Book excerpt: More than 1,200 sawmills produce the bulk of U.S. and Canadian softwood lumber. The maps and tables in this report show the location and size of these mills by State and Province. Analysis of timber inventories in relation to use shows a close correspondence between pricing and use intensity. In some Southern States, the intensity of use is approaching recent growth levels, but the adoption of more intensive management coupled with maturing of large areas of newly established forests should increase supply over the next two decades.

Each peer-reviewed profile identifies and reviews the key literature that describes a substance's toxicological properties. This public health statement tells you about pyrethrins and pyrethroids and the effects of exposure. Pyrethrum is a naturally occurring mixture of chemicals found in certain chrysanthemum flowers. Pyrethrum was first recognized as having insecticidal properties around 1800 in Asiaand was used to kill ticks and various insects such as fleas and mosquitos.

Book excerpt: The Long Term Pavement Performance (LTPP) program has been collecting profile and International Roughness Index (IRI) information from more than 2,062 test sections since 1989 using K.J. Law 690DNC optical sensor Profilometers. Analysis of the IRI data has been limited, but with the increasing distribution of the LTPP DataPave software, this data is seeing increasing use. In an effort to confirm the quality of LTPP IRI data in the Information Management System (IMS) database and to document its variability, LTPP initiated an analysis of IRI variability in September 1997. This report documents the results of that study.

Book excerpt: Processes and Foundations for Virtual Organizations contains selected articles from PRO-VE'03, the Fourth Working Conference on Virtual Enterprises, which was sponsored by the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) and held in Lugano, Switzerland in October 2003. This fourth edition includes a rich set of papers revealing the progress and achievements in the main current focus areas: -VO breeding environments; -Formation of collaborative networked organizations; -Ontologies and knowledge management; -Process models and interoperability; -Infrastructures; -Multi-agent approaches. In spite of many valid contributions in these areas, many research challenges remain. This is clearly stated in a number of papers suggesting a new research agenda and strategic research roadmaps for advanced virtual organizations. With the selected papers included in this book, PRO-VE pursues its double mission as a forum for presentation and discussion of achievements as well as a place to discuss and suggest new directions and research strategies.

Book excerpt: The GSM system is undoubtedly the most successful second-generation digital mobile radio system. One of the key factors for this exceptional performance is the constant evolution of the GSM system and its derivatives. GSM: Evolution towards 3rd generation systems addresses new concepts in the GSM system, dealing both with standardized features as well as with theoretically and technologically feasible improvements which contribute to evolutionary changes in general. Ongoing efforts in GSM standardization are focused on Phase 2+ with gradual additions for a fast and modular evolution. Speech remains the prime service of cellular systems, with ongoing work on spectral efficiency taking into account the tradeoff between cost of the system and transmission quality. Most of the notable results from novel speech service implementations are addressed herein such as new EFR speech codec and Advanced Speech Cell Items (ASCI). Data capability in Phase 2+ has been covered under General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) and High-Speed Circuit Switched Data (HCSD) work items. Initiatives under CAMEL cover intelligent networking (IN) within the GSM framework. Dual mode operation in GSM includes not only dual-band solutions but also inter-networking with other systems like DECT or satellite systems. Numerous specific wireless applications such as inbuilding communications, WLL, etc., have also been developed based on GSM. To support the required changes a number of issues have to be solved in the radio part of the system. Deployment of adaptive antenna arrays for enhanced quality, interference suppression techniques and slow frequency hopping are among the techniques presented in the GSM framework. Dynamic evolution of GSM presents a platform for the introduction of UMTS. Presently, efforts are directed towards the standardization of the UMTS air interface in ETSI. Major trends in progress towards new radio interfaces are outlined including contributions from pan-European projects such as ATDMA, which was carried out under the RACE II framework, and the ACTS project AC090 FRAMES. GSM: Evolution towards 3rd generation systems comprises a collection of specially written contributions from GSM specialists. The information presented is essential reading for all researchers, engineers and managers working on GSM and third generation wireless systems. This book covers the most important advances in GSM that will have lasting impact on the system influencing third generation wireless systems.

Book excerpt: "Drawing on rich historical research filtered through cultural geography, Shortridge looks at the 118 communities that ever achieved a population of 2,500 and unravels the many factors that influenced the growth of urban Kansas. He tells how mercantilism dominated urban thinking in territorial days until after statehood, when cities competed for the capital, prisons, universities, and other institutions. He also shows how geography and size were employed by entrepreneurs and government officials to prepare strategies for economic development. And he describes how the railroads especially promoted the founding of cities in the nineteenth century - and how this system has fared since 1950 in the face of globalization and the growth of interstate highways."--BOOK JACKET.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most scholars do not consider the long-term nature of caregiving, but rather focus on a specific developmental period (e.g., old age) or a specific disability (e.g., cancer). Yet the most important lessons about caregiving may occur at any age, regardless of disabilities or other limitations. Caregiving is a lifelong process. It begins in a mother’s womb, continues throughout the lifespan, and ends after death. Caregiving Across the Lifespan emphasizes caregiving as a process that occurs throughout one’s life. It discusses infant care, the developmental needs of children and adolescents, the many caregiving issues in adulthood and mid-life, and finally end-of-life care and bereavement. Key coverage includes: Examining caregiving issues across a developmental perspective. Caregiving from infancy through early childhood through end of life. Mid-life and multigenerational bonds and responsibilities. Caregiver identity in older adults. Family caregiving at the end of life. This must-have volume offers a wealth of insights and ideas for researchers, practitioners, and graduate students across the caregiving fields, including psychology, social work, public health, geriatrics and gerontology, and medicine as well as public and education policy makers.
