This book was released on 2016-09-15 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mastering the American Accent is an easy-to-follow approach for reducing the accent of non-native speakers of English. Well-sequenced lessons in the book correspond over eight hours of audio files covering the entire text. The audio program provides clear models (both male and female) to help coach a standard American accent. The program is designed to help users speak Standard American English with clarity, confidence, and accuracy. The many exercises in the book concentrate on topics such as vowel sounds, problematic consonants such as V, W, TH, the American R and T and others. Correct lip and tongue positions for all sounds are discussed in detail. Beyond the production of sounds, the program provides detailed instruction in prosodic elements such as syllable stress, emphasis, intonation, linking words for smoother speech flow, common word contractions, and much more. Additional topics that often confuse ESL students are also discussed and explained. They include distinguishing between casual and formal speech, homophones (e.g., they're and there), recognizing words with silent letters (e.g., comb, receipt), and avoiding embarrassing pronunciation mistakes, such as mixing up "pull" and "pool." Students are familiarized with many irregular English spelling rules and exceptions, and are shown how such irregularities can contribute to pronunciation errors. A native language guide references problematic accent issues for 13 different language backgrounds. This book was released on 2013-07-21 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For a closer look go to: talk-or-walk.com Here is your co-teacher for pronunciation. We made the book, you make the copies. This book is for ESL students, from middle school to adult. Virtually all non-native speakers have trouble with certain sounds of English, primarily because they do not have those sounds in their native language. The three major problem areas are: light-right-white-night; beet-bat-bet-bit; and bat-pat-fat-vat. WHAT IS IT? 16 Battleship-type, communicative pair activities for the 16 most common ESL textbook topics. Thus, you can have a pronunciation focus with whatever unit or topic you are covering. These COORDINATE WORDS (usually about 20) feature the most difficult sounds for ESL students to distinguish and pronounce, such as: light-right; ship-sheep; pat-fat, pool-pull, gin-chin. The ANSWER WORDS (usually about 22) are vocabulary from the ESL topic, for example, FOOD: appetizer, bland, brunch, buffet, crispy, dessert, leftovers, sweet tooth, vegetarian. The similar sounding coordinate words create confusion. Clearing up that confusion improves both listening and pronouncing. It's also fun, challenging, related to the topic, and contains topic vocabulary. This book can be used every week for systematic improvement, or as a supplemental activity when time allows or when your textbook is particularly lacking.
