Book excerpt: Over the past few decades the research on Al stress in higher plants has progressed dramatically . Al is on of most attractive ions in the field of plant nutrition. Much effort has been made to clarity the mechanism of Al toxicity and tolerance by plant physiologists and agronomists. Moreover, there is a growing demand for the solution of the problems underlying the social and worldly needs. One is the increased recognition of environmental problems, especially acidification of the biosphere. Another is the burst of the human population in the world. Since Al toxicity is one of the major burts of the major problems in acid soil, the attention of many plant physiologists and agronomists has been focused to Al stress. Our final goal will be improvement of crop production in acid soil which comprises approximately 30% of the soil in the world. Massive amounts of data on Al stress have accumulated during the past few decades, but we are still far from the complete solution. Therefone, this is a good opportunity for the research workers on Al stress to meet together and discuss the accumulated data and then identify the future problems which require our immediate attention.
