Book excerpt: This book treats the phenomena associated with the propagation of short radio waves between terminal points, whether they be the radar antenna serving a dual purpose or the antennas of a communications system. The intention is to present a summary of the state of knowledge in the microwave propagation field at the close of the war. There has been no attempt to produce either a handbook or textbook, but only an interim report on a rapidly changing subject. An attempt has been made to survey all relevant information that was available, from whatever source, and to summarise as much of it as was feasible.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electromagnetic waves are waves which can travel through the vacuum of outer space. Mechanical waves, unlike electromagnetic waves, require the presence of a material medium in order to transport their energy from one location to another. Light, microwaves, xrays, and TV and radio transmissions are all kinds of electromagnetic waves. They are all the same kind of wavy disturbance that repeats itself over a distance called the wavelength. The mechanism of energy transport through a medium involves the absorption and reemission of the wave energy by the atoms of the material. When an electromagnetic wave impinges upon the atoms of a material, the energy of that wave is absorbed. The absorption of energy causes the electrons within the atoms to undergo vibrations. After a short period of vibrational motion, the vibrating electrons create a new electromagnetic wave with the same frequency as the first electromagnetic wave. While these vibrations occur for only a very short time, they delay the motion of the wave through the medium. Once the energy of the electromagnetic wave is reemitted by an atom, it travels through a small region of space between atoms. Once it reaches the next atom, the electromagnetic wave is absorbed, transformed into electron vibrations and then reemitted as an electromagnetic wave. Electromagnetic Waves Propagation in Complex Matter emphasizes the topics of wave propagation and interaction with matters. The book bridges the gap between physics and engineering in these issues.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maxwell's equations have been the basis of electromagnetic theory for a century. They were very successful in providing solutions with sinusoidal time variation, but these solutions are outside the causality law and the conservation law for energy. Signal solutions, which satisfy these two laws, generally do not exist, but can be obtained by adding a term for magnetic dipole currents to Maxwell's equations. Such currents are caused by the rotation of magnetic dipoles, ranging from the hydrogen atom to the magnetic compass needle. Many computer plots of the time variation of electric and magnetic field strengths excited by signals are given in this useful book.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electromagnetic Wave Propagation in Bounded Electron Beams The propagation of sinusoidal electromagnetic waves in charge' free space, guided or unbounded, has been studied in great detail(l). The purpose of this report is to extend the study to the guided propagation of electromagnetic waves in regions containing charged particles, such as an electron beam. Although the equations for charge free space are linear, the equations for electron beams are nonlinear. A Similar study in the case of electron beams is possible only upon linearization of the equations. The linearization is accomplished by decomposing each field quantity into a sum of a time-independent term and of a relatively much smaller sinusoidal term. After substituting this into the original nonlinear equations, it is assumed that terms of higher order such as the product of two sinusoidal terms, may be neglected. The resulting linear equations govern the variation in space of the electric and magnetic fields, and, in addition, the variation of those field quantities which characterize the electron beam, namely, electron current density, velocity, and charge density. We shall study the extensions of the two following problems in charge free Space. First is the uniqueness problem for charge-free Space. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second work of a set of two volumes on the phenomena of wave propagation in nonreacting and reacting media. The first, entitled Wave Propagation in Solids and Fluids (published by Springer-Verlag in 1988), deals with wave phenomena in nonreacting media (solids and fluids). This book is concerned with wave propagation in reacting media-specifically, in electro magnetic materials. Since these volumes were designed to be relatively self contained, we have taken the liberty of adapting some of the pertinent material, especially in the theory of hyperbolic partial differential equations (concerned with electromagnetic wave propagation), variational methods, and Hamilton-Jacobi theory, to the phenomena of electromagnetic waves. The purpose of this volume is similar to that of the first, except that here we are dealing with electromagnetic waves. We attempt to present a clear and systematic account of the mathematical methods of wave phenomena in electromagnetic materials that will be readily accessible to physicists and engineers. The emphasis is on developing the necessary mathematical tech niques, and on showing how these methods of mathematical physics can be effective in unifying the physics of wave propagation in electromagnetic media. Chapter 1 presents the theory of time-varying electromagnetic fields, which involves a discussion of Faraday's laws, Maxwell's equations, and their appli cations to electromagnetic wave propagation under a variety of conditions.
