Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Results are reported from measurements of present radionuclide concentrations in Columbia River sediments. A description of the rates and mechanisms governing the decrease in radioactivity levels in the river sediments between 1971 and 1976; a characterization of the areal and depth distribution of fine grain, silty sediments in the McNary Reservoir mode by sub-bottom seismic surveying; and analysis of deep piston cores which penetrate the entire thickness of sediment deposits at selected sites in McNary Reservoir to provide radionuclide data for estimating the inventories of radionuclides in the sediment deposits in the McNary Reservoir are included. The results of these studies showed that the short- and intermediate-lived radionuclides have now decayed to insignificant levels, and only a few long-lived radionuclides (i.e., 54Mn, 55Fe, 6°Co, 137Cs, /sup 152 -154/Eu, 238Pu, /sup 239 -240/Pu, and 241Am) at trace concentrations remain buried in the sediment deposits. The surface sediments in the McNary Reservoir contain much lower radionuclide concentrations than deeper sediments because of the build-up of 40 to 80 cm of fresh, relatively uncontaminated new sediment deposits since 1971.

Book Synopsis Studies of Columbia River Water Quality. [Radionuclide and Sediment Transport and Water Temperature]. by :
Download or read book Studies of Columbia River Water Quality. [Radionuclide and Sediment Transport and Water Temperature]. written by and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The program to study the water quality of the Columbia River consists of two separate segments: sediment and radionuclide transport and temperature analysis. Quasi-two dimensional (longitudinal and vertical directions) mathematical simulation models were developed for determining radionuclide inventories, their variations with time, and movements of sediments and individual radionuclides in the freshwater region of the Columbia River below Priest Rapids Dam. These codes are presently being applied to the river reach between Priest Rapids and McNary Dams for the initial sensitivity analysis. In addition, true two-dimensional (longitudinal and lateral directions) models were formulated and are presently being programmed to provide more detailed information on sediment and radionuclide behavior in the river. For the temperature analysis program, river water temperature data supplied by the U.S. Geological Survey for six ERDA-sponsored temperature recording stations have been analyzed and cataloged on storage devices associated with ERDA's CDC 6600 located at Richland, Washington. This book was released on 1990-09-11 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From 1944-1971, the Hanford Reach of the Colombia River in Washington State received quantities of radioisotopes, heat and chemicals from up to 8 plutonium reactors. Subsequently, from 1971-1984 the same part of the river provided cooling water for 3 power-production facilities.Environmental concerns promoted a series of continuing studies to examine various potential adverse effects. No significant impairment of the rivers ecosystem was detected. This book reviews these studies and places them in a historical framework. It provides a unique overview of studies made over a 40-year period which are now scattered through various published and unpublished documents. It should be of interest to all those concerned with aquatic ecology and environmental concerns.
