Book Synopsis Taming Wild Extensions: Hopf Algebras and Local Galois Module Theory by : Lindsay Childs
Download or read book Taming Wild Extensions: Hopf Algebras and Local Galois Module Theory written by Lindsay Childs and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2000 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book studies Hopf algebras over valuation rings of local fields and their application to the theory of wildly ramified extensions of local fields. The results, not previously published in book form, show that Hopf algebras play a natural role in local Galois module theory. Included in this work are expositions of short exact sequences of Hopf algebras; Hopf Galois structures on separable field extensions; a generalization of Noether's theorem on the Galois module structure of tamely ramified extensions of local fields to wild extensions acted on by Hopf algebras; connections between tameness and being Galois for algebras acted on by a Hopf algebra; constructions by Larson and Greither of Hopf orders over valuation rings; ramification criteria of Byott and Greither for the associated order of the valuation ring of an extension of local fields to be Hopf order; the Galois module structure of wildly ramified cyclic extensions of local fields of degree p and p2; and Kummer theory of formal groups. Beyond a general background in graduate-level algebra, some chapters assume an acquaintance with some algebraic number theory. From there, this exposition serves as an excellent resource and motivation for further work in the field.

Book Synopsis Tensor Categories by : Pavel Etingof

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is there a vector space whose dimension is the golden ratio? Of course not—the golden ratio is not an integer! But this can happen for generalizations of vector spaces—objects of a tensor category. The theory of tensor categories is a relatively new field of mathematics that generalizes the theory of group representations. It has deep connections with many other fields, including representation theory, Hopf algebras, operator algebras, low-dimensional topology (in particular, knot theory), homotopy theory, quantum mechanics and field theory, quantum computation, theory of motives, etc. This book gives a systematic introduction to this theory and a review of its applications. While giving a detailed overview of general tensor categories, it focuses especially on the theory of finite tensor categories and fusion categories (in particular, braided and modular ones), and discusses the main results about them with proofs. In particular, it shows how the main properties of finite-dimensional Hopf algebras may be derived from the theory of tensor categories. Many important results are presented as a sequence of exercises, which makes the book valuable for students and suitable for graduate courses. Many applications, connections to other areas, additional results, and references are discussed at the end of each chapter.
Book Synopsis Homotopy Invariant Algebraic Structures by : Jean-Pierre Meyer
Download or read book Homotopy Invariant Algebraic Structures written by Jean-Pierre Meyer and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1999 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents the proceedings of the conference held in honor of J. Michael Boardman's 60th birthday. It brings into print his classic work on conditionally convergent spectral sequences. Over the past 30 years, it has become evident that some of the deepest questions in algebra are best understood against the background of homotopy theory. Boardman and Vogt's theory of homotopy-theoretic algebraic structures and the theory of spectra, for example, were two benchmark breakthroughs underlying the development of algebraic $K$-theory and the recent advances in the theory of motives. The volume begins with short notes by Mac Lane, May, Stasheff, and others on the early and recent history of the subject. But the bulk of the volume consists of research papers on topics that have been strongly influenced by Boardman's work. Articles give readers a vivid sense of the current state of the theory of "homotopy-invariant algebraic structures". Also included are two major foundational papers by Goerss and Strickland on applications of methods of algebra (i.e., Dieudonné modules and formal schemes) to problems of topology. Boardman is known for the depth and wit of his ideas. This volume is intended to reflect and to celebrate those fine characteristics.
Book Synopsis Complex Multiplication and Lifting Problems by : Ching-Li Chai
Download or read book Complex Multiplication and Lifting Problems written by Ching-Li Chai and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2013-12-19 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abelian varieties with complex multiplication lie at the origins of class field theory, and they play a central role in the contemporary theory of Shimura varieties. They are special in characteristic 0 and ubiquitous over finite fields. This book explores the relationship between such abelian varieties over finite fields and over arithmetically interesting fields of characteristic 0 via the study of several natural CM lifting problems which had previously been solved only in special cases. In addition to giving complete solutions to such questions, the authors provide numerous examples to illustrate the general theory and present a detailed treatment of many fundamental results and concepts in the arithmetic of abelian varieties, such as the Main Theorem of Complex Multiplication and its generalizations, the finer aspects of Tate's work on abelian varieties over finite fields, and deformation theory. This book provides an ideal illustration of how modern techniques in arithmetic geometry (such as descent theory, crystalline methods, and group schemes) can be fruitfully combined with class field theory to answer concrete questions about abelian varieties. It will be a useful reference for researchers and advanced graduate students at the interface of number theory and algebraic geometry.
Book Synopsis New Directions in Hopf Algebras by : Susan Montgomery
Download or read book New Directions in Hopf Algebras written by Susan Montgomery and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-05-06 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hopf algebras have important connections to quantum theory, Lie algebras, knot and braid theory, operator algebras and other areas of physics and mathematics. They have been intensely studied in the past; in particular, the solution of a number of conjectures of Kaplansky from the 1970s has led to progress on the classification of semisimple Hopf algebras and on the structure of pointed Hopf algebras. Among the topics covered are results toward the classification of finite-dimensional Hopf algebras (semisimple and non-semisimple), as well as what is known about the extension theory of Hopf algebras. Some papers consider Hopf versions of classical topics, such as the Brauer group, while others are closer to work in quantum groups. The book also explores the connections and applications of Hopf algebras to other fields.
Book Synopsis Brauer Groups, Hopf Algebras and Galois Theory by : Stefaan Caenepeel
Download or read book Brauer Groups, Hopf Algebras and Galois Theory written by Stefaan Caenepeel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2002-03-31 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is devoted to the Brauer group of a commutative ring and related invariants. Part I presents a new self-contained exposition of the Brauer group of a commutative ring. Included is a systematic development of the theory of Grothendieck topologies and étale cohomology, and discussion of topics such as Gabber's theorem and the theory of Taylor's big Brauer group of algebras without a unit. Part II presents a systematic development of the Galois theory of Hopf algebras with special emphasis on the group of Galois objects of a cocommutative Hopf algebra. The development of the theory is carried out in such a way that the connection to the theory of the Brauer group in Part I is made clear. Recent developments are considered and examples are included. The Brauer-Long group of a Hopf algebra over a commutative ring is discussed in Part III. This provides a link between the first two parts of the volume and is the first time this topic has been discussed in a monograph. Audience: Researchers whose work involves group theory. The first two parts, in particular, can be recommended for supplementary, graduate course use.

Download or read book Algebraic Groups written by J. S. Milne and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-09-21 with total page 665 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Algebraic groups play much the same role for algebraists as Lie groups play for analysts. This book is the first comprehensive introduction to the theory of algebraic group schemes over fields that includes the structure theory of semisimple algebraic groups, and is written in the language of modern algebraic geometry. The first eight chapters study general algebraic group schemes over a field and culminate in a proof of the Barsotti–Chevalley theorem, realizing every algebraic group as an extension of an abelian variety by an affine group. After a review of the Tannakian philosophy, the author provides short accounts of Lie algebras and finite group schemes. The later chapters treat reductive algebraic groups over arbitrary fields, including the Borel–Chevalley structure theory. Solvable algebraic groups are studied in detail. Prerequisites have also been kept to a minimum so that the book is accessible to non-specialists in algebraic geometry.
