Book excerpt: This collection of essays is written by biblical scholars from around the world who are friends and students of the distinguished American biblical scholar Gene M. Tucker, who was President of the Society of Biblical Literature in 1996. His scholarly interest has been wide-ranging, from a passion to understand the biblical prophets to enduring probing of the theology that gave rise to the Hebrew Bible, and this book embodies these wide-ranging interests. Each essay probes the issues of prophetic studies and the theology of the Hebrew Bible. The essays include an examination of the role of W.F. Albright as a prophetic figure in the history of biblical studies and an examination of the superscriptions in the book of the Twelve.

This book was released on 2018 with total page 697 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study endeavors to expand the horizon of possibility for what the texts within the corpus of the Bible known as the Latter Prophets can be qua literature, and, with that, to introduce a reading strategy that pays greater attention to textual speakers and their internal speaking situations for the purpose of delimiting compositional units and establishing coherence. Biblical scholars have long shared the view that the texts of the Latter Prophets correspond to real speech that was eventually written down and, over time, amplified. More recent attempts to view the Latter Prophets as literary tend to focus on such expansions or on different elements of the texts' style. However, these studies have not succeeded, in theory or practice, in making and maintaining the necessary distinction between the phenomenon of the literature, on the one hand, and the historical phenomena of prophets and prophecy of which the texts continue to be seen as derivative, on the other hand. Indeed, despite claims to the contrary, contemporary approaches do not necessarily move beyond older methods for the study of these texts. By contrast, this study approaches the Latter Prophets in conversation with prominent theories of literature and literariness, such as fictive speech acts and textually independent fields of reference. Utilizing four principle issues, or paradigms, with which the study of biblical prophecy is typically undertaken (cross-cultural comparison; historicity and historicism; orality and writing; and the poetics of biblical prophecy), it then examines select passages in accordance with each (respectively: textual exemplars of non-biblical prophecy, especially the Deir 'Alla inscription; the book of Amos, especially Amos 1-3, 7:10-17; the book of Jeremiah, especially Jeremiah 1-6, 36; and Second Isaiah, especially Isaiah 40-48, 49) in order to yield new interpretative insights and collective possibilities. The work thereby illumines the uniqueness of the prophetic texts of the Bible and offers a richer understanding of their nature and function as creative artworks which construct prophets and prophecy of a certain type rather than as merely imitative of reality.

Book excerpt: This book explores recent developments in South African Pentecostalism, focusing on new prophetic churches. The chapters engage with a number of paradigm shifts in Christology, identified as complementing Christ, competing with Christ, removing Christ and replacing Christ. What are the implications of these shifts? Does it mean that believers no longer believe in Christ but in their leaders? Does it shift believers’ faith towards materiality than the person of Christ? This volume will be valuable for scholars of African Christianity and in particular those interested in the neo-prophetic movement and Christology in a South African context.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many cycles predicting the “end of times” fill our modern dialog--from the coming of the Millennium to 2012. Robin Robertson helps to clarify these prophesies and offers insight into the central issues of our challenges and the experience and their life changing implications. For eighteen hundred years, the prophecies in the Book of Revelation have captured the collective Western imagination. Saint John’s rich imagery and the dramatic urgency of the looming disasters he predicts have both fascinated and frightened us with its apparent message that the end of time is near. Robin Robertson, Ph.D. deciphers the mystical theology and visions of the prophets, seers and shamans. His analysis incorporates the insights of modern mathematics and Chaos Theory, as well as his personal insights gained through his work as a Jungian therapist and teacher. Robertson holds a mirror to humanity’s need to know Self and God. He explains that Saint John’s vision foretells the massive change in consciousness that is happening in our time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For millennia plant and animal species have received little sustained attention as subjects of Christian theology and ethics in their own right. Focused on the human dilemma of sin and redemptive grace, theology has considered the doctrine of creation to be mainly an overture to the main drama of human being`s relationship to God. What value does the natural world have within the framework of religious belief? The crisis of biodiversity in our day, when species are going extinct at more than 1,000 times the natural rate, renders this question acutely important. Standard perspectives need to be realigned; theology needs to look out of the window, so to speak as well as in the mirror. Ask the Beasts: Darwin and the God of Love leads to the conclusion that love of the natural world is an intrinsic element of faith in God and that far from being an add-on, ecological care is at the centre of moral life.

Old Testament scholar Christopher R. Seitz has written Prophecy and Hermeneutics as a way of revisiting, from the ground floor up, what gave rise to studies of the prophets in our modern period. In addition, Seitz clearly shows that a new conceptuality of prophecy, hermeneutics, history, and time is needed--one that is appropriate to current views on Isaiah and the Twelve. Scholars, students, professors, and theological libraries will find this an essential foundational resource.
