Section two examines the determinants of productivity growth, including such factors as the natural resource base, industrial structure and intersectoral shifts, capital accumulation, technological change, labour quality, and the macro- and micro-economic environments. Section three synthesizes several of the key debates in the productivity literature, examining the productivity or computer paradox, the relationship between employment and productivity, and the link between productivity and international competitiveness. Section four briefly looks at actions and policies to improve productivity, with particular reference to ways to increase physical investment, develop human capital, and foster technological progress. Appendices include discussion of frameworks for analyzing productivity growth, additional issues in the productivity literature, and statistical and conceptual issues in productivity measurement.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The COVID-19 pandemic struck the global economy after a decade that featured a broad-based slowdown in productivity growth. Global Productivity: Trends, Drivers, and Policies presents the first comprehensive analysis of the evolution and drivers of productivity growth, examines the effects of COVID-19 on productivity, and discusses a wide range of policies needed to rekindle productivity growth. The book also provides a far-reaching data set of multiple measures of productivity for up to 164 advanced economies and emerging market and developing economies, and it introduces a new sectoral database of productivity. The World Bank has created an extraordinary book on productivity, covering a large group of countries and using a wide variety of data sources. There is an emphasis on emerging and developing economies, whereas the prior literature has concentrated on developed economies. The book seeks to understand growth patterns and quantify the role of (among other things) the reallocation of factors, technological change, and the impact of natural disasters, including the COVID-19 pandemic. This book is must-reading for specialists in emerging economies but also provides deep insights for anyone interested in economic growth and productivity. Martin Neil Baily Senior Fellow, The Brookings Institution Former Chair, U.S. President’s Council of Economic Advisers This is an important book at a critical time. As the book notes, global productivity growth had already been slowing prior to the COVID-19 pandemic and collapses with the pandemic. If we want an effective recovery, we have to understand what was driving these long-run trends. The book presents a novel global approach to examining the levels, growth rates, and drivers of productivity growth. For anyone wanting to understand or influence productivity growth, this is an essential read. Nicholas Bloom William D. Eberle Professor of Economics, Stanford University The COVID-19 pandemic hit a global economy that was already struggling with an adverse pre-existing condition—slow productivity growth. This extraordinarily valuable and timely book brings considerable new evidence that shows the broad-based, long-standing nature of the slowdown. It is comprehensive, with an exceptional focus on emerging market and developing economies. Importantly, it shows how severe disasters (of which COVID-19 is just the latest) typically harm productivity. There are no silver bullets, but the book suggests sensible strategies to improve growth prospects. Book excerpt: The issue of productivity growth in Canada has received considerable attention reflecting its marked slowdown since the early 1970s and concerns about its implications for Canadian competitiveness. To better understand productivity developments in Canada, it is useful to decompose total factor productivity (TFP) into investment-specific productivity change (ISP) and technologically neutral productivity change (TNP). The gap in manufacturing productivity growth between Canada and the United States originates mostly in the strong performance of specific industries, such as electrical products and commercial and industrial machinery.

It explores why Canadian industry has performed so poorly over the past 20 years. It compares that performance with those of other industrial and newly industrialized nations. It shows that Canada's situation has been slipping relative to that of its trading partners, and that this jeopardizes future living standards. It describes the feedback between the micro world of management and labour and the macro world of inflation and exchange rates.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chapter TwoLiving standard, productivity and competitiveness to internationalcomparison factorWhy does living standard, productivity and competitiveness to international comparison factor influence Canadians' behavioral consumption change model? What is productivity mean? Productivity measures the efficiency with which production inputs, such as labor and capital are being used in an economy to produce a given level of output. The key determinants of productivity include" the education, training and experience, the workers and the the amount and types of equipment available to them, as well as technological innovation and changes in both organizational and management practices. In this view point, these determinants are influenced by broader factors, such as competition openness market. The term " competitiveness" means as a measure of a country's advantages or disadvantages in selling its products or services in international market. Hence, Canadian's consumption behaviors will be influenced by how it's products are produced as well as its competitiveness with internationals, which are interconnected that contribute to strong Canada's economic growth and rising living standards. For example, in the year, if Canada's productivity effort is raised and export or import number is more than last year, its domestic Canadian who are living to cause who have more jobs to do. Then, they have more effort to consume, due to their living standards are risen in this year, who need to consume anything to satisfy whose better living of standard demand. Another example, I assume that the more efficiently Canadian businesses use resources to produce products and service in this year. That is the more productive, they are the greater their advantage in selling those products and services in international markets, that is the most competition, they will be. Then, Canadian will have more different kinds of products to choose to buy from local manufacturers' products supply. The more product choices influence will bring many Canadian choose to buy local products more than overseas foreign import products. The reasons are possible what local products are cheaper than foreign import products, local products have much different kinds of unique choice, more than foreign similar kinds of products. It will have more local different kinds of product choices will influence. The trend of buying desires to Canadian's consumption is to be changed foreign manufacturing product import who will trend to choose to buy Canadian's domestic manufacturing products in the year. Hence, Canadian's manufacturing more different kind of unique product choice will influence Canadian who desire to buy foreign manufacturing import products to change to desire to buy Canada domestic manufacturing products, due to they can provide more different kinds of products choice to sell to them in this year. Past, they can not buy many of any these Canadian domestic manufacturing products traditionally. Consequently, in the year, raising productivity and raising living standard and raising competitive effort factor will influence Canadians change their behavioral consumption model in this year. When these high technological products can be manufactured more number and sell more in Canada after future ten years. then, these high technological products can sell cheaper price, due to Canada's artificial intelligent manufacturing skill has reach the mature stage. Hence, Canada artificial intelligent scientists can innovate high qualify and low cost material to manufacturing kind of artificial intelligent robots in order to sell more number and reasonable cheap price for this kind of (AI) research and development high technological products after future ten years research and development process.

Book excerpt: This paper assesses the contribution that foreign-controlled plants make to the Canadian manufacturing sector by examining both whether foreign-controlled producers exhibit superior performance and whether their productivity growth spills over to domestic plants. In the first section, the performance of foreign-controlled plants is compared with domestic-controlled plants, using a variety of measures that include value added & gross output per worker, research & development, and technology used. The paper then asks whether foreign-controlled plants differ from those domestic producers that have foreign operations. The third section starts by measuring the contribution of foreign multinational enterprises to labour productivity growth in the Canadian manufacturing sector, then compares the importance of the contribution made by foreign-controlled plants to productivity growth in the 1990s to their contribution in the 1980s. At issue here is whether the relative importance of Canada as a destination for foreign direct investment declined during the 1990s as a result of two free trade agreements. Finally, the paper examines the following: whether productivity growth of domestic producers is higher when the market share of foreign producers is larger; the existence of a subset of domestic plants that benefits more from spillovers originating in foreign-controlled plants; and the presence of two mechanisms that generate spillovers: enhanced competition and the more intense use of advanced technologies by domestic firms.
