Book excerpt: Economic Thought and History looks at the relationship between facts and thought in historical economic research, viewing it in the context of periods of economic crisis and providing detailed analyses of methods used in determining the bond between economic history and economic theory. This interdisciplinary collection brings together international researchers in the history of economic thought and economic history in order to confront varying approaches to the study of economic facts and ideas, rethinking boundaries, methodologies and the object of their disciplines. The chapters explore the relationship between economic thought and economic theory from a variety of perspectives, exploring the relationship between history and economics, and the boundaries defining the history of economic thought, in terms of both single authors and schools of thought. The book offers particular insights on the Italian tradition of thought. The uniquely interdisciplinary and analytical approach presented here bridges the methodological gap between these disciplines, unearthing a fertile common ground of research. This book is intended for Postgraduate students conducting further research into the field, or for professors and academics of economic history and history of economic thought.

Book excerpt: Exactly what does a solar eclipse mean for economic trends, for geopolitical affairs, and for the market actions and trends that can create the potential upheavals so likely in those broad-based arenas? That's the primary focus of this book. As a planet, we get at least two solar eclipses during each calendar year, as the shifting celestial dynamics of Earth, Moon, and Sun create specific alignments at predictable intervals. Those solar eclipses vary in scope and intensity - some are partial eclipses, with the Moon just covering a portion of the Sun's visible orb. Others are annular events, with the corona of the Sun creating a "ring of fire" effect as the Moon obscures most of the solar surface. Still others are total eclipses, with the Sun completely hidden behind the Moon. Even though solar eclipses are not rare, some of them take on much stronger roles in the public consciousness than others. That fluctuation in awareness is largely due to the attention that's generated in the specific geographic areas in which the eclipse is visible to the naked eye. When an eclipse is going to be visible locally it gets lots of press in advance. But if it can't been seen from our own back yard, we tend to ignore it altogether. In this book we are concerned not only with the distinctive features of solar eclipses, but also with their likely impact on global and geopolitical events, on the public consciousness in America and throughout the world, on the financial and equities markets, and on our personal lives as well. In examining those connections, we look at significant precursor eclipses from the past, examining the astrological chart for the current solar eclipse and its alignments as a transiting factor to the horoscopes of selected financial entities and international markets, and using a variety of astrological tools to project longer-lasting consequences during the months following the date of the solar eclipse. Each solar eclipse has effects that last at least until the next eclipse, and sometimes much longer than that. This study provides individual perspectives as well as global ones, with the clear understanding that the two are intrinsically interdependent. As we connect with planetary rhythms and cosmic cycles, we not only get a sense of just how finite our own petty cares actually are; we also gain the reassurance and ultimate sense of purpose that an ordered universe has to offer us - we can understand that our lives are not random and we are not condemned to be victims. Pausing to contemplate natural rhythms and their cosmic implications can give us many rich rewards in unexpected ways. From an individual perspective, we can learn a lot from our natal horoscopes, which reveal the unique imprint of cosmic energies that make us the remarkable people twe are, with all our latent capabilities and our potential for happiness and fulfillment. While we may see our idiosyncrasies and foibles in uncomfortable clarity, we can also confirm who we are and what we can contribute to the world around us. At a global level, we can use the power of astrology to enrich our experience and comprehension. Through the study of mundane astrology - the branch of the cosmic science connecting geopolitical and economic affairs with planetary cycles - we can gain a more sanguine attitude toward world events. We no longer have to succumb to fear or submit to demagoguery, but can choose more reasoned and tolerant assumptions instead. That's where the power of eclipses comes in. Of all the planetary dynamics influencing world affairs, eclipses are the most potent. Each eclipse offers new circumstances to ponder, new lessons to learn, and new paradigms for our role in global affairs. Along the way, we can strengthen our own individual character, discover fresh opportunities to enrich and enhance our personal well-being, and open ourselves up to new paths of service and social contributio

Total solar eclipses seem to trigger seismic events upon the lands and seas their shadows touch. On 21 August 2017, the lower 48 states had a solar eclipse draw its mysterious darkness of 90 to 100 percent totality over four of some of America's most dangerous seismic and tsunami-generating quake zones. If the pattern of seismic activity seen in the Great Eclipses of the past are repeated in the Great American Eclipse of 2017, then a series of potential major quakes of magnitude 6 to a megathrust of magnitude 9 could follow in the next 5 years. World-renowned prophecy scholar and Nostradamus expert John Hogue is author of over 1,000 articles and 46 books (1,180,000 copies sold) in 20 languages. Hogue strives to take readers "back to the present" empowering them to create a better destiny through meditation.

Book excerpt: On August 21, 2017, from coast to coast across the United States, millions of eyes will be turned to the heavens during a spectacular total eclipse of the Sun. The Great American Eclipse has captured the public imagination to such a profound degree that eclipse parties are being planned, commemorative eclipse souvenirs are being marketed, and hotels near the eclipse path are booked to capacity. But what does this celestial event really mean? Aside from providing a much-needed temporary relief from the stress of political posturing and reality-TV sensationalism, what difference can we expect it to make in our lives? Those are the questions that Tim Bost answers in this breakthrough new book. Bost, the author of Mercury, Money & The Markets and Gann Secrets Revealed, goes behind the scenes to expose the inner workings of The Big One, the remarkable solar eclipse that's unprecedented in the living memory of most Americans. He traces the current eclipse series back to its origins in 1639, and reviews the stock market effects connected with it during the past 100 years. He looks at two precursor eclipses that give us clues about what we can expect, and he names future dates and forecasts for months following the eclipse. And that's not all. In the pages of this comprehensive, massively illustrated book you'll find all the details on: Modern tools for understanding eclipses. Markets to trade - and trades to avoid. What the eclipse will do to Donald Trump, Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong Un. The eclipse effects on currencies, grains, and precious metals. The outlook for BitCoin and the future of crypto-currencies. The importance of midpoint structures in eclipse analysis. Eclipse connections with immigration and religious wars. Specific strategies for profiting from the solar eclipse. Eclipse impacts on key markets around the globe. Exact dates for future eclipse activations. And much, much more!

