Se trata del primer ensayo crítico en castellano sobre la situación de las literaturas castellana, gallega, catalana, francesa e italiana, y también la exposición de su teoría literaria. En la concepción aristocrática del marqués de Santillana, expuesta en el Prohemio a proverbios, la poesía no debe ser un mero pasatiempo, sino algo «útil», de contenidos profundos y trascendentes. Distingue entre poesía sublime, mediocre e ínfima; la primera sólo se expresa en griego y latín. Edición en castellano antiguo.
