Book Synopsis Religion and Law in Spain by : Javier Martínez-Torrón
Download or read book Religion and Law in Spain written by Javier Martínez-Torrón and published by Kluwer Law International B.V.. This book was released on 2018-04-19 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Derived from the renowned multi-volume International Encyclopaedia of Laws, this convenient resource provides systematic information on how Spain deals with the role religion plays or can play in society, the legal status of religious communities and institutions, and the legal interaction among religion, culture, education, and media. After a general introduction describing the social and historical background, the book goes on to explain the legal framework in which religion is approached. Coverage proceeds from the principle of religious freedom through the rights and contractual obligations of religious communities; international, transnational, and regional law effects; and the legal parameters affecting the influence of religion in politics and public life. Also covered are legal positions on religion in such specific fields as church financing, labour and employment, and matrimonial and family law. A clear and comprehensive overview of relevant legislation and legal doctrine make the book an invaluable reference source and very useful guide. Succinct and practical, this book will prove to be of great value to practitioners in the myriad instances where a law-related religious interest arises in Spain. Academics and researchers will appreciate its value as a thorough but concise treatment of the legal aspects of diversity and multiculturalism in which religion plays such an important part.

Book Synopsis Desire, Market, Religion by : Jung Mo Sung
Download or read book Desire, Market, Religion written by Jung Mo Sung and published by SCM Press. This book was released on 2013-01-26 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jung Mo Sung has pioneered a theological analysis of economics in his previous publications, developing a penetrating ethico-religious critique of the international capitalist systems, whose institutions he likens to altars. Where ancient idolatry had visible altars, the modern altar of the ‘global market god’, is invisible, but still demands human sacrifices in the name of ‘objective’ desires. Here Sung recovers theology’s relevance for a world where the most dangerous idols – those that sacrifice millions of people upon the altar of wealth – have for too long been ignored by theology. Desire, Market, Religion, Sung investigates themes such as the struggle against social exclusion, the relationship between economics and religion in the 21 century, where global brands and global economies reigns supreme, and theology’s role in the struggle against social exclusion and the giving of hope for plenty, when the reality is scarcity.
Book Synopsis From Civil to Political Religion by : Marcela Cristi
Download or read book From Civil to Political Religion written by Marcela Cristi and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prompted by the shattering of the bonds between religion and the political order brought about by the Enlightenment, Jean-Jacques Rousseau devised a “new” religion (civil religion) to be used by the state as a way of enforcing civic unity. Emile Durkheim, by contrast, conceived civil religion to be a spontaneous phenomenon arising from society itself — a non-coercive force expressing the self-identify or self-definition of a people. In 1967, the American sociologist Robert Bellah rediscovered the concept and applied it to American society in its Durkheimian form. Ever since Bellah’s publication, most authors have sought to explain civil religion in terms of an alleged “spontaneous” integrative role for society. They have emphasized the religious and cultural dimension of the concept, but failed to give due consideration to its political-ideological foundations. Thus, the coercive potential of civil religion has received little attention or has been wrongly relegated to Third World countries. Cristi provides a critique of the civil religion thesis, and identifies the most basic deficiencies of literature on this topic. By contrasting Bellah’s Durkheimian conception with Rousseau’s original formulation, the author discloses the dubious conceptual and empirical basis of the former. She demonstrates the need to rethink Bellah’s thesis in the light of a reinterpretation of Rousseau’s and Durkheim’s classical approaches, and substantiates her critique with a brief comparative survey of state-directed civil religions, and with an informative case study of civil religion in Pinochet’s Chile.

Download or read book Religious Education at Schools in Europe written by Martin Rothgangel and published by V&R Unipress. This book was released on 2020-06-08 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At a time when educational issues have increasingly come to determine the social and political discourse and major reforms of the education system are being discussed and implemented, and when migration has become a significant phenomenon, contributing to changes in the religious landscape of the European continent, it is highly appropriate to focus our attention on the concrete situation regarding religious education. This volume contains – again on the basis of thirteen key questions – the countries of Southern Europe (Republic of Cyprus, Greece, Italy, Malta, Portugal, Spain, Andorra, Monaco, and San Marino). Beyond the all-important tasks of taking stock and making international comparisons, the aim of this book, that is the final volume of the series "Religious Education at Schools in Europe", is to create a foundation for further action in the field of education, especially with regard to interfaith expertise.
