Book Synopsis Projections of Power by : Robert M. Entman
Download or read book Projections of Power written by Robert M. Entman and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2009-11-15 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To succeed in foreign policy, U.S. presidents have to sell their versions or framings of political events to the news media and to the public. But since the end of the Cold War, journalists have increasingly resisted presidential views, even offering their own spin on events. What, then, determines whether the media will accept or reject the White House perspective? And what consequences does this new media environment have for policymaking and public opinion? To answer these questions, Robert M. Entman develops a powerful new model of how media framing works—a model that allows him to explain why the media cheered American victories over small-time dictators in Grenada and Panama but barely noticed the success of far more difficult missions in Haiti and Kosovo. Discussing the practical implications of his model, Entman also suggests ways to more effectively encourage the exchange of ideas between the government and the media and between the media and the public. His book will be an essential guide for political scientists, students of the media, and anyone interested in the increasingly influential role of the media in foreign policy.

Download or read book Projections of Power in the Americas written by Niels Bjerre-Poulsen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a fascinating contribution to the study of politics and social relations in the Americas, as well as to the study of power. The nine essays describe different ways in which power is being exerted and projected in the Americas - by governments, by special interests, and by transnational criminal organizations. However, they also tell stories of collective and individual empowerment of citizens in the Americas.
Book Synopsis The Power of Projections by : Arthur Jay Klinghoffer
Download or read book The Power of Projections written by Arthur Jay Klinghoffer and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2006-04-30 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why is Europe at the top half of maps and Africa at the bottom? Although we are accustomed to that convention, it is, in fact, a politically motivated, almost entirely subjective way of depicting a ball spinning in space. As The Power of Projections teaches us, maps do not portray reality, only interpretations of it. To begin with, they are two-dimensional projections of a three-dimensional, spherical Earth. Add to that the fact that every map is made for a purpose and its design tends to reflect that purpose. Finally, a map is often a psychological projection of the historical, political, and cultural values of the cartographer—or of the nation, person or organization for which the map was created. In this fascinating book, Klinghoffer examines the world perceptions of various civilizations and the ways in which maps have been formulated to serve the agendas of cartographers and their patrons. He analyzes the recent decline of sovereignty, the spread of globalization, the reassertion of ethnic identity, and how these trends affect contemporary mapmaking.

Book Synopsis Projections of Power in the Americas by : Helene Balslev Clausen
Download or read book Projections of Power in the Americas written by Helene Balslev Clausen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-08-06 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two phenomena are of central interest in the nine contributions that make up this volume: one is the question of power and its multiple forms, and the other is that geographical, political and cultural multifaceted unity we call the ‘the Americas’. The book is a multidisciplinary effort, written by scholars from the fields of history, political science, anthropology, sociology and cultural studies, who all share an interest in the ways in which power is projected in the Americas. Some contributors focus on the sources of power, while others are more concerned with how it is presented and legitimized by those who hold it. Likewise, some investigate the relations between government and citizens, while others look at more informal structures of power. Common to all contributions, however, is that they attempt to trace the forms that political and social power take in different American contexts – from the highest echelons of political power in Washington, D.C. to the local politics of a small village in Mexico. Common to all contributions is a nuanced exploration of the various manifestations of political and social power in the Americas.
Book Synopsis Power Projection by : Mark Alan Gunzinger
Download or read book Power Projection written by Mark Alan Gunzinger and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 1993 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study concludes airpower will play an increasingly dominant role in future US contingency responses. Power projection is defined as the finite application of military power by national command authority to achieve discrete political ends outside the borders of the United States, its territories, and possessions. Power projection contingencies are characterized as wars and operations short of war, but not conflicts that are global or total in nature. Future contingencies that demand a US response may occur without warning, be time sensitive, and require short duration deployments. US forces may not have immediate access to or a previously established presence in potential theaters of operation. Due to the changing nature of the international environment and domestic priorities, the President defined a new National Secunty Strategy that emphasizes projecting military forces in response to regional conflicts. The military services are currently modifying their doctrine and force structures to reflect the shift towards power projection. The services agree power projection forces must be lethal, flexible, deployable, mobile, and capable of surviving an increasingly hostile threat environment. Comparing force characteristics reveals airpower has greater flexibility, deployability, mobility, and is better able to survive future threat environments than surface forces. New domestic imperatives have also forced the services to engage in a healthy competition to preserve their share of a shrinking defense budget. In terms of efficiency, apportioning resources according to an arcane formula that does not reflect force capabilities or the future utility of primary service functions is illogical. Building a strong power projection capability requires a thorough evaluation of the relative efficacy of air, land, and sea power to perform the power projection mission.

Book Synopsis Indian Power Projection by : Shashank Joshi
Download or read book Indian Power Projection written by Shashank Joshi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-14 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: India is growing into one of Asia’s most important military powers. Its defence budget has more than doubled in the past decade, and it imports more arms than anyone else in the world. But India is still seen as a land power focused on long, disputed and militarised borders with Pakistan and China rather than the global military force it was in the first half of the twentieth century under British rule. Is this changing? India is acquiring increasing numbers of key platforms – aircraft carriers, amphibious ships, refuelling tankers and transport aircraft – that are extending its reach to the Indian Ocean littoral and beyond. But most accounts of this build-up have been impressionistic and partial. Indian Power Projection assesses the strength, reach and purposes of India's maturing capabilities. It offers a systematic assessment of India’s ability to conduct long-range airstrikes from land and sea, transport and convey airborne and amphibious forces, and develop the institutional and material enablers that turn platforms into capabilities. It draws extensively on the lessons of modern expeditionary operations, and considers how India’s growing interests might shape where and how it uses these evolving capabilities in the future. This study finds that Indian power projection is in a nascent stage: limited in number, primarily of use against much-weaker adversaries, and deficient in some key supporting capabilities. India’s defence posture will continue to be shaped by local threats, rather than distant interests. Indian leaders remain uncomfortable with talk of military intervention and expeditionary warfare, associating these with colonial and superpower excess. But as the country’s power, interests and capabilities all grow, it is likely that India will once more find itself using military force beyond its land borders.

Book excerpt: Techniques of long term projections were evaluated. Among these the most useful tools were identified and applied. Major forecasts are that Japan and Western Europe will be increasingly dependent on outside energy resource support which may induce political/military dependence, and that mainland China is identified as increasingly expansive in economic development, capable of sustaining industrial growth rates between 15 and 20 percent over the next decades, reaching the level of economic development of the 1970 USSR. Download or read book Multinationals on Trial written by Professor Henry Veltmeyer and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-03-28 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The role and economic power of corporations that dominate the world economy has generated considerable controversy. The most heated debate and the most critical questions surrounding the role of multinational corporations relate to foreign direct investment (FDI). This key volume offers an entirely fresh perspective of the role of multinationals and the development impact of FDI. Contrary to prevailing opinion, it examines whether imperialism is a much more useful concept for describing and explaining the dynamics of world development than globalization. FDI is a mechanism for empire-centred capital accumulation, a powerful lever for political control and for re-ordering the world economy. This is a much needed analysis of global capitalism and its impact around the world, resulting in an excellent resource for students, academics and activists.