Book excerpt: Building on recent developments in biblical studies, this book introduces the prophetic literature of the Old Testament against the background of today's postmodern context and crisis of meaning. Pulsating with anxiety over the empire--Assyrian, Babylonian, and Persian--the prophet corpus is a disturbing cultural expression of lament and chaos. Danger, disjunction, and disaster bubble beneath the surface of virtually every prophetic text. Sometimes in denial, sometimes in despair, and sometimes in defiance, the readers of this literature find themselves living at the edge of time, immediately before, during, or after the collapse of longstanding symbolic, cultural, and geo-political structures. These written prophecies not only reflect the social location of trauma, but are also a complex response. More specifically, prophetic texts are thick meaning-making maps, tapestries of hope that help at-risk communities survive.

Book excerpt: “Uncompromising and unconventional . . . Cornel West is an eloquent prophet with attitude.” — Newsweek“ "A timely analysis about the current state of democratic systems in America." — The Boston Globe In Democracy Matters, Cornel West argues that if America is to become a better steward of democratization around the world, we must first wake up to the long history of corruption that has plagued our own democracy: racism, free market fundamentalism, aggressive militarism, and escalating authoritarianism. This impassioned and empowering call for the revitalization of America's democracy, by one of our most distinctive and compelling social critics, will reshape the raging national debate about America's role in today's troubled world.

Book excerpt: A Washington Post Notable Nonfiction Book for 2011 One of The Economist's 2011 Books of the Year In Reckless Endangerment, Gretchen Morgenson exposes how the watchdogs who were supposed to protect the country from financial harm were actually complicit in the actions that finally blew up the American economy. Drawing on previously untapped sources and building on original research from coauthor Joshua Rosner—who himself raised early warnings with the public and investors, and kept detailed records—Morgenson connects the dots that led to this fiasco. Morgenson and Rosner draw back the curtain on Fannie Mae, the mortgage-finance giant that grew, with the support of the Clinton administration, through the 1990s, becoming a major opponent of government oversight even as it was benefiting from public subsidies. They expose the role played not only by Fannie Mae executives but also by enablers at Countrywide Financial, Goldman Sachs, the Federal Reserve, HUD, Congress, and the biggest players on Wall Street, to show how greed, aggression, and fear led countless officials to ignore warning signs of an imminent disaster. Character-rich and definitive in its analysis, and with a new afterword that brings the story up to date, this is the one account of the financial crisis you must read.

Book excerpt: Part of the Jewish Encounter series From Elie Wiesel, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, comes a magical book that introduces us to the towering figure of Rashi—Rabbi Shlomo Yitzchaki—the great biblical and Talmudic commentator of the Middle Ages. Wiesel brilliantly evokes the world of medieval European Jewry, a world of profound scholars and closed communities ravaged by outbursts of anti-Semitism and decimated by the Crusades. The incomparable scholar Rashi, whose phrase-by-phrase explication of the oral law has been included in every printing of the Talmud since the fifteenth century, was also a spiritual and religious leader: His perspective, encompassing both the mundane and the profound, is timeless. Wiesel’s Rashi is a heartbroken witness to the suffering of his people, and through his responses to major religious questions of the day we see still another side of this greatest of all interpreters of the sacred writings. Both beginners and advanced students of the Bible rely on Rashi’s groundbreaking commentary for simple text explanations and Midrashic interpretations. Wiesel, a descendant of Rashi, proves an incomparable guide who enables us to appreciate both the lucidity of Rashi’s writings and the milieu in which they were formed.

Book excerpt: Jihad vs. McWorld is a groundbreaking work, an elegant and illuminating analysis of the central conflict of our times: consumerist capitalism versus religious and tribal fundamentalism. These diametrically opposed but strangely intertwined forces are tearing apart--and bringing together--the world as we know it, undermining democracy and the nation-state on which it depends. On the one hand, consumer capitalism on the global level is rapidly dissolving the social and economic barriers between nations, transforming the world's diverse populations into a blandly uniform market. On the other hand, ethnic, religious, and racial hatreds are fragmenting the political landscape into smaller and smaller tribal units. Jihad vs. McWorld is the term that distinguished writer and political scientist Benjamin R. Barber has coined to describe the powerful and paradoxical interdependence of these forces. In this important new book, he explores the alarming repercussions of this potent dialectic for democracy. A work of persuasive originality and penetrating insight, Jihad vs. McWorld holds up a sharp, clear lens to the dangerous chaos of the post-Cold War world. Critics and political leaders have already heralded Benjamin R. Barber's work for its bold vision and moral courage. Jihad vs. McWorld is an essential text for anyone who wants to understand our troubled present and the crisis threatening our future.
