Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume contains the edited proceedings of the Vth Symposium of the "Gesellschaft fiir Nephrologie" held in Lausanne, Switzerland, from September 21 to September 23, 1967. The manuscripts were arranged according to their contents rather than to their titles. An attempt was made to divide the allotted space between different contributors according to the apparent importance or originality of the contributions. Most of the papers submitted were written in either German or a rather inarticulate English, and subsequently, have been translated into English by the editors and their collaborators. The editors are indebted to Mr. R. Darling, student of medicine of the Faculte de Medicine de l'Universite de Lausanne, for reviewing the English translation. Editing was limited to requirements based on form rather than on content. In a few instances, manuscripts which were inadequate in form were accepted because their contents appeared interesting or important. A very few manuscripts were either not submitted or could not be included in the present proceedings, because they did not satisfy the editorial standards. Some papers are published in the present proceedings in abstract form because they have been submitted elsewhere for full publication. The editors' responsibility does not extend to the factual content of the manuscripts. The editors wish to apologize for the long delay in publishing these proceedings, a delay which may be attributed to difficulties in communication and cooperation with various authors.

Book Synopsis Lipids and the Kidney by : William F. Keane
Download or read book Lipids and the Kidney written by William F. Keane and published by Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past decade, experimental and clinical studies have suggested that dyslipidemia may be an important risk factor for the progression of renal disease. This volume explores in great detail recent advances in our understanding of the pathogenesis and treatment of this common complication of progressive renal injury. In the experimental investigations presented, emphasis is placed on specific disturbances of lipids that are seen in progressive renal disease including the effects of oxidatively modified lipoproteins and Lp(a) on various functions of the glomerular cells. Clinical studies have identified dyslipidemia as a risk factor for progressive renal disease in diabetes mellitus, various non-diabetic renal diseases, and most recently in patients with progressive renal allograft loss. An emerging interest in the genetics of dyslipidemia has recently arisen and this topic as it specifically relates to progressive renal disease is discussed. The final section of the book offers new insights into the mechanisms of action of antilipemic therapy used in the treatment of dyslipidemia. This volume should be read by all nephrologists caring for patients with progressive renal disease and by physicians interested in the biology of lipids, diabetes and essential hypertension.

Book Synopsis Renal Fibrosis: Mechanisms and Therapies by : Bi-Cheng Liu
Download or read book Renal Fibrosis: Mechanisms and Therapies written by Bi-Cheng Liu and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-08-09 with total page 709 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book systemically presents the latest research on renal fibrosis, covering all the major topics in the field, including the possible mechanisms, biomarkers, and strategies for prevention and treatment of chronic kidney disease (CKD). Due to its high prevalence, CKD represents a huge global economic and social burden. Irrespective of the initial causes, CKD progresses to end stage kidney disease (ESKD) due to renal fibrosis, which is characterized by glomerulosclerosis, tubule atrophy and atresia, and the excessive accumulation of extracellular matrix (ECM) in the kidney. Unfortunately, an estimated 1%-2% of the adult population living with CKD will need renal replacement therapy at some point as a result of ESKD. As such, strategies for preventing or slowing CKD progression to ESKD are of utmost importance, and studies aiming to understand the mechanisms of renal fibrosis have been the focus of intensive research. Recently, novel insights into the pathophysiological processes have furthered our understanding of the pathogenesis of renal fibrosis, and more importantly, promoted studies on the early diagnosis and treatment of CKD. This book draws lessons from the extensive, state-of-the-art research in this field, elaborating the new theories and new techniques to offer readers a detailed and comprehensive understanding of renal fibrosis and as well as inspiration for future research directions.

We are grateful to the authors for their outstanding contributions to this fifth volume. Drs. Reuss and Cotton review in Chapter 1 new advances in our understanding of water transport in epithelial tissues responsive to antidiuretic hormone. In Chap ters 2 and 3 Dr. Knox and Dr. Schoolwerth and their associates summarize respec tively new information in the areas of renal hemodynamics and electrolyte excre tion, and renal metabolism. Chapter 4, written by Drs. Laski and Kurtzman, updates recent developments in the regulation of acid-base balance in health and disease. Chapter 5, contributed by Drs. Sutton and Cameron, provides the reader with a detailed account of progress in the area of mineral metabolism. In Chapter 6, Dr. Campese examines the contribution of sodium, calcium, and neurogenic factors in the pathogenesis of essential hypertension. The immunological aspects of renal disease are clearly discussed by Dr. Couser in Chapter 7. New developments in this field are emphasized and should provide the reader with a clear understanding of the direction in which this field is moving. Drs. Humes and Messana (Chapter 8) discuss selected areas in which new developments have occurred in our understand ing of acute renal failure and toxic nephropathy."
