Book excerpt: WINNER OF THE 2020 FOREWORD INDIES GOLD AWARD IN EDUCATION WINNER OF THE SILVER IPPY AWARD FOR BEST EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES You want your children to benefit from a great education. But every student is unique. One type of school might be a great fit for your neighbor's child, but it might not work for your son or daughter. Across the country, many parents today have more choices for their children's education than ever before. If you are starting the process of finding your child's first school—or if you want to choose a new learning environment—The School Choice Roadmap is for you. This first-of-its-kind book offers a practical, jargon-free overview of school choice policies, from public school open enrollment to private school scholarships and more. It breaks down the similarities and differences between traditional public schools, public charter schools, public magnet schools, online public schools, private schools, and homeschooling. Most importantly, The School Choice Roadmap offers a seven-step process that will help you harness the power of your own intuition—and your own expertise about your child's uniqueness—to help you find a school that reflects your family's goals, values, and priorities. Filled with sage advice from dozens of other parents who have pursued the school search process, and interviews with school leaders and teachers, The School Choice Roadmap is an optimistic, empowering book that cuts through the confusion in K-12 education—so that you can give your children every opportunity to succeed in school and in life.

Book Synopsis Leaving to Learn: How Out-of-School Learning Increases Student Engagement and Reduces Dropout Rates by : Elliot Washor, Charles Mojkowski
Download or read book Leaving to Learn: How Out-of-School Learning Increases Student Engagement and Reduces Dropout Rates written by Elliot Washor, Charles Mojkowski and published by Urban Fox Studios. This book was released on 2013-10-11 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this provocative book, authors Washor and Mojkowski observe that beneath the worrisome levels of dropouts from our nation’s high school lurks a more insidious problem: student disengagement from school and from deep and productive learning. To keep students in school and engaged as productive learners through to graduation, schools must provide experiences in which all students do some of their learning outside school as a formal part of their programs of study. All students need to leave school—frequently, regularly, and, of course, temporarily—to stay in school and persist in their learning. To accomplish this, schools must combine academic learning with experiential learning, allowing students to bring real-world learning back into the school, where it should be recognized, assessed, and awarded academic credit. Learning outside of school, as a complement to in-school learning, provides opportunities for deep engagement in rigorous learning.

Book Synopsis K-12 Physical Education by : Manitoba. Dept. of Education
Download or read book K-12 Physical Education written by Manitoba. Dept. of Education and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This physical education curriculum guide for kindergarten through twelfth grade has two main components. The first is a program overview that includes information relating to program organization and implementation for early, middle, and senior grades. The second section contains suggested activities and teaching notes for realizing specific program objectives. The overall goals are that students should: (1) develop physical wellbeing; (2) develop desired movement patterns through the neuromuscular system; (3) express ideas, thoughts, and feelings with confidence through physical activity; (4) develop independence in pursuing physical activity throughout life; (5) develop safety and survival practices; and (6) develop positive social interactions through a variety of physical activities. These goals remain constant throughout the entire program, although the objectives which prepare students to reach the goals vary according to stages of maturation and learning. Developmental characteristics, time allotments, lesson plans, activities, class organization, and evaluation methods are outlined for early, middle, and senior grades. Appendixes contain an equipment list, a safety checklist, a sample lesson plan, a discussion of legal liability, and a bibliography. (JD)
