Book Synopsis Aging in the Past by : David I. Kertzer
Download or read book Aging in the Past written by David I. Kertzer and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1995-01-01 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thanks to improved food, medicine, and living conditions, the average age of the population is increasing throughout the modern industrialized world. Yet, despite the recent upsurge of scholarly interest in the lives of older people and the blossoming of historical demography, little historical demographic attention has been paid to the lives of the elderly. A landmark volume, Aging in the Past marks the emergence of the historical demographic study of aging. Following a masterly explication of the new field by Peter Laslett, leading scholars in family history and historical demography offer new research results and fresh analyses that greatly increase our understanding of aging, historically and across cultures. Focusing primarily on post-Industrial Europe and the United States, they explore a range of issues under the broad topics of living arrangements, widowhood, and retirement and mortality. This important work provides a much-needed historical perspective on and suggests possible alternative solutions to the problems of the aged. Book Synopsis Social Security for the Excluded Majority by : Wouter van Ginneken
Download or read book Social Security for the Excluded Majority written by Wouter van Ginneken and published by International Labour Organization. This book was released on 1999 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The large majority of workers in developing countries are excluded from social security protection. Social Security for the Excluded Majority examines this problem in Benin, China, El Salvador, India, and the United Republic of Tanzania. This book pleads for a participatory approach to the extension of social security and explores ways in which governments and organizations can come together to create practical, workable policies to bring social security protection to all.Through a series of detailed case studies compiled by an international array of policy experts, this book looks closely at the workings of self-financed schemes for informal workers that emerged in the 1990s, and highlights the schemes that have been most beneficial. It focuses on how NGOs, cooperatives, and other social organizations have been able to develop institutions and policies more in line with the requirements and contributory capacity of the informal sector. The authors evaluate various approaches to the extension of formal sector social insurance to informal sector workers, including the self-employed. In addition, they explore how social assistance programs, although often requiring sophisticated administration, can help ensure that benefits reach the population most in need, such as children, the disabled, and the elderly.

Book Synopsis The Story of the Rockefeller Foundation by : Raymond B. Fosdick
Download or read book The Story of the Rockefeller Foundation written by Raymond B. Fosdick and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-29 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its original publication in 1952, Fosdick's book has been the single most reliable treatment of one of the most important philanthropies in the United States and indeed the world. Fosdick served as president of the foundation for twelve years, from 1936 to 1948, when it was the largest grant-making endow-ment in the world. As Steven Wheatley notes in his valuable new introduction, in part The Story of the Rockefeller Foundation was intended as an instrument of institutional self-defense. When it was written, the foundation community was under mounting political attack from the right, and the book was meant to help balance the Scales by cataloging the foundation's good works. As a deliberate self-portrait, the book conceals as much as it reveals, while in the process it reveals a good deal about the author. Fosdick sees politics, like bureaucracy, as perhaps an avoidable problem and not an inevitable consequence of foundation activity. He sees foundations as engaging in the application of scientific, tech-nical, and organizational solutions to public problems through a ""venture cap-ital"" approach to discovering how to resolve them. Fosdick's ""higher ground"" approach became established philanthropic practice far beyond the Rockefeller Foundation. Consequently, this volume is significant as an institutional history as well as a charter for American foundations.
