Book excerpt: Samples of inclusive [gamma] + 2 jet and [gamma] + 3 jet events collected by the D0 experiment with an integrated luminosity of about 1 fb−1 in p{bar p} collisions at √s = 1.96 TeV are used to measure cross sections as a function of the angle in the plane transverse to the beam direction between the transverse momentum (p{sub T}) of the [gamma] + leading jet system (jets are ordered in p{sub T}) and p{sub T} of the other jet for [gamma] + 2 jet, or p{sub T} sum of the two other jets for [gamma] + 3 jet events. The results are compared to different models of multiple parton interactions (MPI) in the pythia and sherpa Monte Carlo (MC) generators. The data indicate a contribution from events with double parton (DP) interactions and are well described by predictions provided by the pythia MPI models with p{sub T}-ordered showers and by sherpa with the default MPI model. The [gamma] + 2 jet data are also used to determine the fraction of events with DP interactions as a function of the azimuthal angle and as a function of the second jet p{sub T}.

Book excerpt: Rapidity distributions are presented for events containing either a Z boson or a photon with a single jet in proton-proton collisions produced at the CERN LHC. The data, collected with the CMS detector at \sqrt{s} = 7 TeV, correspond to an integrated luminosity of 5.0 inverse femtobarns. The individual rapidity distributions of the boson and the jet are consistent within 5% with expectations from perturbative QCD. However, QCD predictions for the sum and the difference in rapidities of the two final-state objects show discrepancies with CMS data. In particular, next-to-leading-order QCD calculations, and two common Monte Carlo event generators using different methods to match matrix-element partons with parton showers, appear inconsistent with the data as well as with each other.

This book was released on 2013 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Characteristics of multi-particle production in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV are studied as a function of the charged-particle multiplicity, N[ch]. The produced particles are separated into two classes: those belonging to jets and those belonging to the underlying event. Charged particles are measured with pseudorapidity abs(eta) 2.4 and transverse momentum pt 0.25 GeV. Jets are reconstructed from charged-particles only and required to have pt> 5 GeV. The distributions of jet pt, average pt of charged particles belonging to the underlying event or to jets, jet rates, and jet shapes are presented as functions of N[ch] and compared to the predictions of the PYTHIA and HERWIG event generators. Predictions without multi-parton interactions fail completely to describe the N[ch]-dependence observed in the data. For increasing N[ch], PYTHIA systematically predicts higher jet rates and harder pt spectra than seen in the data, whereas HERWIG shows the opposite trends. At the highest multiplicity, the data-model agreement is worse for most observables, indicating the need for further tuning and/or new model ingredients.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two dijet measurements, one using 35 pb-1 pPb data at [square root]sNN- 5.02 TeV, and another with 166 [mu]b-1 PbPb and 5.3 pb-1 pp data at [square root]sNN = 2.76 TeV collected with CMS detector at the LHC, are presented. In pPb collisions, the dijet PT ratios, azimuthal angle differences and pseudorapidity distributions are measured and compared to PYTHIA and PYTHIA+HIJING simulations as well as NLO QCD predictions for the latter observable. No significant signs of final state interactions, such as a decrease in the mean dijet PT ratios or a broadening in the correlation of the dijets in azimuthal angle, with increasing forward activity, are observed. The dijet pseudorapidity distributions are also measured, and are sensitive to nuclear PDFs for x values of 0.001 - 0.5. Selections on event activity are found to yield unexpected centrality biases on dijet pseudorapidity distributions, which aided the interpretation of similar biases seen in inclusive jet measurements by ATLAS. In PbPb collisions, a detailed scan of charged particle distributions in correlation with the dijet system is carried out. The PT projection of charged particles on the dijet axis is measured at different distances of [delta] = [mathematical formula ...] 2 with respect to the leading and subleading jet axes. In this way, the spectra and angular distribution of the additional particles, which recover the overall event balance in dijet events with enhanced PT asymmetry in PbPb compared to pp collisions, are obtained up to [delta] = 1.8 in steps of 0.2. A significant excess of low PT particles associated with a subleading jet at large [delta] values is observed, and this excess is shown to get larger for dijet events with PT asymmetry. The scan is carried out for variety of anti-kT R parameters, which provides a way of varying jet width and fragmentation. Medium response to jet quenching at wide angles for jets with different fragmentation is studied. Only an insignificant increase of the magnitude of low PT particle excess at large angles, but a significant increase in the modification of the balance distribution close to the jet axes is observed by increasing R.

Hewamanage and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A model-independent signature-based search for physics beyond the Standard Model is performed in the photon + jets + missing transverse energy channel in proton-antiproton collisions at a center of mass energy of 1.96 TeV using the CDF II detector. Events with a photon + jets are predicted by the Standard Model and also by many theoretical models beyond the Standard Model. In the Standard Model, the main mechanisms for photon + jets production include quark-antiquark annihilation and quark-gluon scattering. No intrinsic missing transverse energy is present in any of these Standard Model processes. In this search, photon + [greater-than or equal to] 1 jet and photon + [greater-than or equal to] 2 jet events are analyzed with and without a minimum requirement on the missing transverse energy. Numerous mass distributions and kinematic distributions are studied and no significant excess over the background prediction is found. All results indicate good agreement with expectations of the Standard Model.
