Book Synopsis Isaiah and Prophetic Traditions in the Book of Revelation by : Jan Fekkes
Download or read book Isaiah and Prophetic Traditions in the Book of Revelation written by Jan Fekkes and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 1994-01-01 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is concerned with the influence of biblical and prophetic traditions on the author of the book of Revelation, and in particular his use of the prophecies of Isaiah. First, John's own prophetic consciousness and expression is compared with previous Israelite-Jewish and early Christian prophetic conventions. This is followed by an evaluation of John's use of the OT in general, including a discussion of methodology for isolating allusions, the question of the validity of the terms quotation and allusion in Revelation, and the presence of thematic patterns in the author's choice of Scripture. All this is foundational to the main portion of the work (Ch. III), where a detailed analysis is undertaken to determine the validity of all proposed allusions to Isaiah in the book of Revelation. Of the 72 suggested allusions treated, 40 were judged as certain or virtually certain, 24 were considered as unlikely or doubtful, and 8 were appraised as probable or possible. Those allusions which were accepted received further evaluation to see how and why they were used by John, with special attention given to the tradition-history of the passage used, and the possible interpretative techniques employed. A variety of exegetical and literary devices were uncovered, including the use of catchwords, inclusio, repetition of texts, exploitation of Hebrew parallelism, and the collection of texts around a central theme. Furthermore, John's use of Isaiah is concentrated in basic areas, with clusters of Isaiah texts appearing in specific sections of Revelation. The principal Isaian themes with which he is interested are holy war and the Day of the Lord, oracles against the nations, and salvation prophecies relating to the community of faith and the restored and glorified Jerusalem. It was concluded that on the whole, John's use of Isaiah is not random, and he does not use the OT texts merely as a visionary resource for language, phrases, structural patterns etc. But he consciously carries on the prophecies of his biblical predecessors and invokes their authority. The remnants and results of John's interpretation of Isaiah presuppose exegetical activity and application prior to the vision experience and it is likely that at least some of his intended readers were familiar not only with his theological concerns, but also with his methodological approach.

Book Synopsis Divining History by : Jayne Svenungsson
Download or read book Divining History written by Jayne Svenungsson and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2016-08-01 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For millennia, messianic visions of redemption have inspired men and women to turn against unjust and oppressive orders. Yet these very same traditions are regularly decried as antecedents to the violent and authoritarian ideologies of modernity. Informed in equal parts by theology and historical theory, this book offers a provocative exploration of this double-edged legacy. Author Jayne Svenungsson rigorously pursues a middle path between utopian arrogance and an enervated postmodernism, assessing the impact of Jewish and Christian theologies of history on subsequent thinkers, and in the process identifying a web of spiritual and intellectual motifs extending from ancient Jewish prophets to contemporary radicals such as Giorgio Agamben and Slavoj Zizek.

Slack provides a powerful and much needed balance that will allow Church leaders to see the great potential for blessing in the prophetic while reducing risk. Through Scripture, Slack offers leaders, from all doctrinal backgrounds, a faith-building process for realizing prophecy that leads to Church edification. (1 Cor. 14:3) In Reclaiming Prophecy, discover: • How the Gospel opens the door to prophecy without all the problems • How the Spirit equips prophetic teams • How prophetic discipleship is the key to unlocking this ministry • How Church leaders can discern Christ-glorifying prophetic ministry • How to better understand the heart and mindset of the prophetic person • How to create meaningful training for prophetic growth This book is a must-have for every pastor or Church leader who desires to scripturally understand and implement prophetic ministry.

Book Synopsis Prophetic Figures of the Old Testament by : Nyamayabo Mashavakure
Download or read book Prophetic Figures of the Old Testament written by Nyamayabo Mashavakure and published by Author House. This book was released on 2014-12-22 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is nothing particularly new or unique about the subject matter of Prophetic Figures of the Old Testament. In fact, greater authorities have covered it better many times before, and this endeavour is hugely reliant upon and indebted to these great minds for this current work. The hope is that readers can enjoy more of what they have already had, from many different quarters, presented through a different hand. It is also the hope that beginning learners of divinity or biblical studies can find this book greatly enjoyable and inspiring. In the main, the prophetic figures represented in the wording of the book title certainly refer to persons called or identifiable as prophets in the Bible. But this is also extended to include some objects, occurrences, and places that prophets may have encountered and even made use of in the performance of their prophetic duties. The interplay of these and the prophet is generally taken to signify the comprehensiveness or completeness of prophecy, in this book. The reader is invited to interrogate the relationship of the prophet and this environment in order to enjoy more fully the religious, historical, political, intellectual, and inspirational aspects one goes through in respect of the issues selected and commented on. The reader is encouraged to think beyond what one reads. Any statement or comment is not meant to be some kind of definitive prescription but is meant to arouse thought and more thought. More important, readers should always be in constant contact with the origin of the materials spoken about in this book - that is, the Bible. There is obviously no way in which selective consideration of items picked on a rather random, personal, subjective basis can replace the source from which these are originally taken. Reading of Prophetic Figures of the Old Testament should therefore always depend on knowledge of, or familiarity with, the background information provided in the Bible.
