Book excerpt: These guidelines provide recommendations that outline the critical aspects of infection prevention and control. The recommendations were developed using the best available evidence and consensus methods by the Infection Control Steering Committee. They have been prioritised as key areas to prevent and control infection in a healthcare facility. It is recognised that the level of risk may differ according to the different types of facility and therefore some recommendations should be justified by risk assessment. When implementing these recommendations all healthcare facilities need to consider the risk of transmission of infection and implement according to their specific setting and circumstances.

Book excerpt: Surgical site infections are caused by bacteria that get in through incisions made during surgery. They threaten the lives of millions of patients each year and contribute to the spread of antibiotic resistance. In low- and middle-income countries, 11% of patients who undergo surgery are infected in the process. In Africa, up to 20% of women who have a caesarean section contract a wound infection, compromising their own health and their ability to care for their babies. But surgical site infections are not just a problem for poor countries. In the United States, they contribute to patients spending more than 400 000 extra days in hospital at a cost of an additional US $10 billion per year. No international evidence-based guidelines had previously been available before WHO launched its global guidelines on the prevention of surgical site infection on 3 November 2016, and there are inconsistencies in the interpretation of evidence and recommendations in existing national guidelines. These new WHO guidelines are valid for any country and suitable to local adaptations, and take account of the strength of available scientific evidence, the cost and resource implications, and patient values and preferences.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A System of Physiologic Therapeutics, Vol. 5: A Practical Exposition of the Methods, Other Than Drug-Giving, Useful in the Prevention of the Disease and in the Treatment of the Sick; Prophylaxis Personal Hygiene, Civic Hygiene Care of the Sick The following pages contain an epitome of what is essentially the Natural History of Medicine; including the important facts, thus far learned, regarding the origin, dissemination, and prevention of disease. Beyond its place in the System of which it is a part, the work virtually forms an Introduction to the Science of Medicine. It treats especially of the Preservation of Health and the Prevention of Disease, seeking a basis for intelligent prophylaxis in a study of morbid processes and their causation; but this has necessitated a wide range of inquiry. The discussion of Etiology must take into account the psychic as well as the physical characteristics of men; the heredity as well as the constitution of the individual; the intrinsic failures and perversions, as well as the environmental factors, that may disturb mind and body. The artificial conditions of civilization, the diversity, complexity, and strenuosity of the activities of modern life, the reciprocal influences of individuals upon communities and of communities upon individuals, render it necessary, alike in the study of Personal Hygiene and of Public Health, to consider - at least by allusion - many aspects of Sociology; involving questions of Economics, of Engineering, of Manufacturing, of Architecture, of Pedagogics, of Commercial Intercourse, of Taxation, of Municipal Government. Certain fundamentals of Pathology must be presented, together with the principal facts of Epidemiology, much of Parasitology, and - in view of recent discoveries as to the conveyance of infection by insects - something of Entomology. The Care of the Sick room is a primary factor in the restriction of epidemics, and in no other connection can Nursing, an important branch of Therapeutics, so appropriately be discussed from the physician's viewpoint. Book excerpt: The WHO Guidelines on Hand Hygiene in Health Care provide health-care workers (HCWs), hospital administrators and health authorities with a thorough review of evidence on hand hygiene in health care and specific recommendations to improve practices and reduce transmission of pathogenic microorganisms to patients and HCWs. The present Guidelines are intended to be implemented in any situation in which health care is delivered either to a patient or to a specific group in a population. Therefore, this concept applies to all settings where health care is permanently or occasionally performed, such as home care by birth attendants. Definitions of health-care settings are proposed in Appendix 1. These Guidelines and the associated WHO Multimodal Hand Hygiene Improvement Strategy and an Implementation Toolkit (http://www.who.int/gpsc/en/) are designed to offer health-care facilities in Member States a conceptual framework and practical tools for the application of recommendations in practice at the bedside. While ensuring consistency with the Guidelines recommendations, individual adaptation according to local regulations, settings, needs, and resources is desirable. This extensive review includes in one document sufficient technical information to support training materials and help plan implementation strategies. The document comprises six parts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Not since the 1965 pUblication of Skin Bacteria lind Their Role in Infection has our knowledge of clinical skin microbiology been reviewed and sum marized. In the more than a decade and a half since that publication, we have seen a careful reevaluation of the ideas and information current in 1965 and the development of important new discoveries and information. This volume, Skin Microbiology: Relevance to Clinical Infection, reviews developments in the field since 1965 and summarizes the current state ofthe art in thirty-six carefully prepared chapters. Emphasis is on the clinical per spective rather than straight microbiology, although we include enough of the latter to put the clinical aspects in a proper scientific context. The authors contributing to this volume represent a cross section of authorities in the many specialty areas that contribute to our knowledge of skin microbiology. They include investigators in microbiology, infectious disease, epidemiology, surgery, pediatrics, and dermatology. Significant ef forts have been made to minimize repetition and overlap in the various chapters. In some cases, however, information is deliberately repeated in order to provide for the reader a necessary frame of reference. We hope that this volume will be of value to dermatologists, microbio logists, pediatricians, surgeons, public health workers, nurses, and others in volved in the diagnosis and treatment of dermatologic problems caused by bacteria. The editors acknowledge with appreciation the assistance of Drs. A. Allen, F. Marzulli, F. Engley, G. Hildick-Smith, A. Kligman, M. Bruch, H. Eiermann, and D. Taplin.

This book was released on 2017-01-31 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Health care-associated infections (HAI) are one of the most common adverse events in care delivery and a major public health problem with an impact on morbidity, mortality and quality of life. At any one time, up to 7% of patients in developed and 10% in developing countries will acquire at least one HAI. These infections also present a significant economic burden at the societal level. However, a large percentage are preventable through effective infection prevention and control (IPC) measures. These new guidelines on the core components of IPC programmes at the national and facility level will enhance the capacity of Member States to develop and implement effective technical and behaviour modifying interventions. They form a key part of WHO strategies to prevent current and future threats from infectious diseases such as Ebola, strengthen health service resilience, help combat antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and improve the overall quality of health care delivery. They are also intended to support countries in the development of their own national protocols for IPC and AMR action plans and to support health care facilities as they develop or strengthen their own approaches to IPC. These are the first international evidence-based guidelines on the core components of IPC programmes. These new WHO guidelines are applicable for any country and suitable to local adaptations, and take account of the strength of available scientific evidence, the cost and resource implications, and patient values and preferences.
