Book excerpt: Freedom in the World, the Freedom House flagship survey whose findings have been published annually since 1972, is the standard-setting comparative assessment of global political rights and civil liberties. The survey ratings and narrative reports on 195 countries and fifteen territories are used by policymakers, the media, international corporations, civic activists, and human rights defenders to monitor trends in democracy and track improvements and setbacks in freedom worldwide. The Freedom in the World political rights and civil liberties ratings are determined through a multi-layered process of research and evaluation by a team of regional analysts and eminent scholars. The analysts used a broad range of sources of information, including foreign and domestic news reports, academic studies, nongovernmental organizations, think tanks, individual professional contacts, and visits to the region, in conducting their research. The methodology of the survey is derived in large measure from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and these standards are applied to all countries and territories, irrespective of geographical location, ethnic or religious composition, or level of economic development.

Book Synopsis Open Democracy by : Hélène Landemore
Download or read book Open Democracy written by Hélène Landemore and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2022-03-08 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To the ancient Greeks, democracy meant gathering in public and debating laws set by a randomly selected assembly of several hundred citizens. To the Icelandic Vikings, democracy meant meeting every summer in a field to discuss issues until consensus was reached. Our contemporary representative democracies are very different. Modern parliaments are gated and guarded, and it seems as if only certain people are welcome. Diagnosing what is wrong with representative government and aiming to recover some of the openness of ancient democracies, Open Democracy presents a new paradigm of democracy. Supporting a fresh nonelectoral understanding of democratic representation, Hélène Landemore demonstrates that placing ordinary citizens, rather than elites, at the heart of democratic power is not only the true meaning of a government of, by, and for the people, but also feasible and, more than ever, urgently needed. -- Cover page 4.
Book Synopsis Fudamentals of Rational Democracy by : Farooq QURAISHI
Download or read book Fudamentals of Rational Democracy written by Farooq QURAISHI and published by . This book was released on 2017-03-26 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human history is full of war, violence, crimes ... It is obvious that these are the main reasons of misery and failure of our ancestors as well as our generation. The cost of violence around the world reached a record of $14.3 trillion or 13.4 percent of global GDP in 2014. The annual cost of drugs, tobacco and alcohol just in US exceedes $700 billion dollar. Crimes costs and consequences in US has reached an average of $1 trillion annually. The worldwide costs of drugs and crimes would be ten times or more. but beside war, violence and crime there are the other challenges and threats against humankind in contemporary worldWar, violence, crimes, addiction, dictatorship, tyranny, Rubbery, inefficiency, prevention of economic and social development ..., all is caused by human irrationality. If we estimate the cost of all above mentioned crimes and wrong doings it would be a huge amount. * What Rationality means and what is the Cognitive structure of human?* How much is the actual cost of human irrationality? What are threats and problems caused by human irrationality and their effects? * By Rationalization how much could be saved and earned either in humanistic or economic terms?* How we can rationalize governments, peoples and societies? These are questions that their answers would solve contemporary economic and humanistic threats and problems. These problems are diverse and different. When people try to solve their problem in non-peaceful way they switch toward war and violence and the same most of above mentioned catastrophes are caused by human irrationality and few caused by nature that needs adaptation and mitigation. Adaptation and mitigation also needs human knowledge and wisdom that both of them are elements of rationality. In order to eradicate and prevent these catastrophes we should rationalize governments, peoples and societies. What do we mean by rationality and how we can achieve it? It is an important question that shapes our strategies for rationalization.Rationality means being reasonable. But it is not a simple logic or mathematical algorithm. In Rationality, Data, Information, knowledge, wisdom, Cognition, Reason, Decision, Emotion, Intuition, Motivation, Behavior are all contributing to each other and some of these are totally unconscious like emotion, hormone effects and we have no control over them. In order to rationalize government, we should add rationality element to democracy. We can't rationalize non-democratic government because of their everlasting struggle with people for power which is based on seflish ideologies and strategies. So we should know more about democracy and its pros and cons. Main Criticisms of Democracy are irrational voters, Efficiency of the system, Wealth disparity, Lack of political education, Benefits of a specialised society, Uncontested good, Cyclical theory of government, Political Coase Theorem, Political instability, Oppression by the majority, Mob rule, Violation of Property Rights, Timocracy and oligarchy, Role of republicanism, Moral decay, Shorttermism, Corruption within democratic governments, Unsustainability. All of above mentioned issues take us to the point that we are in need of a Rational DemocracyIn order to have a rational democracy we need to add rationality element to democracy and it can be done through a fundamental change in its structure. Current democracies are tripartite systems which have executive, legislation and Judiciary branches. By adding a scientific branch and a congress of scientists which is the representative of scientific community we can rationalize democracy. The scientific congress which is elected by scientists decides and acts on issues scientifically, legally, without bias and mistakes. The scientific congress is the main advisor of people in electing, supervising and directing government and also it is advisor and supervisor of government in all issues.

