This book was released on 2006-03-14 with total page 660 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the historic launch of the organization by such luminaries as Elihu Root and Charles Evans Hughes, to the recent era when international law is more and more in the public realm, Kirgis’s book traces the evolution of the organization and its relationship to events in the United States and around the world. As he says in the preface: '...In the end, the reader will have to make his/her own judgment about how well the Society has run the course it set out for itself in 1906. I hope this book will provide a basis for that judgment. And of course no judgment at this stage can be final. The American Society of International Law will carry on into its second century with new and continuing programs that take into account what it has done in its first one hundred years. It will continue to do its best to demonstrate not only what international law is or should be, but also that, in the words of former ASIL President Louis Henkin, international law matters.'

Book Synopsis Dispossession without Development by : Michael Levien
Download or read book Dispossession without Development written by Michael Levien and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-03-05 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the mid-2000s, India has been beset by widespread farmer protests against land dispossession. Dispossession Without Development demonstrates that beneath these conflicts lay a profound shift in regimes of dispossession. While the postcolonial Indian state dispossessed land mostly for public-sector industry and infrastructure, since the 1990s state governments have become land brokers for private real estate capital. Using the case of a village in Rajasthan that was dispossessed for a private Special Economic Zone, the book ethnographically illustrates the exclusionary trajectory of capitalism driving dispossession in contemporary India. Taking us into the lives of diverse villagers in "Rajpura," the book meticulously documents the destruction of agricultural livelihoods, the marginalization of rural labor, the spatial uneveness of infrastructure provision, and the dramatic consequences of real estate speculation for social inequality and village politics. Illuminating the structural underpinnings of land struggles in contemporary India, this book will resonate in any place where "land grabs" have fueled conflict in recent years.
Book Synopsis Denominational Higher Education During the Vietnam War by : John J. Laukaitis
Download or read book Denominational Higher Education During the Vietnam War written by John J. Laukaitis and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-05-03 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this follow up to Laukaitis' Denominational Higher Education During World War II (Palgrave 2018), this collection investigates connections between religion, student activism, and higher education to reveal the complexity of public reactions to the controversies around the Vietnam War. Historical treatments of how the Vietnam War generated tensions on campuses across the country remain centered on public universities such as University of California-Berkeley, Kent State, and University of Wisconsin-Madison. Missing from the historical analysis is how the Vietnam War affected the campuses of Christian liberal arts colleges. This work centers on how Christian liberal arts colleges across the landscape of the United States encountered the national crisis in relationship to their Christian tenets and how particular religious communities and student bodies responded to the war.
