Book excerpt: The progress in lattice QCD, especially the capacity to calculate at ever lower quark masses, combined with modern techniques of chiral extrapolation, means that one can now determine the strange quark contribution to the vector form factors of the nucleon with remarkable precision. We review these recent landmark calculations and compare them with the most recent global analysis of the experimental situation using parity violating electron scattering.

Book excerpt: This thesis discusses two key topics: strangeness and charge symmetry violation (CSV) in the nucleon. It also provides a pedagogical introduction to chiral effective field theory tailored to the high-precision era of lattice quantum chromodynamics (QCD). Because the nucleon has zero net strangeness, strange observables give tremendous insight into the nature of the vacuum; they can only arise through quantum fluctuations in which strange–antistrange quark pairs are generated. As a result, the precise values of these quantities within QCD are important in physics arenas as diverse as precision tests of QCD, searches for physics beyond the Standard Model, and the interpretation of dark matter direct-detection experiments. Similarly, the precise knowledge of CSV observables has, with increasing experimental precision, become essential to the interpretation of many searches for physics beyond the Standard Model. In this thesis, the numerical lattice gauge theory approach to QCD is combined with the chiral perturbation theory formalism to determine strange and CSV quantities in a diverse range of observables including the octet baryon masses, sigma terms, electromagnetic form factors, and parton distribution functions. This thesis builds a comprehensive and coherent picture of the current status of understanding of strangeness and charge symmetry violation in the nucleon.

Book excerpt: The G^0 experiment is dedicated to the determination of the strange quark's contribution to the electric and magnetic nucleon form factors, provided by parity-violating asymmetries of cross-sections measured with longitudinaly polarized electrons in elastic electron-proton scattering and quasi-elastic electron-deuteron scattering. Forward angle measurements, which have been performed in Hall C of Jefferson Laboratory, have provided a linear combination of electric and magnetic vector form factors for momentum transfers in the range 0.1 to 1 (GeV/c)^2. Backward angle measurements, which will be performed starting in 2006, will allow the complete separation of the form factors at Q^2 of 0.23 and 0.63 (GeV/c)^2.

Book excerpt: G0 is a parity violating electron scattering program at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility, and its forward angle measurement is reported in this thesis. In this experiment, parity violating asymmetries of elastic electron-proton scattering were measured over a range of four-momentum transfer from 0.12 to 1.0 (GeV/c)2. From the asymmetries, linear combinations of the strange electric and magnetic form factors of the nucleon, G$s\atop{E}$ + [eta]G$s\atop{M}$, are extracted over the same kinematic range. These results, combined with existing data from other experiments, indicate that both G$s\atop{E}$ and [eta]G$s\atop{M}$ are non-zero and dependent on the four-momentum transfer, with imply non-trivial strange quark contributions to the low energy electromagnetic properties of the nucleon.

Book excerpt: We studied the strange contributions to the elastic vector and axial form factors of the nucleon using all available elastic electroweak scattering data. Specifically, we combine elastic nu-p and nubar-p scattering cross-section data from the Brookhaven E734 experiment with elastic ep and quasi-elastic ed and e-4He scattering parity-violating asymmetry data from the SAMPLE, HAPPEx, PVA4 and G0 experiments. We not only determined these form factors at individual values of momentum-transfer (Q2), as other groups have done recently, but also fit the Q2-dependence of these form factors using simple functional forms. I present an overview of the G0 backward-angle experiment as well as the results of these fits using existing data, along with some expectations of how we can improve our knowledge of these form factors if the MicroBooNE collaboration completes their experiment.

Book excerpt: Abstract: The AdS/QCD (Anti-de Sitter/Quantum Chromodynamics) is a mathematical formalism applied to a theory based on the original AdS/CFT (Anti-de Sitter/Conformal Field Theory) correspondence. The aim is to describe properties of the strong force in an essentially non-perturbative way. AdS/QCD theories break the conformal symmetry of the AdS metric (a sacrifice) to arrive at a boundary theory which is QCD-like (a payoff). This correspondence has been used to calculate well-known quantities in nucleon spectra and structure like Regge trajectories, form factors, and many others within an error of less than 20% from experiment. This is impressive considering that ordinary perturbation theory in QCD applied to the strongly interacting domain usually obtains an error of about 30%. In this thesis, the AdS/QCD correspondence method of light-front holography established by Brodsky and de Teramond is used in an attempt to calculate the Dirac and Pauli neutral weak form factors, F[superscript z]1 (Q2) and F[superscript z]2(Q2) respectively, for both the proton and the neutron. With this approach, we were able to determine the neutral weak Dirac form factor for both nucleons and the Pauli form factor for the proton, while the method did not succeed at determining the neutral weak Pauli form factor for the neutron. With these we were also able to extract the proton's strange electric and magnetic form factor, which addresses important questions in nucleon sub-structure that are currently being investigated through experiments at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility.

Book excerpt: The study of N∗s can provide us with critical insights into the nature of QCD in the confinement domain. The keys to progress in this domain are the identification of its important degrees of freedom and the effective forces between them. The nucleon is the simplest system in which the nonabelian character of QCD is manifest. There are Nc quarks in a baryon because there are Nc colors, and as a consequence Gell-Mann and Zweig were forced to introduce the quarks in order to describe the octet and decuplet baryons. This volume gives a status report on the recent experimental and theoretical results in the field of nucleon resonance physics. A wealth of new high precision data was presented from facilities around the world, such as BES, BNL, ELSA, GRAAL, JLab, MAMI, MIT/Bates, SPring8, and Yerevan. Particular emphasis was laid on polarization degrees of freedom and large acceptance detectors as precision tools for studying small but important transition amplitudes, and the helicity (spin) structure of the nucleon. There were new results describing the nucleon resonance structure on the basis of quantum chromodynamics, either directly in terms of quarks and gluons by means of lattice gauge theory, or in terms of hadrons in the framework of chiral field theories. A status report on duality showed the surprising connections between the physics of the low energy nucleon resonance region and the realm of quark structure functions in deep inelastic scattering. Finally, this volume contains a summary report of the BRAG workshop, devoted to the analysis of baryon resonances.

