Book excerpt: Individuals' attitudes toward seeking psychological help play a major role in determining their actual help-seeking behavior. Among college student populations, research has focused on psychological help-seeking attitudes in an effort to understand the characteristics of college students who do and do not seek psychological treatment. These help-seeking attitudes have been found to be related to a variety of demographic and psychological variables. The present study investigated the extent to which differences in psychological help-seeking attitudes exist as a function of one particular demographic variable, field of study, in a university graduate student sample. Students in the social sciences were found to have significantly more positive help-seeking attitudes than students in both natural science and applied fields. Clinical Psychology students held the most positive attitudes toward seeking psychological help. These results may be of particular interest to college counseling center staff who wish to maximize the likelihood that students in need of psychological services actually seek treatment. Specific implications for counseling centers are discussed.

Book excerpt: Research has shown that although many college students experience depression, most do not seek professional help from available mental health services. The current study uses the Theory of Planned Behavior (Azjen, 1988; 1991) as a model for changing attitudes toward seeking mental health help as well as increasing mental health counseling usage. The Theory of Planned Behavior posits that the best predictor of behavior is one's intention to do that behavior, which is in turn predicted by personal attitudes toward that behavior, what important others think of that behavior, and one's perceived self-efficacy to perform that behavior. For the current study, college students were asked to complete a short online questionnaire that included questions on attitudes and behavior concerning professional mental health services, depression, culture, and demographic information. After a week, participants were randomly assigned to either a control or experimental condition. Participants in the experimental condition watched a short film on going to the counseling center that was based on the Theory of Planned Behavior. Participants in the control condition watched a short film on an unrelated topic. After the film, all participants completed a questionnaire regarding attitudes and behavior concerning professional mental health services and depression. After four weeks, participants were asked to complete a follow-up survey online about attitudes and behavior concerning professional mental health services and depression. Results from the current study do not support the use of the Theory of Planned Behavior as a model for predicting professional mental health service seeking. The intervention was found to be effective in changing attitudes, but was unsuccessful in changing behavior. Implications and suggestions for improving interventions that seek to increase professional mental health services utilization are provided in the discussion.

Book excerpt: The primary care system has been referred to as the de facto system for all types of mental and behavioral health difficulties as there are a significant number of barriers that keep patients from seeking treatment in other settings. As a result, the integrated primary care model has been implemented to meet the psychological needs of patients. With this implementation there is a need for adequately trained psychologists, however there is a limited number of programs that can provide this training. The medical records of 628 patients of an integrated primary care setting were reviewed to determine if seeing a behavioral health consultant (BHC) showed efficacy at decreasing primary care utilization rates and if certain factors influence utilization (such as presenting problem and gender). All BHCs were clinical psychology doctoral students in a practicum in integrated primary care. This study found that patients were likely to begin meeting with a BHC at approximately the same time that their visits with their primary care physician (PCP) increase. Additionally, after meeting with a BHC, the mean number of PCP Graduate Level BHC Outcomes iv visits per month began to decrease as soon as the first month. Other results in this study suggested that the utilization of PCP and BHC services significantly differ by presenting problems, however not by gender. These results suggest that graduate level BHCs are likely able to assist patients with significant change that results in a decrease of utilization of both PCP and BHC services. This makes a case for implementation of more integrated primary care training programs to better meet the current workforce demand.

One recent survey of postsecondary educators found that nearly 80 percent believed emotional wellbeing is a "very" or "extremely" important factor in student success. Studies have found the dropout rates for students with a diagnosed mental health problem range from 43 percent to as high as 86 percent. While dealing with stress is a normal part of life, for some students, stress can adversely affect their physical, emotional, and psychological health, particularly given that adolescence and early adulthood are when most mental illnesses are first manifested. In addition to students who may develop mental health challenges during their time in postsecondary education, many students arrive on campus with a mental health problem or having experienced significant trauma in their lives, which can also negatively affect physical, emotional, and psychological wellbeing. The nation's institutions of higher education are seeing increasing levels of mental illness, substance use and other forms of emotional distress among their students. Some of the problematic trends have been ongoing for decades. Some have been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic and resulting economic consequences. Some are the result of long-festering systemic racism in almost every sphere of American life that are becoming more widely acknowledged throughout society and must, at last, be addressed. Mental Health, Substance Use, and Wellbeing in Higher Education lays out a variety of possible strategies and approaches to meet increasing demand for mental health and substance use services, based on the available evidence on the nature of the issues and what works in various situations. The recommendations of this report will support the delivery of mental health and wellness services by the nation's institutions of higher education.

Therefore, quantifying the attitudes of mental health care professionals in training is critical to assure that they are equitably trained to provide holistic services to individuals with mental illness. Mental health care professionals in-training (students from Social Work, Psychology, Nursing, and Counselor Education); 228 individuals participated in the research. A demographic questionnaire, level of familiarity with mental illness, Community Attitudes toward the Mentally Ill, and General Attitudes toward College Educational Accommodation scales were used to collect data. In addition, the relevant statistical analysis, specifically multiple linear regression and Pearson Product-Moment Correlation, was administered. The data indicated that exposure to mental illness has a significant relationship with all dimensions (Authoritarianism, Benevolence, Social Restrictiveness, Community Mental Health ideology) of attitudes. The data also indicated a significant association between overall attitudes and attitudes toward college educational accommodation. However, demographic variables and exposure to mental illness were not found to be associated with attitudes toward college educational accommodation.

The impact of untreated mental health disorders is pervasive and poses social concerns for all communities. Therefore, there is a need to understand why mental health services are not being utilized. Help-seeking attitudes, stigma, ethnicity, gender, and counseling exposure have been identified as significant deterrents to individuals seeking mental health services. However, there are gaps in the literature related to how these factors impact students on college campuses. Therefore, it was the goal of this study to examine the implications of ethnicity, gender, and counseling exposure on help-seeking attitudes. The results of the study indicated there are no statistically significant differences in ethnicity and help-seeking attitudes. However, there were statistically significant differences in help-seeking attitudes among participants who reported exposure to counseling and no exposure to counseling. Additionally, there were statistically significant differences in gender and help-seeking attitudes, with females being more likely to seek mental health counseling than male university students.
