Book Synopsis Overcoming Inequalities in Schools and Learning Communities: Innovative Education for a New Century by : Rocio Garcia-Carrion
Download or read book Overcoming Inequalities in Schools and Learning Communities: Innovative Education for a New Century written by Rocio Garcia-Carrion and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2020-03-24 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Educational inequalities have strongly impacted disadvantaged and underservedpopulations such us indigenous, Roma, migrant children, students with disabilities, and those affected by poverty. A wide array of research has contributed toexplaining the mechanisms and effects of inequalities in the achievement patterns, dropout rates, disengagement in the school experiences of children and youthtraditionally excluded. Research also suggests the negative consequences for childdevelopment – including cognitive, language, and social–emotional functioning – ofpoverty and lack of quality education in the early years. Consequently, the currentunequal access to optimal learning environments for every single child to succeedin education and to have a better life perpetuates the exclusion and neglects theright to education for those minorities. This Research Topic aims at moving beyondcauses and shed light upon effective solutions by providing successful pathways forintegration and inclusion of the learners most heavily affected. Scholars worldwide are looking for successful actions with children, youth, andcommunities of learners historically underserved to overcome educational andsocial exclusion. These transformative approaches go beyond the deficit thinkingand are grounded in theories, empirical evidence, and multidisciplinary interventionsoriented towards achieving social impact, which refers to the extent to which thoseactions have contributed to improve a societal challenge. The international networkof “Schools as Learning Communities” is advancing knowledge on deepening andexpanding the impact of what has been defined as Successful Educational Actions(SEAs); that is, those interventions that improve students’ achievement and socialcohesion and inclusion in many diverse contexts, regardless the socioeconomic, national, and cultural environment of schools. Drawing on the evidence generated by this network of researchers to address the globalchallenge of inequality by studying educational actions oriented towards achievingsocial impact and potentially transferrable to other contexts, this Research Topic aimsat deepening on this approach. In short, our purpose is that the contributions includedin this Research Topic contribute to reduce educational and social inequalities andespecially benefit those populations most in need.

Book Synopsis Semantics, Applications, and Implementation of Program Generation by : Walid Taha
Download or read book Semantics, Applications, and Implementation of Program Generation written by Walid Taha and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-06-30 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume constitutes the proceedings of the second International Workshop on the Semantics, Applications, and Implementation of Program Generation (SAIG 2001)held on 6 September, 2001, in Florence, Italy. SAIG 2001 was held as an ACM SIGPLAN workshop co-located with the International Conference on Principles, Logics, and Implementations of High-level Programming Languages (PLI). As the commercial production of software systems moves toward being a traditional industry, automation will necessarily play a more substantial role in this industry, just as it plays a key role in the production of traditional commodities. SAIG aims at promoting the development and the application of foundational techniques for supporting automatic program generation. A key goal of SAIG is to provide a unique forum for both theoreticians and practitioners to present their results and ideas to an audience from a diverse background. This year we are fortunate to have three in?uential invited speakers: Krzysztof Czarnecki (DaimlerChrysler), Tim Sheard (OGI School of Science and Engineering), and Mitchell Wand (Northeastern University). The proceedings include abstracts of the invited talks, and an invited paper by Tim Sheard. Seven technical papers and two position papers were presented at SAIG 2001.

Book Synopsis AI-ML for Decision and Risk Analysis by : Louis Anthony Cox Jr.
Download or read book AI-ML for Decision and Risk Analysis written by Louis Anthony Cox Jr. and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-07-05 with total page 443 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explains and illustrates recent developments and advances in decision-making and risk analysis. It demonstrates how artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) have not only benefitted from classical decision analysis concepts such as expected utility maximization but have also contributed to making normative decision theory more useful by forcing it to confront realistic complexities. These include skill acquisition, uncertain and time-consuming implementation of intended actions, open-world uncertainties about what might happen next and what consequences actions can have, and learning to cope effectively with uncertain and changing environments. The result is a more robust and implementable technology for AI/ML-assisted decision-making. The book is intended to inform a wide audience in related applied areas and to provide a fun and stimulating resource for students, researchers, and academics in data science and AI-ML, decision analysis, and other closely linked academic fields. It will also appeal to managers, analysts, decision-makers, and policymakers in financial, health and safety, environmental, business, engineering, and security risk management.
