Kirkbys books serves as a detailed and thorough primer on the basics of teaching phonics, supplying teachers with critical definitions, skills, and exercises which are suitable for the classroom. Book Synopsis English Compounds and their Spelling by : Christina Sanchez-Stockhammer
Download or read book English Compounds and their Spelling written by Christina Sanchez-Stockhammer and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-05-03 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anyone writing texts in English is constantly faced with the unavoidable question whether to use open spelling (drinking fountain), hyphenation (far-off) or solid spelling (airport) for individual compounds. While some compounds commonly occur with alternative spellings, others show a very clear bias for one form. This book tests over 60 hypotheses and explores the patterns underlying the spelling of English compounds from a variety of perspectives. Based on a sample of 600 biconstituent compounds with identical spelling in all reference works in which they occur (200 each with open, hyphenated and solid spelling), this empirical study analyses large amounts of data from corpora and dictionaries and concludes that the spelling of English compounds is not chaotic but actually correlates with a large number of statistically significant variables. An easily applicable decision tree is derived from the data and an innovative multi-dimensional prototype model is suggested to account for the results.
Book Synopsis Spelling Morphology by : Dorit Diskin Ravid
Download or read book Spelling Morphology written by Dorit Diskin Ravid and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-08-31 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern Hebrew is a highly synthetic Semitic language—its lexicon is rich in morphemes. This volume supplies the first in-depth psycholinguistic analysis of the interaction between morphological knowledge and spelling in Hebrew. It also examines how far this model can be applied to other languages. Anchored to a connectionist, cognitive, cross-linguistic and typological framework, the study accords with today’s perception of spelling as being much more than a mere technical skill. Contemporary psycholinguistic literature views spelling as a window on what people know about words and their structure. The strong correlation between orthographies and morphological units makes linking consistent grammatical and lexical representation and spelling units in speaker-writers a key research goal. Hebrew’s wealth of morphological structures, reflected in its written form, promotes morphological perception and strategies in those who speak and write it, adding vitality and relevance to this work.
Download or read book Spelling Matters written by R. Kent Smith and published by Archway Publishing. This book was released on 2020-10-20 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In most settings, good spelling is essential for effective communication. What’s more, erratic or unconventional spelling can often leave a poor impression. Though English spelling can be frustrating at times, most people can become above-average or excellent spellers. Spelling Matters provides a comprehensive, flexible guide for improvement in this skill. It first offers a pre-assessment to identify areas needing particular focus. This serves as a compass to point you to a variety of exercises that effectively reinforce the corresponding lessons until mastery has been acquired. This text is appropriate for a broad range of learners—including high school, college, ESL, and adult educational students—and is adaptable to both individual or private and group or classroom use. Though it focuses largely on commonly misspelled words, it also includes challenging ones often required for more advanced writing. Leavened with a touch of humor, this textbook presents an accessible and highly adaptable approach to mastering the rules of English spelling.
