Book excerpt: Researchers, practitioners, journalists and politicians increasingly recognise that foster care throughout the world is in a state of crisis. There are more and more children needing care and, as residential alternatives dry up, more of these children are being assigned to foster families. This book reports the major findings of a two-year longitudinal study of 235 such children who entered the foster care system in Southern Australia between 1998 and 1999. As well as examining the changing policy context of children's services, the book documents the psychosocial outcomes for these children, their feedback on their experiences of care, and the views of their social workers and carers. In the process, the book examines some cherished beliefs about foster care policy and sheds new light on them. The research reveals that while most children do quite well in foster care up to the two-year point, there is a worrying amount of placement instability at a time when the concentration of emotionally troubled children in care is increasing throughout the western world. Although, surprisingly, placement instability does not appear to produce psychosocial impairment for a period of up to eight months in care, it has an extreme effect on children who are moved from placement to placement because no carer will tolerate their behaviour. These children are consigned to a life of distribution and emotional upheaval because of the lack of alternative forms of care. Another unexpected finding of the research is that increasing the rate of parental contact achieves little or nothing in relation to the likelihood of family reunification. As child welfare increasingly enters a world of research-based practice, Children in Foster Care provides some much needed hard evidence of how foster care policy and practice can be improved.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the method developed by Dr. Silvia Helena Koller and her students and collaborators to apply Urie Bronfenbrenner’s Bioecological Theory of Human Development to empirical studies with children and adolescents. Although Bronfenbrenner's theory, in different stages of development, has been widely cited by several researchers, surprisingly little has been written about the theory itself, its evolution or about the methods that should be used to test it. This book fills this gap by presenting both an overview of Bronfenbrenner’s theory and a method to apply it to empirical research, the Ecological Engagement method. The book also shows how this method can be applied in practice by bringing together a series of research reports of studies carried out in different regions of Brazil and in Angola that used the Ecological Engagement method to study children and adolescent development in different contexts, such as street situation, sexual exploitation, institutional reception, family reintegration, school and emergency and disasters, among others. Ecological Engagement – Urie Bronfenbrenner’s Method to Study Human Development will be a valuable tool for psychologists and other social scientists interested in child and adolescent development looking for a solid an innovative methodology that allows researchers to directly interact with their research subjects in their own social contexts in order to fully understand their problems and issues. “The methodology of Ecological Engagement, that is explained and richly empirically illustrated in this book, is a singularly significant extension of [Urie Bronfenbrenner’s] bioecological model. Indeed, in my view it is a brilliant empirical instantiation of the PPCT component of the model. (...) Ecological Engagement methodology is the scientific means through which Urie’s legacy can be furthered.” – Excerpt from the Foreword to the International Edition by Dr. Richard M. Lerner, director of the Institute for Applied Research in Youth Development, Tufts University

Book excerpt: This report is based on a study of 190 families, which examined children's well-being in different family settings, especially where there had been parental separation and step-families. The study involved both questionnaires and interviews with children, family members (including siblings and parents) and teachers to determine children's views of changes. It considers a variety of factors including children's health, relationships and the use of both formal support services and informal social support to offer an insight into the effects of changing family circumstances for children, both in the short and long term.

Book excerpt: This book offers an essential guide to surgical approaches to the umbilicus. The navel is the only natural scar in the body, accepted for all human beings all over the world. Its absence or distortions can have negative psychological impacts, as it normally lends beauty and harmony to the otherwise unattractive abdomen. The aesthetic importance of the navel justifies the increasing amount of individuals undergoing abdominoplasty and omphaloplasty. However, these surgeries may lead to a series of complications or unintended aesthetic outcomes. Indeed, the postsurgical final aspect of the umbilicus is the main stigma and primary source of problems and complaints following abdominoplasty. In this book readers will find a complete surgical guide to the most important surgical approaches and strategies related to the navel, helping them to deliver a high standard of quality and patient-tailored surgical and aesthetic outcomes. Written by a renowned plastic surgeons with more than 20 years of experience, Omphaloplasty - A Surgical Guide of the Umbilicus offers readers an overview of general and innovative surgical techniques for the umbilicus, helping them to make the best choice when performing abdominoplasties.
