Book excerpt: The present volume, with the exception of the introductory chapter, consists of papers delivered at the workshop entitled "The Impact of Supercomputers on the Next Decade of Computational Fluid Dynamics," The workshop, which took place in Jerusalem, Israel during the week of December 16, 1984, was initiated by the National Science Foundation of the USA (NSF), by the Ministry of Science and Development, Israel (IMSD), and co-sponsored by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the Office of Scientific Research of the U.S. Air Force (AFOSR), Tel Aviv University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The introductory chapter attempts to summarize what transpired at the workshop. The genesis of the workshop was an agreement between NSF and Il1S, signed in the spring of 1983, to conduct a series of bi-national work shops and symposia. This workshop represented the first activity spon sored under the agreement. The undersigned were selected by their respective national bodies to act as co-coordinators and organizers of the workshop. The first question that we faced was to decide upon a topic. In the past few years the field of CFD has mushroomed and consequently there have been many meetings, symposia, workshops, congresses, etc.

Book excerpt: Edited versions of 14 papers from a seminar in Lovell, Massachusetts, October 1989, discuss advances in the application of supercomputing to numerically intensive problems in the simulation of fluid flow, especially as it can be substituted for the expensive testing of physical models in the design of aircraft, space craft, and automobiles. Focuses on solving the Navier-Stokes or the Euler equations for which several high- level algorithms and codes are not being developed that exploit the increasingly sophisticated types of computer architecture, such as parallel and vector processing. Book excerpt: From the preface: Fluid dynamics is an excellent example of how recent advances in computational tools and techniques permit the rapid advance of basic and applied science. The development of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has opened new areas of research and has significantly supplemented information available from experimental measurements. Scientific computing is directly responsible for such recent developments as the secondary instability theory of transition to turbulence, dynamical systems analyses of routes to chaos, ideas on the geometry of turbulence, direct simulations of turbulence, three-dimensional full-aircraft flow analyses, and so on. We believe that CFD has already achieved a status in the tool-kit of fluid mechanicians equal to that of the classical scientific techniques of mathematical analysis and laboratory experiment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past several years, it has become apparent that computing will soon achieve a status within science and engineering to the classical scientific methods of laboratory experiment and theoretical analysis. The foremost tools of state-of-the-art computing applications are supercomputers, which are simply the fastest and biggest computers available at any given time. Supercomputers and supercomputing go hand-in-hand in pacing the development of scientific and engineering applications of computing. Experience has shown that supercomputers improve in speed and capability by roughly a factor 1000 every 20 years. Supercomputers today include the Cray XMP and Cray-2, manufactured by Cray Research, Inc., the Cyber 205, manufactured by Control Data Corporation, the Fujitsu VP, manufactured by Fujitsu, Ltd., the Hitachi SA-810/20, manufactured by Hitachi, Ltd., and the NEC SX, manufactured by NEC, Inc. The fastest of these computers are nearly three orders-of-magnitude faster than the fastest computers available in the mid-1960s, like the Control Data CDC 6600. While the world-wide market for supercomputers today is only about 50 units per year, it is expected to grow rapidly over the next several years to about 200 units per year.

Tezduyar on the occasion of his 60th birthday. The articles it contains were born out of the Advances in Computational Fluid-Structure Interaction and Flow Simulation (AFSI 2014) conference, also dedicated to Prof. Tezduyar and held at Waseda University in Tokyo, Japan on March 19-21, 2014. The contributing authors represent a group of international experts in the field who discuss recent trends and new directions in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and fluid-structure interaction (FSI). Organized into seven distinct parts arranged by thematic topics, the papers included cover basic methods and applications of CFD, flows with moving boundaries and interfaces, phase-field modeling, computer science and high-performance computing (HPC) aspects of flow simulation, mathematical methods, biomedical applications, and FSI. Researchers, practitioners, and advanced graduate students working on CFD, FSI, and related topics will find this collection to be a definitive and valuable resource.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Massive amounts of numeric data are far more comprehensible when converted into graphical form. Hence visualization is becoming an integral part of many areas of research. The idea of visualization is not new, but techniques for visualization are still being developed, and visualization research is just beginning to be recognized as a cornerstone of future computer science. As scientists handle increasingly complex problems with computers, visualization will become an even more essential tool for extracting sense from numbers. This volume is a collection of the best papers selected from those presented at the August 1988 Visualization in Supercomputing Conference in Tokyo, Japan. It is divided into three parts: visualization applications, hardware and performance, and visualization theory. Subjects covered include visualization methods used in computational fluid dynamics research, time-to-solution aspects of visualization, the use of parallel/vector computers with finite element method systems, basic computational performance of two graphics supercomputers, and the applicability of the volume imaging concept in various fields.
