Book Synopsis Jesus the Seer by : Ben Witherington III
Download or read book Jesus the Seer written by Ben Witherington III and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 20174-10-01 with total page 629 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increasingly, scholars recognize that prophetic traditions, expressions, and experiences stand at the heart of most religions in the ancient Mediterranean world. This is no less true for the world of Judaism and Jesus. Ben Witherington III offers an extensive, cross-cultural survey of the broader expressions of prophecy in its ancient Mediterranean context, beginning with Mari, moving to biblical figures not often regarded as prophets‒‒Balaam, Deborah, Moses, and Aaron‒‒and to the apocalyptic seer in postexilic prophecy, showing that no single pattern describes all prophetic figures. The consequence is that different aspects of Jesus’s activity touch upon prophetic predecessors: his miracles, on Elijah and Elisha; his self-understanding as the Son of Man, on Daniel and 1 Enoch; his warnings of woe and judgment, on the “writing prophets” in Judean tradition; and his messianic entry into Jerusalem, on Zechariah 9. Witherington also surveys the phenomenon of apocalyptic prophecy in early Christianity, including Paul, Revelation, the Didache, Hermas, and the Montanist movement. Jesus the Seer is a worthy complement to Witherington’s other volume on Jesus, Jesus the Sage (Fortress Press, 2000).

Book Synopsis The Progress of Revelation in the Old Testament by : Gerard Van Groningen
Download or read book The Progress of Revelation in the Old Testament written by Gerard Van Groningen and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2006-08-01 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two issues in particular engaged me [when studying in seminary and graduate school]. Did God, the sovereign covenant Lord, actually communicate with men in human language? And did this Lord actually enable men to infallibly record in writing what he had made known to them? . . . The result was that I increasingly realized that unless I had confidence that the Scriptures were authentic, authoritative, and wholly reliable I would not have the certainty and conviction needed for preaching and teaching truths that I and all other sinful persons required for the assurance of the forgiveness of sin, salvation and God-honoring service. This book is, in a real sense, my answer to the questions I wrestled with initially. It is a testimony to the assurance and peace I had as I taught in Christian educational institutions. --from the Preface
Book Synopsis Henry Stubbe and the Beginnings of Islam by : Nabil Matar
Download or read book Henry Stubbe and the Beginnings of Islam written by Nabil Matar and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2013-12-17 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Henry Stubbe (1632–1676) was a revolutionary English scholar who understood Islam as a monotheistic revelation in continuity with Judaism and Christianity. His major work, An Account of the Rise and Progress of Mahometanism, was the first English text to positively document the Prophet Muhammad’s life, celebrate the Qur’an as a divine revelation, and praise the Muslim toleration of Christians, undermining a long legacy of European prejudice and hostility. Nabil Matar, a leading scholar of Islamic-Western relations, standardizes Stubbe’s text and situates it within England’s theological climate. He shows how, to draw a positive portrait of Muhammad, Stubbe embraced travelogues, early church histories, Arabic chronicles, Latin commentaries, and studies on Jewish customs and scriptures, produced in the language of Islam and in the midst of the Islamic polity.
Book Synopsis Transformation a Work in Progress by : Al Edmondson
Download or read book Transformation a Work in Progress written by Al Edmondson and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2019-04-08 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: God created us for good works that were planned in ages past. He knew the future and our place in it. While participation is a duty clearly stated in scripture, many Christians are unaware of God’s desire for their mobilization. Others may not be carefully listening for his voice or, regrettably, dismissing him as if their participation is optional. No Christian is exempt from his command to be transformed into spiritual awareness, to grow in biblical knowledge, and in parallel, to participate in the building of his kingdom. The disengaged miss the joy-filled opportunities that enable personal growth through work that fulfills their responsibilities within the church body. The earth is blooming with 7.5 billion souls. More than ever before the entire body must mobilize to effectively represent the stature of Christ. We are his hands, his feet, his fragrance, and his voice in our world. This twelve-week study lays out God’s plan to advance the gospel and discipleship through the work of his redeemed family, endowed by the Holy Spirit with gifts and power to change our world. The study addresses issues that weaken Christian resolve, compete for our attention and time, and even cripple his people. These issues require a serious call to duty.

Book Synopsis The State of Social Progress of Islamic Societies by : Habib Tiliouine
Download or read book The State of Social Progress of Islamic Societies written by Habib Tiliouine and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-08 with total page 704 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook addresses the historical background of the Islamic world and reviews its basic past intellectual achievements. It studies social progress of these regions and sub-regions in comparison with other parts of the world. It uses large data sets and well established statistically weighted Indexes in order to assess the nature and pace of the multiple facets of social change in member states of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). The handbook extensively discusses the main challenges confronting the Islamic nations in the social, economic, political, and ideological fields. Though it is recognizable that social change in the Islamic World is generally positive, it remains highly variable in pace and there is room to speed it up to the benefit of millions of deprived Muslim people. Hence, the book studies the different propositions and programs of action, such as the United Nations’ Millennium Development Campaign and the OIC’s Ten-Year Programme of Action to present an integrated and comprehensive agenda of action to help improve the situation in the Islamic World.

Book Synopsis Power and Progress by : Alexander Green
Download or read book Power and Progress written by Alexander Green and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2019-09-01 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The philosopher and biblical commentator Joseph Ibn Kaspi (1280–1345) was a provocative Jewish thinker of the medieval era whose works have generally been overlooked by modern scholars. Power and Progress by Alexander Green is the first book in English to focus on a central aspect of his work: Ibn Kaspi's philosophy of history. Green argues that Ibn Kaspi understood history as guided by two distinct but interdependent forces: power and progress, both of which he saw manifest in the biblical narrative. Ibn Kaspi discerned that the use of power to shape history is predominantly seen in the political competition between kingdoms. Yet he also believed that there is historical progress in the continuous development and dissemination of knowledge over time. This he derived from the biblical vision of the divine chariot and its varied descriptions across different biblical texts, each revealing more details of a complex, multifaceted picture. Although these two concepts of what drives history are separate, they are also reliant upon one another. National survival is dependent on the progress of knowledge of the order of nature, and the progress of knowledge is reliant on national success. In this way, Green reveals Ibn Kaspi to be more than a mere commentator on texts, but a highly innovative thinker whose insights into the subtleties of the Bible produced a view of history that is both groundbreaking and original.
