Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Various factors that can affect thermal blooming in stagnation zones are examined, including stagnation-zone motion, longitudinal air motion in the neighborhood of the stagnation zone, and the effects of scenario noncoplanarity. Of these effects, only the last offers any reasonable hope of reducing the strong thermal blooming that normally accompanies stagnation zones; in particular, noncoplanarity should benefit multipulse more than cw beams. The methods of treating nonhorizontal winds hydrodynamically for cw and multipulse steady-state sources are discussed. Pulse ''self-blooming'' in the triangular pulse approximation is discussed in the context of both single and multipulse propagation. It is shown that self-blooming and multipulse blooming cannot be treated independently.

Book excerpt: The method of moments is used to define and derive expressions for laser beam deflection and beam radius broadening for high-energy propagation through the Earth s atmosphere. These expressions are augmented with the integral invariants of the corresponding nonlinear parabolic equation that describes the electric field of high-energy laser beam to propagation to yield universal equations for the aforementioned quantities; the beam deflection is a linear function of the propagation distance whereas the beam broadening is a quadratic function of distance. The coefficients of these expressions are then derived from a thin screen approximation solution of the nonlinear parabolic equation to give corresponding analytical expressions for a target located outside the Earth s atmospheric layer. These equations, which are graphically presented for a host of propagation scenarios, as well as the thin screen model, are easily amenable to the phase expansions of the wave front for the specification and design of adaptive optics algorithms to correct for the inherent phase aberrations. This work finds application in, for example, the analysis of beamed energy propulsion for space-based vehicles. Manning, Robert M. Download or read book Propagation of High-Energy Laser Beam in the Atmosphere written by Charles B. Hogge and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Atmospheric turbulence can affect the propagation of laser beams of any power. Thermal blooming, a nonlinear propagation process, can seriously degrade high-energy beams. These two processes are reviewed in detail, with emphasis on parametric effects such as aperture size wavelength, and focal distance. Included in the discussion are such new topics as supersonic slewing and stagnation zone problems. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We report the results of our theoretical study on the key physical processes that affect the propagation of nigh energy lasers in the atmosphere. The main objective of this study is to discuss the optimum laser wavelength and power for efficient propagation in maritime, desert, rural and urban atmospheric environments. The theoretical/numerical model used in this study includes the effects of aerosol and molecular scattering, aerosol heating and vaporization, thermal blooming due to aerosol and molecular absorption, atmospheric turbulence, and beam quality. These processes are modeled in a fully three-dimensional and time-dependent manner. It is found that aerosol particles are particularly important because they result in laser scattering, absorption and enhanced thermal blooming. In the water vapor transmission windows, the total absorption coefficient driving thermal blooming can be caused mainly by aerosols and not water vapor. In certain maritime environments the deleterious effects of aerosols can be reduced by vaporization. Aerosol particles which cannot be vaporized, such as those Consisting of dust, soot, etc., can significantly increase thermal blooming. The optimum wavelength and power for propagation are found for each atmospheric environment.
