Book Synopsis Ableism in Academia by : Nicole Brown
Download or read book Ableism in Academia written by Nicole Brown and published by UCL Press. This book was released on 2020-10-05 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rather than embracing difference as a reflection of wider society, academic ecosystems seek to normalise and homogenise ways of working and of being a researcher. As a consequence, ableism in academia is endemic. However, to date no attempt has been made to theorise experiences of ableism in academia. Ableism in Academia provides an interdisciplinary outlook on ableism that is currently missing. Through reporting research data and exploring personal experiences, the contributors theorise and conceptualise what it means to be/work outside the stereotypical norm. The volume brings together a range of perspectives, including feminism, post-structuralism, such as Derridean and Foucauldian theory, crip theory and disability theory, and draw on the width and breadth of a number of related disciplines. Contributors use technicism, leadership, social justice theories and theories of embodiment to raise awareness and increase understanding of the marginalised; that is those academics who are not perfect. These theories are placed in the context of neoliberal academia, which is distant from the privileged and romanticised versions that exist in the public and internalised imaginations of academics, and used to interrogate aspects of identity, aspects of how disability is performed, and to argue that ableism is not just a disability issue. This timely collection of chapters will be of interest to researchers in Disability Studies, Higher Education Studies and Sociology, and to those researching the relationship between theory and personal experience across the Social Sciences.

Book excerpt: When he died in 1930 aged 26, Frank Ramsey had already invented one branch of mathematics and two branches of economics, laying the foundations for decision theory and game theory. Keynes deferred to him; he was the only philosopher whom Wittgenstein treated as an equal. Had he lived he might have been recognized as the most brilliant thinker of the century. This amiable shambling bear of a man was an ardent socialist, a believer in free love, and an intimate of the Bloomsbury set. For the first time Cheryl Misak tells the full story of his extraordinary life.

Download or read book In Italics written by Antonio D'Alfonso and published by Guernica Editions. This book was released on 1996 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poet and novelist, Antonio D'Alfonso has been writing essays and giving in-depth interviews for twenty years. This collection contains the most important of these texts which have been reworked into a coherent entity. D'Alfonso discusses the importance of ethnic awareness which he places at the antipodes of territorial nationalism for which ethnicity is too often mistaken. The themes raised in this eclectic book relate to general culture, language, literature, film, and publishing (he founded Guernica Editions in 1978). Though it is the Italian perspective (which the author prefers to call Italic) that is favored, the themes and concepts developed are applicable to other cultures and countries. In Italics is a polemical and unblushing defense for the individual's right to a collective Imaginary, no matter which country one lives in.

Book Synopsis Talent, Competitiveness and Migration by : Transatlantic Council on Migration
Download or read book Talent, Competitiveness and Migration written by Transatlantic Council on Migration and published by Bertelsmann Foundation Publishers. This book was released on 2009 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the global economic crisis ripples across the financial, political and social landscape, it is leaving its mark on international migration. The recession, hailed as the worst since the Great Depression, is impacting the scope and pace of international migration and its effects could deepen should the world economy worsen. Governments, businesses and individuals have all felt the damaging consequences of the global downturn, which has shaken confidence in established institutions. The crisis is driving some policymakers and analysts in Europe and North America to re-think their assumptions about labor migration. Yet while policymakers face exceptionally strong popular and political outcry to protect jobs at home, they face mid-term demographic challenges. These two opposing policy pressures require responses that will not only help ease the current economic crisis, but will also secure the long-term prosperity of these regions. This book reflects the effort of the Transatlantic Council on Migration to map how profound demographic change is likely to affect the size and character of global migration flows; and how governments can shape immigration policy in a world increasingly attuned to the hunt for talent. This volume is the second major product of the Council. The Council was launched in 2008 as a new initiative of the Migration Policy Institute (MPI) in Washington, DC. The Bertelsmann Stiftung and the European Policy Centre are the Council's policy partners.