Book excerpt: It is emphasized in the 2015 NSAC Long Range Plan [1] that \understanding the structure of hadrons in terms of QCD's quarks and gluons is one of the central goals of modern nuclear physics." Over the last three decades, lattice QCD has developed into a powerful tool for ab initio calculations of strong-interaction physics. Up until now, it is the only theoretical approach to solving QCD with controlled statistical and systematic errors. Since 1985, we have proposed and carried out rst-principles calculations of nucleon structure and hadron spectroscopy using lattice QCD which entails both algorithmic development and large scale computer simulation. We started out by calculating the nucleon form factors { electromagnetic [2], axial-vector [3], NN [4], and scalar [5] form factors, the quark spin contribution [6] to the proton spin, the strangeness magnetic moment [7], the quark orbital angular momentum [8], the quark momentum fraction [9], and the quark and glue decomposition of the proton momentum and angular momentum [10]. These rst round of calculations were done with Wilson fermions in the `quenched' approximation where the dynamical e ects of the quarks in the sea are not taken into account in the Monte Carlo simulation to generate the background gauge con gurations. Beginning in 2000, we have started implementing the overlap fermion formulation into the spectroscopy and structure calculations [11, 12]. This is mainly because the overlap fermion honors chiral symmetry as in the continuum. It is going to be more and more important to take the symmetry into account as the simulations move closer to the physical point where the u and d quark masses are as light as a few MeV only. We began with lattices which have quark masses in the sea corresponding to a pion mass at 300 MeV and obtained the strange form factors [13], charm and strange quark masses, the charmonium spectrum and the Ds meson decay constant fDs [14], the strangeness and charmness [15], the meson mass decomposition [16] and the strange quark spin from the anomalous Ward identity [17]. Recently, we have started to include multiple lattices with di erent lattice spacings and di erent volumes including large lattices at the physical pion mass point. We are getting quite close to being able to calculate the hadron structure at the physical point and to do the continuum and large volume extrapolations which is our ultimate aim. We have now nished several projects which have included these systematic corrections. They include the leptonic decay width of the [18], the N sigma and strange sigma terms [19], and the strange quark magnetic moment [20]. Over the years, we have also studied hadron spectroscopy with lattice calculations and in phenomenology. These include Roper resonance [21, 22], pentaquark state [23], charmonium spectrum [24, 14], glueballs [25, 26, 27, 28], scalar mesons a0(1450) and (600) [29] and other scalar mesons [30], and the 1+ meson [31]. In addition, we have employed the canonical approach to explore the rst order phase transition and the critical point at nite density and nite temperature [32, 33]. We have also discovered a new parton degree of freedom { the connected sea partons, from the path-integral formulation of the hadronic tensor [34, 35] which explains the experimentally observed Gottfried sum rule violation [34]. Combining experimental result on the strange parton distribution, the CT10 global tting results of the total u and d anti-partons and the lattice result of the ratio of the momentum fraction of the strange vs that of u or d in the disconnected insertion, we have shown that the connected sea partons can be isolated [36]. In this nal technical report, we shall present a few representative highlights that have been achieved in the project.

Book excerpt: Almost 50 years after the proposal of Lee and Young in 1956 to test the hypothesis of parity violation in weak interactions and the subsequent experimental verification of parity violation by C. S. Wu, parity violation has today become a useful property of weak interactions. This is due to the fact that the focus nowadays has changed: parity violation in weak interactions is no more a topic of investigation but is used as a tool in many different fields ranging from nuclear physics to the search for the hidden extra dimensions requested by string theory. For our first workshop which took place June 5-8, 2002, at the Institut fiir Ke- physik of the Johannes Gutenberg-Universitat Mainz, we concentrated on the in vestigation of the strangeness contribution in the nucleon. This book contains the refereed and selected papers of the second workshop "From Parity Violation to Hadron Structure and more (Part II)", which took place June 8-11, in the Labo- toire de Physique Subatomique et de Cosmologie, in Grenoble. These papers appear in EPJAdirect, the electronic-only part of EPJA, and they are accessible without restrictions. They will also appear in printed form and can be ordered through Springer. The excellent presentations show the dramatic and steady progress in the accuracy of measured parity violating asymmetries over the last few years.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an advanced introduction to extended theories of quantum field theory and algebraic topology, including Hamiltonian quantization associated with some geometrical constraints, symplectic embedding and Hamilton-Jacobi quantization and Becci-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) symmetry, as well as de Rham cohomology. It offers a critical overview of the research in this area and unifies the existing literature, employing a consistent notation. Although the results presented apply in principle to all alternative quantization schemes, special emphasis is placed on the BRST quantization for constrained physical systems and its corresponding de Rham cohomology group structure. These were studied by theoretical physicists from the early 1960s and appeared in attempts to quantize rigorously some physical theories such as solitons and other models subject to geometrical constraints. In particular, phenomenological soliton theories such as Skyrmion and chiral bag models have seen a revival following experimental data from the SAMPLE and HAPPEX Collaborations and these are discussed. The book describes how these model predictions were shown to include rigorous treatments of geometrical constraints because these constraints affect the predictions themselves. The application of the BRST symmetry to the de Rham cohomology contributes to a deep understanding of Hilbert space of constrained physical theories. Aimed at graduate-level students in quantum field theory, the book will also serve as a useful reference for those working in the field. An extensive bibliography guides the reader towards the source literature on particular topics.
