Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume highlights some of the multidisciplinary aspects of automatic signature verification. The first two chapters serve as an introduction. The first constitutes a review of the literature of the past five years. The second addresses the problem of parallel strategies to construct and optimize feature vectors to describe a signature. The remaining six chapters are divided into two sections: research on static systems and research on dynamic systems. The section on off-line systems describes a system, based on cooperative neural networks for the automatic processing of signatures on checks, for background removal as well as a model-based system that segments the signature into elements which are then processed locally and globally to evaluate the similarity between two specimens. The three papers on on-line systems compare three verification methods, based on statistical models of signature features using the same benchmark, describe a step-wise verification method based on the analysis of the signature components and describe the different design phases of an operational system, focusing on the various decisions that have to be made throughout the development of such a prototype. Contents:Automatic Signature Verification: The State of the Art — 1989–1993 (F Leclerc & R Plamondon)An Evaluation of Parallel Strategies for Feature Vector Construction in Automatic Signature Verification Systems (M C Fairhurst and P Brittan)A Static Signature Verification System Based on a Cooperating Neural Networks Architecture (H Cardot et al.)Off-Line Verification of Japanese Signatures After Elimination of Background Patterns (I Yoshimura & M Yoshimura)Structural Interpretation of Handwritten Signature Images (R Sabourin et al.)Statistical Methods for On-Line Signature Verification (W Nelson et al.)Component-Oriented Algorithms for Signature Verification (G Dimauro et al.)The Design of an On-Line Signature Verification System: From Theory to Practice (R Plamondon) Readership: Computer scientists. keywords:Automatic Signature Verification;Feature Vector Construction;Static Signature Verification System;Off-Line Verification;Structural Interpretation;Statistical Methods; Component-Oriented Algorithms;On-Line Signature Verification Sytems

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biometrics-based authentication and identification are emerging as the most reliable method to authenticate and identify individuals. Biometrics requires that the person to be identified be physically present at the point-of-identification and relies on `something which you are or you do' to provide better security, increased efficiency, and improved accuracy. Automated biometrics deals with physiological or behavioral characteristics such as fingerprints, signature, palmprint, iris, hand, voice and face that can be used to authenticate a person's identity or establish an identity from a database. With rapid progress in electronic and Internet commerce, there is also a growing need to authenticate the identity of a person for secure transaction processing. Designing an automated biometrics system to handle large population identification, accuracy and reliability of authentication are challenging tasks. Currently, there are over ten different biometrics systems that are either widely used or under development. Some automated biometrics, such as fingerprint identification and speaker verification, have received considerable attention over the past 25 years, and some issues like face recognition and iris-based authentication have been studied extensively resulting in successful development of biometrics systems in commercial applications. However, very few books are exclusively devoted to such issues of automated biometrics. Automated Biometrics: Technologies and Systems systematically introduces the technologies and systems, and explores how to design the corresponding systems with in-depth discussion. The issues addressed in this book are highly relevant to many fundamental concerns of both researchers and practitioners of automated biometrics in computer and system security.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the age of e-society, handwritten signature processing is an enabling technology in a multitude of fields in the “digital agenda” of many countries, ranging from e-health to e-commerce, from e-government to e-justice, from e-democracy to e-banking, and smart cities. Handwritten signatures are very complex signs; they are the result of an elaborate process that depends on the psychophysical state of the signer and the conditions under which the signature apposition process occurs. Notwithstanding, recent efforts from academies and industries now make possible the integration of signature-based technologies into other standard equipment to form complete solutions that are able to support the security requirements of today's society. Advances in Digital Handwritten Signature Processing primarily provides an update on the most fascinating and valuable researches in the multifaceted field of handwritten signature analysis and processing. The chapters within also introduce and discuss critical aspects and precious opportunities related to the use of this technology, as well as highlight fundamental theoretical and applicative aspects of the field. This book contains papers by well-recognized and active researchers and scientists, as well as by engineers and commercial managers working for large international companies in the field of signature-based systems for a wide range of applications and for the development of e-society. This publication is devoted to both researchers and experts active in the field of biometrics and handwriting forensics, as well as professionals involved in the development of signature-based solutions for advanced applications in medicine, finance, commerce, banking, public and private administrations, etc. Handwritten Signature Processing may also be used as an advanced textbook by graduate students.
