Book Synopsis Terrain Analysis by Electromagnetic Means by : Jerry R. Lundien
Download or read book Terrain Analysis by Electromagnetic Means written by Jerry R. Lundien and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laboratory tests were conducted with radar sensors to detect the presence of and measure the depth to subsurface interfaces when the surface was bare, and to determine the influence of vegetation at various stages of growth on radar responses. A secondary purpose was to continue earlier studies to relate radar returns and the electrical constants that they provided to moisture content and density of samples. Large laboratory samples were prepared at various moisture contents and densities and with various depths to a subsurface metal plate. Standard pulsed radar sensors operating with frequencies of 297, 5870, 9375, and 34,543 megacycles/sec and directed at various angles of incidence to the surface were employed. The results of this laboratory study indicate that the standard pulsed radar sensors can provide information that will permit an estimate of the moisture content of deep, homogeneous soil samples and the detection of surface vegetation of various heights. Radar signatures of vegetation-covered soil were more significantly altered at Ka-, X-, and C-band frequencies than at P-band frequencies. However, standard pulsed radar sensors used monochromatically cannot provide information for predicting depth to subsurface interfaces or for directly indicating the presence of a subsurface interface.
Book Synopsis Instruments, Travel and Science by : Marie Noëlle Bourguet
Download or read book Instruments, Travel and Science written by Marie Noëlle Bourguet and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-08-29 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are now accustomed to conceive of science as an instrumental activity, producing numbers, measurements and graphs by means of sophisticated devices. This book investigates the historical process that gave rise to this instrumental culture. The contributors trace the displacement of instruments across the globe, the spread of practices or precision and the circulation and appropriation of skills and knowledge. Through comparative and contextual approaches, the volume confronts the tension between the local and the global, examining the process of the universalization of science. Bringing together case studies ranging from the seventeenth to the twentieth centuries, contributors discuss French, German and British initiatives, as well as the knowledge and techniques of travellers in countries such as India, Africa, South East Asia and the Americas. Students and researchers interested in the history of science in both Western and non-Western cultures will find this book a valuable and thought-provoking read.

Book excerpt: The deep ocean is home to some of the most unusual of all fishes. This book is the first Fish Physiology volume devoted to these bizarre undersea creatures. Practically every organ system is affected by the constraints imposed by benthic pressure, the absence of light, and the relatively scarce supply of both food and mates. Deep Sea Fishes demonstrates how these fishes living in extremely harsh conditions metabolize, behave, and evolve.
