This book aims to present an account of the theory of wave propagation in elastic solids. The material is arranged to present an exposition of the basic concepts of mechanical wave propagation within a one-dimensional setting and a discussion of formal aspects of elastodynamic theory in three dimensions, followed by chapters expounding on typical wave propagation phenomena, such as radiation, reflection, refraction, propagation in waveguides, and diffraction. The treatment necessarily involves considerable mathematical analysis. The pertinent mathematical techniques are, however, discussed at some length.

This book discusses the one-dimensional motion of an elastic continuum; linearized theory of elasticity; elastodynamic theory; and elastic waves in an unbounded medium. The plane harmonic waves in elastic half-spaces; harmonic waves in waveguides; and forced motions of a half-space are also elaborated. This text likewise covers the transient waves in layers and rods; diffraction of waves by a slit; and thermal and viscoelastic effects, and effects of anisotropy and nonlinearity. Other topics include the summary of equations in rectangular coordinates, time-harmonic plane waves, approximate theories for rods, and transient in-plane motion of a layer. This publication is a good source for students and researchers conducting work on the wave propagation in elastic solids.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis considers the propagation of flexural waves through structures embedded in thin, elastic plates. In a similar manner to photonic and phononic crystals, two-dimensional structures in thin elastic plates are known as platonic crystals (PlaCs) and can be formed using scatterers of any shape arranged in any regular periodic geometry. The time-harmonic waves that propagate through these structures are governed by the fourth-order biharmonic plate equation, in contrast to the second-order Helmholtz equation which governs wave propagation through other crystals and media, such as deep water. Here we consider two-dimensional structures which are comprised of circular scatterers, pins, and arbitrary shapes arranged in a square array. In addition to these two-dimensional PlaCs, we consider wave scattering by other platonic structures, such as one-dimensional arrays, finite clusters and single bodies. For circular and pinned geometries the solution can be obtained analytically using multipole methods, but for arbitrary shapes this is not possible. Here we outline a solution method for an arbitrarily shaped smooth scatterer using boundary integral equations, which arise from an appropriate decomposition of the biharmonic operator. The resulting system of equations can then solved by implementing boundary conditions at the body edge and using boundary element methods (BEMs). To verify the BEM solutions we use the multipole solutions for circular geometries, which are outlined here. For a two-dimensional array of arbitrarily shaped bodies one can construct the scattering and transfer matrices corresponding to a one-dimensional array, and then search for admissible Bloch factors. This permits the construction of band surfaces which reveal when Bloch-Floquet waves can propagate through the array to infinity. We also demonstrate that PlaCs can steer and disperse flexural waves analogously to light in photonic crystals and elastic waves in phononic crystals, and we validate this directly using localised Gaussian beams for pinned clusters. For such pinned structures the solution can be obtained directly using the fundamental solution to the biharmonic plate equation, and using these compact incident waves we are able to confirm the existence of a number of interesting diffraction effects, including negative refraction in thin plates. We also demonstrate that strong energy localisation is possible within the defects and waveguides of pinned PlaCs, and show a number of analogues to well known optical phenomena such as platonic polarisers in two-dimensional arrays of arbitrarily shaped scatterers. A solution is also presented for a single arbitrary body and for one-dimensional arrays of arbitrary geometry.

Waves are transmitted through the Earth to detect oil and gas deposits and to study the Earth?s geological structure. Properties of materials are determined by measuring the behaviour of waves transmitted through them. In recent years, elastic waves transmitted through the human body have been used for medical diagnosis and therapy. Many students and professionals in various branches of engineering encounter problems requiring an understanding of elastic waves. In this book, they will find the basic concepts and methods of the theory of wave propagation in elastic materials. One-dimensional waves, transient waves and harmonic waves including reflections of plane waves at interfaces. Rayleigh waves, waves in elastic layers and in layered materials are discussed. Analytical methods in nonlinear wave propagation are presented. This book includes exercises with solutions and many explanatory figures.

Book excerpt: This revised and updated edition expands on its explanations of methods used to analyze waves in solid materials, such as the waves created by earthquakes and the ultrasonic waves used to detect flaws in materials and for medical diagnoses. In addition to the traditional methods used to analyze steady-state and transient waves in elastic materials, the book contains introductions to advanced areas that no other single text covers. These topics include the use of finite elements to solve wave problems, the Cagniard-de Hoop method, the four-pole technique for analyzing waves in layered media, and the growth and decay of shock and acceleration waves. The authors explain the theory of linear elasticity through the displacement equations of motion, methods used to analyze steady-state and transient waves in layered media, and include an appendix on functions of a complex variable. Originally developed for a graduate course for which no suitable text existed, the new edition retains its classroom-tested treatment of the theories of linear elasticity and complex variables for students needing background in those subjects.

Book excerpt: In this monograph I record those parts of the theory of transverse isotropic elastic wave propagation which lend themselves to an exact treatment, within the framework of linear theory. Emphasis is placed on transient wave motion problems in two- and three-dimensional unbounded and semibounded solids for which explicit results can be obtained, without resort to approximate methods of integration. The mathematical techniques used, many of which appear here in book form for the first time, will be of interest to applied mathematicians, engeneers and scientists whose specialty includes crystal acoustics, crystal optics, magnetogasdynamics, dislocation theory, seismology and fibre wound composites. My interest in the subject of anisotropic wave motion had its origin in the study of small deformations superposed on large deformations of elastic solids. By varying the initial stretch in a homogeneously deformed solid, it is possible to synthesize aniso tropic materials whose elastic parameters vary continuously. The range of the parameter variation is limited by stability considerations in the case of small deformations super posed on large deformation problems and (what is essentially the same thing) by the of hyperbolicity (solids whose parameters allow wave motion) for anisotropic notion solids. The full implication of hyperbolicity for anisotropic elastic solids has never been previously examined, and even now the constraints which it imposes on the elasticity constants have only been examined for the class of transversely isotropic (hexagonal crystals) materials.
