Book Synopsis Economics and Technical Change by : Arnold Heertje
Download or read book Economics and Technical Change written by Arnold Heertje and published by London : Weidenfeld & Nicolson. This book was released on 1977 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the Postal Payments System, the former Director General of the Dutch Post Office asked Professor Heertje to write a book on Economics and Technical Development, and this is the English translation of the original Dutch text. This is basically a non-mathematical book on the subject, which deals with the history of economic thought on technical development, the history of technology, production theories and the significance of technical development for economic growth, monopoly power, and economic policy. Informed by the author's knowledge of the original literature, and his proficiency in its five languages, the terminology is exact, the exposition is clear, this text should bridge English-speaking and Continental European thought on this subject.
Book Synopsis The Shape of Production Function and the Direction of Technical Change by : Charles I. Jones
Download or read book The Shape of Production Function and the Direction of Technical Change written by Charles I. Jones and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper views the standard production function in macroeconomics as a reduced form and derives its properties from microfoundations. The shape of this production function is governed by the distribution of ideas. If that distribution is Pareto, then two results obtain: the global production function is Cobb-Douglas, and technical change in the long run is labor-augmenting. Kortum (1997) showed that Pareto distributions are necessary if search-based idea models are to exhibit steady-state growth. Here we show that this same assumption delivers the additional results about the shape of the production function and the direction of technical change.

Book Synopsis Mathematics for economists by : Malcolm Pemberton
Download or read book Mathematics for economists written by Malcolm Pemberton and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2023-11-10 with total page 1118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a self-contained treatment of all the mathematics needed by undergraduate and masters-level students of economics, econometrics and finance. Building up gently from a very low level, the authors provide a clear, systematic coverage of calculus and matrix algebra. The second half of the book gives a thorough account of probability, dynamics and static and dynamic optimisation. The last four chapters are an accessible introduction to the rigorous mathematical analysis used in graduate-level economics. The emphasis throughout is on intuitive argument and problem-solving. All methods are illustrated by examples, exercises and problems selected from central areas of modern economic analysis. The book's careful arrangement in short chapters enables it to be used in a variety of course formats for students with or without prior knowledge of calculus, for reference and for self-study. Book Synopsis New Developments in Productivity Analysis by : Charles R. Hulten
Download or read book New Developments in Productivity Analysis written by Charles R. Hulten and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2007-11-01 with total page 648 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The productivity slowdown of the 1970s and 1980s and the resumption of productivity growth in the 1990s have provoked controversy among policymakers and researchers. Economists have been forced to reexamine fundamental questions of measurement technique. Some researchers argue that econometric approaches to productivity measurement usefully address shortcomings of the dominant index number techniques while others maintain that current productivity statistics underreport damage to the environment. In this book, the contributors propose innovative approaches to these issues. The result is a state-of-the-art exposition of contemporary productivity analysis. Charles R. Hulten is professor of economics at the University of Maryland. He has been a senior research associate at the Urban Institute and is chair of the Conference on Research in Income and Wealth of the National Bureau of Economic Research. Michael Harper is chief of the Division of Productivity Research at the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Edwin R. Dean, formerly associate commissioner for Productivity and Technology at the Bureau of Labor Statistics, is adjunct professor of economics at The George Washington University.
