Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses how closer regional connectivity and economic integration between South Asia and Southeast Asia can benefit both regions. With a focus on the role played by infrastructure and public policies in facilitating this process, it provides a detailed and up-to-date discussion of issues, innovations, and progress. Country studies of national connectivity issues and policies cover Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Thailand, examining major developments in trade and investment, economic cooperation, the role of economic corridors, and regional cooperation initiatives. Thematic chapters explore investment in land and sea transport infrastructure, trade facilitation, infrastructure investment financing, supporting national and regional policies, and model-based estimates of the benefits of integration. They also identify significant opportunities for strengthening these integration efforts as a result of the recent opening up of Myanmar in political, economic, and financial terms. For the first time for these regions, the book employs a state-of-the-art computable general equilibrium (CGE) model incorporating heterogeneous firms to estimate the advantages of integration. Providing perspective on the latest thinking on integration policy, Connecting Asiais an essential resource for academics, policymakers, and business people alike. Contributors: A. Bayley, T. Download or read book Mega-City Region Development in China written by Anthony G.O. Yeh and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-11-22 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book sheds light on the mega-city region development in China as a new form of urbanization which plays a crucial role in the economic development of the country. It examines the challenges faced by the mega-city regions and opens up avenues for debates and further research. Economic reform of 1978 has led to an unprecedented growth in the population and economic development of China. A large portion of this increased urban population and the corresponding economic growth has been concentrated in the mega-city regions, such as Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH), Yangtze River Delta (YRD) and Pearl River Delta (PRD). These three mega-city regions have less land but more people and thus higher economy, resulting in various issues and challenges faced by these regions. These challenges pertain to the socio-economic development, transport, environment, governance and development strategy, which this book explores through case studies of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei and Wuhan. This book also explains and analyses the economy, migration processes, transport development, environmental conditions and governance of the mega-city regions of China. With an overview of China’s rapid urbanisation and the consequent economic growth, this book provides an essential understanding of related issues in order to establish appropriate strategies and policies to sustain the process of mega-city region development.

Book Synopsis The Secret Israeli-Palestinian Negotiations in Oslo by : Sven Behrendt
Download or read book The Secret Israeli-Palestinian Negotiations in Oslo written by Sven Behrendt and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2007-03-06 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oslo secret negotiations from 1992 to 1993 were some of the most astonishing and also successful negotiations in the Middle East, leading to the mutual recognition between the PLO and Israel. Through an in-depth examination of the Oslo negotiations, this book argues that at the core of the negotiations was a fascinating dilemma of recognition. Overcoming this dilemma was at the centre of the secret negotiations. A thorough analysis documents how decision makers tried to communicate without being able to engage in face-to-face negotiations, and highlights the significance of the role of third parties in the conflict resolution process, stressing in particular the importance of the European Union’s power in bringing the sides together. This is a comprehensive account of the Oslo negotiations, focusing particularly on the timely issue of non-recognition – which is of great importance today given the recent emergence of the rise of Hamas as the dominant Palestinian political force.

Book Synopsis Enhancing Regional Governance and Multilateral Cooperation in Maghreb by : Andrea Ranelletti
Download or read book Enhancing Regional Governance and Multilateral Cooperation in Maghreb written by Andrea Ranelletti and published by Edizioni Nuova Cultura. This book was released on 2018-09-28 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Frequently neglected in the field of “comparative regionalist studies”, Maghrebi regionalism represents a complex phenomenon, which could provide interesting information concerning the “intersection of the international and domestic factors that shape the economic fortunes, security interests, and cultural activities of political actors” (Katzenstein 1996, 5).
Book Synopsis Cities and Sustainability by : S. Mahendra Dev
Download or read book Cities and Sustainability written by S. Mahendra Dev and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-05-11 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book addresses the sustainability of cities in the context of sustainability science and its application to the city boundary. In doing so it investigates all the components of a city on the basis of sustainability criteria. To achieve sustainability it is essential to adopt an integrated strategy that reflects all sectors within the city boundary and also address the four key normative concepts: the right to develop for all sections, social inclusion, convergence in living standards and shared responsibility and opportunities among sectors and sections. In this book, the individual chapters examine the nodes of sustainability of a city and thus essentially present a large canvas wherein all sustainability-relevant issues are interwoven. This integrative approach is at the heart of the book and offers an extensive, innovative framework for future research on cities and sustainability alike. The book also includes selected case studies that add to the reading and comprehension value of the concepts presented, ensuring a blend of theory and practical case studies to help readers better comprehend the principle of sustainability and its application.
Book Synopsis Rebalancing for Sustainable Growth by : Masahiro Kawai
Download or read book Rebalancing for Sustainable Growth written by Masahiro Kawai and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-04-30 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Asian model of export-led growth served it well in the post-war period, but prolonged sluggish growth of the developed economies following the global financial crisis, together with growing inequality and rising environmental problems, point to the need for a new growth model. The purpose of this book is to describe the challenges facing Asian economies in the post-global financial crisis environment and to identify structural issues and policies that can help guide Asian policymakers to expand the growth potential of domestic and regional demand in coming years, and thereby create a basis for balanced, sustainable, and inclusive long-term growth. These issues and policies span a variety of dimensions, including macroeconomic policy (monetary, fiscal, and foreign currency management), real sector issues (trade and industrial structure), infrastructure development, labor market and social policy, financial sector reform and regulation, and regional cooperation and architecture. Key recommendations to achieve these goals include measures to: deepen social protection to support social resilience; increase infrastructure investment to create a “seamless Asia”; enhance productivity in the services sector; establish a region-wide free trade agreement to encourage intraregional trade in goods and services and investment through economies of scale and dynamic efficiency of a larger market; promote a shift to a low-carbon society and support green growth; and deepen and integrate financial markets to facilitate the recycling of Asia’s high savings for investment within the region.

Book excerpt: After centuries-long neglect, land transportation corridors connecting Asia and Europe are on the brink of a re-awakening. From a level of practically zero, a revived network of these land corridors is likely to garner a considerable share of the freight revenues emanating from increasing trade between Asia and Europe. Therefore, there is competition among major players for control in shaping of the Asia-Europe railway transportation corridors. However, possibilities for cooperation exist as well. In this book, transportation corridors joining Asia and Europe are examined and evaluated at a general level. Moreover, the Baku-Tblisi-Kars railway project is assessed from the perspectives of the 3 countries involved: Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey. Further, it has been proved that the road will strengthen regionalism and will increase the prospects for the three host countries to become a part of the corridors that are being developed globally. Besides, Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway road will play a key role in helping to revive the Silk Road connection shaping common vision and facilitating in transforming the region. The BTK transport corridor will be able to stimulate the development of non-oil economy reviving the non-oil trade and economic activities in the region restoring the historical position of the region as a commercial hub along the ancient silk ways. By 2025, this region is expected to become prosperous financial sector for which comprehensive strategy is being formulated by the regional countries for sustainable growth.
