Book excerpt: Although considerable light has been shed on the mechanisms of ocular immunity over the past 20 years, a complete understanding still eludes our grasp. To many ophthalmologists immunology itself is a comparatively new field. This volume will bring the latest findings in immunological research and the resulting new therapy methods to the ophthalmologist in practice. The scope of the topics goes from general principles of immuno-ophthalmology to more specific ones such as immunology of corneal transplantation or immune regulation of uveoretinal inflammation. With its broad scope of contributions, this publication will not only be significant to the ophthalmologist, but also to pediatricians, specialists in internal medicine as well as dermatologists confronted with eye diseases.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aerobiology is the science that studies the biological component of the atmosphere and its effects on living systems and on the environment. This term was used for the first time in 1935, but the attention of scientists to the biological component of the atmosphere goes back to 1769, when the Italian biologist Spallanzani carried out a series of experiments that disproved the concept of spontaneous generation of life and proved the presence of viable microorganisms in the air. Aerobiology has marked characteristics of interdisciplinarity: its application fields range from respiratory diseases to the airborne outbreak of animal and vegetal diseases and to the biodegradation of substances and materials. The latter is the subject of this book. The purpose of aerobiological research applied to the conservation of cultural heritage is to evaluate the risk of alteration by airborne microorganisms of materials forming artefacts of historical, artistic and archaeological interest. Airborne spores and vegetative structures may develop on different substrates and may be a cause of degradation, in relation to the types of materials, the microclimatic situation and the pollution of the conservation environments. The qualitative and quantitative evaluation of the biological component of air, performed by means of targeted analysis campaigns, and of the characteristics of materials and environments, supplies indispensable information for the evaluation of the actual risk and the planning of interventions. This book is divided into four main parts.

Book excerpt: Asthma is a disease which, beginning in the 1980s, increased in the United States and other countries in both its prevalence and mortality. According to reports by the Center for Disease Control, the number of people with asthma increased by 42% in the last decade, with children, ethnic minorities and the urban poor being most at risk. Timely research on the causes and mechanisms behind the dramatic increase of asthma in the United States and other nations-to epidemic proportions-is presented in this volume. Investigators heading up eight research groups in asthma and/or allergy present their most recent findings, funded by the Center for Indoor Air Research. In addition to the work underway and discussions/suggestions on present research problems, ASTHMA: Causes and Mechanisms of an Epidemic Inflammatory Disease provides a chapter on the causes of asthma-and the reasons for its recent spread, so hotly discussed in the current literature. Researchers in the fields of asthma and allergy, health care providers, and others who follow research in either of these two developing areas will benefit from this book. The book is written at the level of one investigator to another.

It is the ideal reference for residents and practitioners preparing for certification and board examinations. The structure, content and pedagogy allow users to retain more knowledge in less time than with traditional methods. Immunology has seen extraordinary developments in both scope and complexity during the last 40 years. World-renowned author, researcher and educator Joseph A. Bellanti, MD, has synthesized the most current research findings with clinical applications through an innovative new approach to teaching. This text and online service presents a unified approach by integrating principles with case studies to teach clinical realities. Each new book purchased includes a password for a two year individual subscription to the online service at www.immunologycenter.org. In the Preface of the book, Dr. Bellanti explains: "What was once a discipline defined in descriptive terms is now becoming better understood at the genomic and molecular levels." Because of this and the rapid development of treatment options, it is critical for students, residents and practitioners to fully understand the clinical implications of immunologic principles and mechanisms.