Book Synopsis Against Democracy by : Jason Brennan
Download or read book Against Democracy written by Jason Brennan and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2017-09-26 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A bracingly provocative challenge to one of our most cherished ideas and institutions Most people believe democracy is a uniquely just form of government. They believe people have the right to an equal share of political power. And they believe that political participation is good for us—it empowers us, helps us get what we want, and tends to make us smarter, more virtuous, and more caring for one another. These are some of our most cherished ideas about democracy. But Jason Brennan says they are all wrong. In this trenchant book, Brennan argues that democracy should be judged by its results—and the results are not good enough. Just as defendants have a right to a fair trial, citizens have a right to competent government. But democracy is the rule of the ignorant and the irrational, and it all too often falls short. Furthermore, no one has a fundamental right to any share of political power, and exercising political power does most of us little good. On the contrary, a wide range of social science research shows that political participation and democratic deliberation actually tend to make people worse—more irrational, biased, and mean. Given this grim picture, Brennan argues that a new system of government—epistocracy, the rule of the knowledgeable—may be better than democracy, and that it's time to experiment and find out. A challenging critique of democracy and the first sustained defense of the rule of the knowledgeable, Against Democracy is essential reading for scholars and students of politics across the disciplines. Featuring a new preface that situates the book within the current political climate and discusses other alternatives beyond epistocracy, Against Democracy is a challenging critique of democracy and the first sustained defense of the rule of the knowledgeable.
Book Synopsis Democracy Despite Itself by : Danny Oppenheimer
Download or read book Democracy Despite Itself written by Danny Oppenheimer and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2012-01-27 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why democracy is the most effective form of government despite irrational (and sometime oblivious) voters and flawed (and sometimes inept) politicians. Voters often make irrational decisions based on inaccurate and irrelevant information. Politicians are often inept, corrupt, or out of touch with the will of the people. Elections can be determined by the design of the ballot and the gerrymandered borders of a district. And yet, despite voters who choose candidates according to the boxer–brief dichotomy and politicians who struggle to put together a coherent sentence, democracy works exceptionally well: citizens of democracies are healthier, happier, and freer than citizens of other countries. In Democracy Despite Itself, Danny Oppenheimer, a psychologist, and Mike Edwards, a political scientist, explore this paradox: How can democracy lead to such successful outcomes when the defining characteristic of democracy—elections—is so flawed? Oppenheimer and Edwards argue that democracy works because regular elections, no matter how flawed, produce a variety of unintuitive, positive consequences. The brilliance of democracy, write Oppenheimer and Edwards, does not lie in the people's ability to pick superior leaders. It lies in the many ways that it subtly encourages the flawed people and their flawed leaders to work toward building a better society.

Book Synopsis Democracy and Education by : John Dewey
Download or read book Democracy and Education written by John Dewey and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 1916 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: . Renewal of Life by Transmission. The most notable distinction between living and inanimate things is that the former maintain themselves by renewal. A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.
Book Synopsis American Government 3e by : Glen Krutz
Download or read book American Government 3e written by Glen Krutz and published by . This book was released on 2023-05-12 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Black & white print. American Government 3e aligns with the topics and objectives of many government courses. Faculty involved in the project have endeavored to make government workings, issues, debates, and impacts meaningful and memorable to students while maintaining the conceptual coverage and rigor inherent in the subject. With this objective in mind, the content of this textbook has been developed and arranged to provide a logical progression from the fundamental principles of institutional design at the founding, to avenues of political participation, to thorough coverage of the political structures that constitute American government. The book builds upon what students have already learned and emphasizes connections between topics as well as between theory and applications. The goal of each section is to enable students not just to recognize concepts, but to work with them in ways that will be useful in later courses, future careers, and as engaged citizens. In order to help students understand the ways that government, society, and individuals interconnect, the revision includes more examples and details regarding the lived experiences of diverse groups and communities within the United States. The authors and reviewers sought to strike a balance between confronting the negative and harmful elements of American government, history, and current events, while demonstrating progress in overcoming them. In doing so, the approach seeks to provide instructors with ample opportunities to open discussions, extend and update concepts, and drive deeper engagement.
Book Synopsis Democracy in Theory and Practice by : Frederick G. Whelan
Download or read book Democracy in Theory and Practice written by Frederick G. Whelan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-31 with total page 1396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Democracy in Theory and Practice presents an authoritative overview of democratic theory today. Its distinctive approach links theory to practice, emphasizing the wide variety of institutions and procedures through which core democratic principles are implemented and the normative and practical dimensions of the choices to be made among these alternatives. Designed for courses at both the undergraduate and graduate level, the book features eighteen chapters organized thematically and divided into sections and subsections for easy reference; historical and current examples, citations for specific ideas, annotated references, and further readings throughout enhance the volume's utility for students, scholars, and researchers. Sidebars give biographical sketches of classic theorists and democratic ideas from the US founders and constitutional tradition. Featured topics discussed include: Majority Rule; Participation; Deliberation; Accountability; Representation; Constitutionalism; Electoral Laws; Parties; Legislative, Executive, and Judicial Functions. The Boundary Problem; The "All-Affected" Principle; Contested Senses of Liberal and Procedural Democracy; The Pros and Cons of Term Limits; Proportional Representation; Referendums; Problems of Democratic Transparency and Reversibility. Written by a leading authority in the field, Frederick G. Whelan encourages us to think of the many alternative ways of putting democracy into practice and of these alternatives as requiring choices. This diversity means that there is no unique or correct democratic outcome from a given set of preferences, since outcomes are shaped by the methods followed in reaching them.
