Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In June 2014, FAO member-states endorsed the Voluntary Guidelines for Securing Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries (SSF Guidelines). These Guidelines are one of the most significant landmarks for small-scale fisheries around the world. They are comprehensive in terms of topics covered, and progressive, with their foundations based on human rights and other key principles. It can be anticipated that implementing the SSF Guidelines, whether at local, national, or regional levels, will be challenging. This book contains in-depth case studies where authors discuss the extent to which the Guidelines can help improve the realities of small-scale fishing men and women globally and make their livelihoods and communities more secure. This will require policy intervention and innovation, along with contributions of civil society organizations and academia. However, most of all it will necessitate the empowerment of fishing people so that they can become active participants in decision making on matters where their well-being and human rights are at stake. By endorsing the SSF Guidelines, states have committed themselves to support and facilitate this development. This book asks whether states can successfully “walk the talk,” and provides advice as to how they can do so. The collection of case studies sets the platform for an interactive dialogue space for researchers, policy makers, civil society and small-scale fishing communities to start the conversation about the monitoring and evaluation of the implementation of the SSF Guidelines at local, national, regional and global levels. An added value is that it helps add focus to our work as civil society activists involved in ensuring the application of the SSF Guidelines. Naseegh Jaffer – General Secretary, World Forum of Fisher People (WFFP) This collection offers many ways in which institutions enabling small-scale fisheries can protect and promote sustainability, food security, customary tenure, self-management, and market access, while fostering such benefits as ecosystem-based management, protected areas, incorporation of local knowledge, and poverty alleviation. You will want to put this book in the hands of policy-makers and practitioners immediately -- and for years to come. Evelyn Pinkerton – Professor, Simon Fraser University, Canada

Book excerpt: The Working Group on Fisheries for Small Pelagic Fish (WGSP) reviewed the state of knowledge on the main fisheries harvesting small pelagic fish in the Southwest Indian Ocean (SWIO) region, identified the species to be analysed in greater detail by the Working Group and carried out a Productivity-Susceptibility Analysis (PSA) of ten Small Pelagic fish stocks from the region. A total of 38 species of small pelagic fish were identified for future work of the Working Group. Of the ten (10) stocks analysed using the Productivity-Susceptibility Analysis, eight (8) were scored as being at low risk, while two (2) scored as medium risk. The WGSP will continue working by correspondence during the intersessional period, until the second meeting, to be held during the first semestre of 2021.

Book excerpt: This booklet sets out the findings of a research project to define the current status of utilization of small pelagic fish (those fast-growing species usually reaching maturity within a year) in Asia and assesses competing demands on the resource, so that appropriate strategies for future development of the fishery could be determined. The background to the fisheries, the current landings and usage (mainly human consumption and fishmeal) and trade within and outside Asia is detailed. Although exploitation was found to be a complex issue with much variation between countries, conclusions and recommendations are outlined for future research into ways in which low-income groups could continue their involvement in the trade, and how the overall impact of trading policies might affect them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The African Seas include marginal basins of two major oceans, the Atlantic and the Indian, a miniature ocean, the Mediterranean Sea, and an infant ocean, the Red Sea. Understanding the wide spectrum of environmental features and processes of such a varied collection of marine and coastal regions requires that in situ observation systems be integrated and actually guided, by the application of orbital remote sensing techniques. This volume reviews the current potential of Earth Observations to help in the exploration of the marginal seas around Africa, by virtue of both passive and active techniques, working in several spectral ranges – i.e. measuring either reflected visible and near-infrared sunlight, as well as surface emissions in the thermal infrared and microwave spectral regions, or again the surface reflection of transmitted lidar or radar impulses of visible or microwave radiation. The in-depth evaluation of the advantages offered by each technique and spectral region and in particular by the development of advanced multi-technique systems, contributes to the assessment of the abundant natural resources that the Seas of Africa have to offer, of those in dear need of being – sustainably – exploited and of others that should be protected and maintained in their still pristine conditions.

Book excerpt: In 2020, the FAO Office of Evaluation (OED) backstopped the FAO Eritrea Office in the review of the FAO Country Programme. This is the first review of the Eritrea Country Programme and covers the Country Programming Framework (CPF) period from 2017 to 2021.The review assessed FAO’s strategic positioning in Eritrea, the programme results and provided strategic recommendations on how FAO can better realign its programme to evolving needs. The review found that while the Ministry of Agriculture and the Minitry of Marine Resources fully participated in the formulation of the CPF, the Ministry of Land, Water and the Environment’s participation was limited. Overall, the results are unequal across the three priority areas of the CPF. The review makes thirteen recommendations. This includes FAO enhancing its cooperation with the Ministry of Marine Resources and the Ministry of Land, Water and the Environment. More specifically, both ministries should also be involved in the preparation of the next CPF.

Book excerpt: The first comprehensive review of the current and future effects of climate change on the world’s fisheries and aquaculture operations The first book of its kind, Climate Change Impacts on Fisheries and Aquaculture explores the impacts of climate change on global fisheries resources and on marine aquaculture. It also offers expert suggestions on possible adaptations to reduce those impacts. The world's climate is changing more rapidly than scientists had envisioned just a few years ago, and the potential impact of climate change on world food production is quite alarming. Nowhere is the sense of alarm more keenly felt than among those who study the warming of the world's oceans. Evidence of the dire effects of climate change on fisheries and fish farming has now mounted to such an extent that the need for a book such as this has become urgent. A landmark publication devoted exclusively to how climate change is affecting and is likely to affect commercially vital fisheries and aquaculture operations globally, Climate Change Impacts on Fisheries and Aquaculture provides scientists and fishery managers with a summary of and reference point for information on the subject which has been gathered thus far. Covers an array of critical topics and assesses reviews of climate change impacts on fisheries and aquaculture from many countries, including Japan, Mexico, South Africa, Australia, Chile, US, UK, New Zealand, Pacific Islands, India and others Features chapters on the effects of climate change on pelagic species, cod, lobsters, plankton, macroalgae, seagrasses and coral reefs Reviews the spread of diseases, economic and social impacts, marine aquaculture and adaptation in aquaculture under climate change Includes special reports on the Antarctic Ocean, the Caribbean Sea, the Arctic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea Extensive references throughout the book make this volume both a comprehensive text for general study and a reference/guide to further research for fisheries scientists, fisheries managers, aquaculture personnel, climate change specialists, aquatic invertebrate and vertebrate biologists, physiologists, marine biologists, economists, environmentalist biologists and planners.
