Book excerpt: Excerpt from Progress of Art, in the Century The original scheme of this book was to narrate the development of the arts in the nineteenth century, if possible, organically and proportionately. But after this scheme was prepared, and some of the book done, I found it advisable to relinquish an intention that could not be realised adequately without making this volume simply an uninteresting textbook of statistics. It seemed to me wiser to embody much of what might be said sectionally in one long preliminary part - for Art does not grow this way in England or America, or that way in France or Germany or Holland, but is continually and inevitably interrelated. Thus, in treating at great length of the many phases of British Art, since Gainsborough's death and the appearance of Constable and Turner, to the Impressionists of to-day, I have really treated of the phases of modern art in America, in France, in all Europe. To write the history of modern French Art one would have to begin with Constable. All that is greatest in contemporary art derives from this great English master. Book excerpt: Late in the nineteenth century, many Americans were troubled by the theories of Charles Darwin, which contradicted both traditional Christian teachings and the idea of human supremacy over nature, and by an influx of foreign immigrants, who challenged the supremacy of the old Anglo-Saxon elite. In response, many people drew comfort from the theories of philosopher Herbert Spencer, who held that human society inevitably develops towards higher and more spiritual forms. In this illuminating study, Kathleen Pyne explores how Spencer’s theories influenced a generation of American artists. She shows how the painters of the 1880s and 1890s, particularly John La Farge, James McNeill Whistler, Thomas Dewing and the Boston school, and the impressionist painters of the Ten, developed an art dedicated to social refinement and spiritual ideals and to defending the Anglo-Saxon elite of which they were members. This linking of visual culture to the problematic conditions of American life radically reinterprets the most important trends in late nineteenth-century American painting.

Book excerpt: In late nineteenth-century France, when Charles Darwin’s theories of evolution had finally begun to permeate French culture and society, several academic artists turned to a relatively new sub-genre of history painting, the prehistoric-themed subject. This artistic interest in Darwin’s theories was manifested as paintings and sculptures of prehistoric humanity engaged in physical conflict with each other or other animals, struggling for food, or hunting—all nineteenth-century popular understandings of “survival of the fittest.” This book examines how this sub-genre captured the imagination of French Salon painters from the 1880s to early 1900s, in particular that of Fernand Cormon (1845–1924), one of the foremost academic painters during the final quarter of the nineteenth century. A central argument of this book concerns the unique interpretation of prehistoric humanity that Cormon visualized in his paintings. While the vast majority of prehistoric-themed images made by his salon colleagues focused on violence, combat, and sexual conquest, Cormon’s paintings depict a conflict-free humanity, in which collaboration and cooperation dominate, rather than physical struggle. This study probes the French intellectual understanding and appropriation of Darwin’s theories and considers how the French (mis)translation of The Origin of Species by Clémence-Auguste Royer, the first French translator of the text—along with Neo-Lamarckism and republican ideology in Third Republic France—may have collectively shaped Cormon’s representation of early humanity. The art press overwhelmingly favored Cormon’s visualization of the prehistoric world over that of his Salon peers. Through extended analysis of the art criticism concerning Cormon’s work, Shalon Parker argues that critics’ very clear preference for Cormon’s paintings was rooted in their awareness that he utilized the sub-genre of the prehistoric as a forum in which to reimagine and revive academic figurative painting at a time when the critical reception of Salon art had reached its nadir. Additionally, this study provides a broad overview of the visual models, in particular the anthropological and ethnographic texts and imagery, most readily available to Cormon as sources for shaping his vision of the prehistoric world.

Book excerpt: This anthology brings together twenty outstanding works of recent scholarship on the history of the visual arts in the United States from the colonial period to 1945. The selected essays--all written within the past two decades--reflect the interdisciplinary character of current art historiography in America and the variety of approaches that contribute to the dynamism in the field. The authors take up diverse subjects--from colonial portraits to nineteenth-century sculptures of women to photographic images of New York--and invite those with a general knowledge of the history of American art to think more deeply about art and culture. Employing many interpretive methodologies, including iconology, social history, structuralism, psychobiography, and feminist theory, the contributors to this volume combine close analysis of specific art objects or groups of objects with discussion of how these works of art operated within their cultural contexts. The authors consider the works of such artists as John Singleton Copley, Charles Willson Peale, Winslow Homer, Thomas Eakins, Georgia O'Keeffe, and Jackson Pollock as they assess how paintings, sculpture, prints, drawings, and photographs have carried meaning within American society. And they investigate how the conceptualization, production, and presentation of works of art both inform and are informed by prevailing attitudes toward the role of the arts and the artist in American culture.

Book excerpt: The French Popular Lithographic Imagery, 1815-1870 series reproduces in twelve volumes approximately 5000 nineteenth-century lithographs from the collections of the Bibliothèque nationale. Beatrice Farwell's multivolume text-fiche catalog is an essential resource to art historians and will appeal to all those interested in nineteenth-century France. In the final volume, Lithography in Art and Commerce, Farwell discusses how lithography, the revolutionary printing technology of the nineteenth century, came to be devoted more to commerce than to art. Farwell studies the many commercial applications of the versatile lithographic medium, showing how lithography was transformed from artisanal craft to industrial mass production. In exploring the connection between art and commerce, Farwell enriches our understanding of the relations between so-called "high" and "low" art in nineteenth-century France. The fiche accompanying the text features art reproductions, courses of instruction in drawing, examples of different lithographic techniques, and an important section on the development of color lithography.
