Book excerpt: The subject of production of resonances via two photons in ee- colliding beams has finally come into its own. In particular, the eta meson is already changing from this year's sensation to next year's normalization. As for the other old physics mesons with even charge conjugation it seems likely that measurements of the scalar and tensor mesons coupling to two photons are quite doable and will be forthcoming. These will yield some interesting information on the quark content of these states and/or the dynamics of their two photon decays. As for the charmonium states, a measurement of some of the two photon decay widths would be quite interesting in terms of the information it gives on the dynamics of this system. However, even at LEP energies the cross sections for production of any particular state are rather small and one must be lucky to have a detectable decay mode or modes with substantial branching fraction. Finally, there is the .pi.° which started the whole subject. A measurement of this coupling is much easier using the complementary technique for determining two photon widths-the Primakoff effect. GAMMA(.pi.° .-->. .gamma gamma.) has long since been measured with high accuracy in this way.

The analysis is based on samples of proton-proton collision data collected by the CMS experiment at center-of-mass energies of 8 and 13 TeV, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 19.7 and 3.3 inverse femtobarns, respectively. The search focuses on spin-0 and spin-2 resonances with masses between 0.5 and 4 TeV and with widths, relative to the mass, between 1.4E-4 and 5.6E-2. Limits are set on scalar resonances produced through gluon-gluon fusion, and on Randall--Sundrum gravitons. A modest excess of events compatible with a narrow resonance with a mass of about 750 GeV is observed. The local significance of the excess is approximately 3.4 standard deviations. The significance is reduced to 1.6 standard deviations once the effect of searching under multiple signal hypotheses is considered. More data are required to determine the origin of this excess.

The width is separately measured in the three reactions ee/sup /minus// .-->. ee/sup /minus//[eta]°.pi.+.pi./sup /minus//; [eta]° .-->. .gamma gamma., e+e/sup /minus// .-->. e+e/sup /minus//[eta]°.pi.+.pi./sup /minus//; [eta]° .-->. .pi.+.pi./sup /minus//(.pi.°, .gamma.) and e+e/sup /minus// .-->. e+e/sup /minus//[rho]°.gamma., giving a statistically weighted average two-photon width of GAMMA/sub [eta]'.--> gamma gamma./ = 5. 21+-0.28 keV. As a by-product of the measurement of GAMMA/sub /eta/'.--> gamma gamma./ using the decay mode /eta/' .-->. [rho].gamma., we also measured a two-photon decay width for the a2(1320) of GAMMA/sub a 2(1320).--> gamma gamma./ = 1.17+-0. 15+-0.25 keV. 47 refs., 50 figs., 8 tabs.
