Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reports to the Board of Directors of the Mutual Benefit Life Insurance Company, 1901 Gentlemen: By Resolution of the Board, of the thirty-first of January last, the Mathematician was given leave of absence for a visit to England, and was requested to examine, on behalf of the Company, into the subject of Life Insurance there, the condition and experience of the Companies, and collect such information and materials and purchase such books on life insurance for the Company as he might be able. In pursuance of such permission and request, I sailed from New York on the seventh of April, and returned - after some detention by an accident on the voyage - on the twenty-sixth of July - too late by a few days to be present in that month at the meeting of the Board. By the invitation of the President, I am happy to avail myself of the earliest opportunity now afforded, to say something of my trip, and particularly of the matters mentioned in the resolution. Soon after getting to London, I became acquainted with several leading Actuaries, and began the collection of information and materials for future study of life insurance, as practiced by the numerous Companies of Great Britain. Book excerpt: Shortlisted for the Business Book of the Year (International Books category) 2022 Every year, companies spend billions of dollars in board time and headhunter fees on CEO searches. In fact, the selection of the next CEO is the single most important task of the board of directors. Yet, despite the huge amount of time, money, and attention given to the task, many CEO changes fail, with disastrous consequences for all concerned. With so much at stake, it is natural to ask what companies and their boards can do to increase the odds of success. Illustrated with an abundance of real-life examples from interviews with CEOs, C-suite members, members of the boards, and headhunters supporting CEO searches, The Next CEO explains how boards can improve the odds of success with CEO succession by identifying clear CEO mandates and associated CEO profiles and by selecting CEOs that are fi t for purpose. It further explains how the CEOs of leading corporations effectively take charge and create results, providing a roadmap for incoming CEOs. These ideas are brought to life with case studies and interviews with well-known corporations such as ABB, Alibaba, Freudenberg, GE, Google, HNA, HP, Microsoft, Nestle, Nike, Nokia, Novartis, Roche, Sony, Tata, and Zurich Insurance. The book is invaluable practical reading for board members of medium-to-large-size fi rms involved with CEO succession, and for those preparing for their fi rst CEO position. It is also relevant to headhunters who are involved in the process of CEO succession as a working tool for them and their clients. In addition, the book will be relevant to courses on corporate governance and strategic transformation at the executive and MBA levels.

Book excerpt: Based on a groundbreaking study, analysing data on 200 management practices gathered over a 10 year period. Reveals the effectiveness of the 4+2 practices (4 primary and 2 of 4 possible secondary) practices that really matter –– the ones that, if followed rigorously, ensure sustained business success. With a new introduction by the authors. With hundreds of well–known management practices and prescriptions promoted by consultants and available to business, which are really effective and contribute to the growth and continued success of a company? Which do little or nothing? Based on the "Evergreen Project," a massive, 5 year study involving the business school faculties of ten universities, the authors set out to find the management practices that truly promote long–term growth and success. Their findings will revolutionize the art and practice of business management. The book shows that there are essentially six management practices that all successful companies must master simultaneously. They range from focusing on a strategy of growth to maintaining the depth and quality of human talent in the organization.
