Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A theoretical analysis is presented of the performance of propellers extending to high values of V/nD. At high values of V/nD the analysis shows the propeller efficiency to be critically dependent on the distribution of the load along the radius. A method of calculating the pitch distributions of optimum propellers is explained. Charts are presented that facilitate the selection of the most efficient propellers over a wide range of operating conditions. It is noted that experimental data in the range of high values of V/nD for the purpose of establishing the optimum load distribution are essentially lacking.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Classical aerodynamics is a compulsory study subject for pilots at all levels of experience. Propeller Aerodynamics is a subset of this fascinating subject. Propellers have their unique aerodynamic terminology, forces and handling requirements, knowledge of which all pilots must be aware of to safely handle the aircraft they are flying. Incorrect propeller handling can cause damage to the aircraft and reduce performance efficiency. Most aerodynamic text books only give a brief view of propeller aerodynamics; however this book Propeller Aerodynamics delves more deeply into this subject. The book covers the history and operation of aircraft propellers, prop pitch, thrust, efficiency, aircraft stability, prop forces, constant-speed units and more. This is all essential reading for the pilot progressing to more advanced high-performance aircraft.

Land and published by . This book was released on 1943 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction: The tests described in this report were made on a 1/8-full-size model of a large, long-range, twin-engine flying boat in NACA tank no. 1. The airplane had a wing loading of 43.9 pounds per square foot and a power loading of 11.5 pounds per horsepower. Its arrangement was such that 34.2 percent of the wing area and 56.1 percent of the horizontal tail area were included within the fore-and-aft projection of the propeller disks. The model was fitted with leading-edge slats to make the angle of attack for maximum lift coefficient correspond with that of the airplane at the low Reynolds number associated with the tank tests (3.28 x 105 based on the mean aerodynamic chord and the get-away speed of the model). The model was equipped with two three-blade metal propellers of scale diameter and form, power for which was furnished by two variable-frequency alternating-current motors. Sufficient power was available to develop scale thrust with the propellers. The tests were divided into two parts: (1) aerodynamic tests to determine the effect of the slipstream and thrust from the powered propellers on the lift and trimming-moment characteristics, and (2) hydrodynamic tests to determine the effect of the powered propellers on the range of stable locations of the center of gravity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summary: A short method of estimating propeller efficiency for a given operating condition is described. The efficiency is determined for any design condition by evaluating separately from charts the induced losses and the profile-drag losses. The estimated efficiency is compared with experimental results for a wide range of operating conditions and found to be in agreement near peak efficiency. The present analysis covers single-rotating propellers of two, three, four, six, and eight blades and includes charts showing the rotational-energy loss for the given operating condition in order to assist in estimating the gain in efficiency for dual-rotating propellers. The change in efficiency to be expected from body interference is discussed. Two examples illustrating the use of the method are given in an appendix.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sound-pressure measurements are reported for five shrouded propellers and are compared with those for an unshrouded propeller operating at approximately the same rotational speed and power. The maximum total sound pressure produced by a two-blade shrouded propeller is found to vary approximately from one-half to twice as much as that for an unshrouded two-blade propeller, depending on whether the flow at the shroud surface is unseparated or separated, respectively. Shroud chord is found not to be critical except insofar as the areodynamic considerations are affected. In general, if the shroud-propeller unit satisfies aerodynamic requirements, good sound characteristics will also be obtained.
