, and 43 percent in 1947-51.
