Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rhizobia are bacteria which inhabit the roots of plants in the pea family and "fix" atmospheric nitrogen for plant growth. They are thus of enormous economic importance internationally and the subject of intense research interest. Handbook for Rhizobia is a monumental book of practical methods for working with these bacteria and their plant hosts. Topics include the general microbiological properties of rhizobia and their identification, their potential as symbionts, methods for inoculating rhizobia onto plants, and molecular genetics methods for Rhizobium in the laboratory. The book will be invaluable to Rhizobium scientists, soil microbiologists, field and laboratory researchers at agricultural research centers, agronomists, and crop scientists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rice based cropping system is the major cropping system practised in India which includes the rotation of crops involving rice, pulses, oil seeds, cotton, sugar cane, green manures etc., The rice based cropping system offers lot of scope for the effective utilization of a wide range of biofertilizers such as Azolla, BGA, Azospirillum, Rhizobium Gluconacetobacter diazotrophicus and other heterotrophic N2 fixing bacteria which help to increase the yield by reducing the cost of cultivation. It thus has dual advantages of being sustainable without endangering the environment and being highly cost effective. This book ‘Biofertilizer Technology for Rice Based Cropping System’ deals with the current developments in the basic and applied aspects of biofertilizers used in the rice based cropping including the novel endophytic diazotrophs viz., Azorhizobium caulinodans, Gluconacetobacter diazotrophicus, Pink Pigmented Facultative Methylotrophs (PPFM) etc. The role of P, Zn and Si solubilizers in the nutrient dynamics of the rice ecosystem has also been covered. The strategies for production and distribution of quality inoculants for rice based cropping system has been given due importance with a focus on the molecular approaches for rapid and reliable quality control of biofertilizers. This book can be considered as a monograph on the usage of biofertilizers in rice based cropping system. It will be very useful for the scientists, researchers, students and extension workers involved in the management of crops in rice based cropping system .

Book excerpt: Reprinted from Plant and Soil, v.174, nos.1-2 (1995), this volume is devoted to discussions on the role of biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) in agricultural sustainability. Papers presented on BNF in crop forage and tree legumes are augmented with discussion of integrated farming systems involving BNF, soil and N management, and recycling of legume residues. BNF by non-legumes is discussed and attempts to transform cereals into nodulating plants are critically reviewed. Also described are advances in the development of new methodologies to understand symbiotic interactions and to assess N-2 fixation in the field; means of enhancing BNF through plant and soil management; breeding and selection; problems encountered in exploiting BNF under farmers' field conditions; and promising approaches to improve BNF exploitation. Lacks a subject index. Annotation copyright by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Book excerpt: Nodules produced on legume roots by root-nodule bacteria provide the major nitrogenous input into natural and agricultural systems worldwide. This book provides an in-depth and up-to-the-minute analysis of what is known about this symbiosis, its origins, the process of nodule formation and development, and the biochemistry and genetics of nodular nitrogen fixation. It also reviews the physiology of the root-nodule bacteria themselves, their ecology in both natural and agricultural systems, and how we can introduce new legumes along with the bacteria they require. This book is recommended for scientists working with root nodule bacteria or host legumes, agronomists, forestry scientists, and soil scientists.

Book excerpt: Chemical fertilizers have had a significant impact on food production in the recent past, and are today an indispensable part of modern agriculture. On the other hand, the oil crisis of the 1970s and the current Middle East problems are constant reminders of the vulnerability of our fossil fuel dependent agriculture. There are vast areas of the developing world where N fertilizers are neither available nor affordable and, in most of these countries, balance of payment problems have resulted in the removal of N fertilizer subsidies. The external costs of environmental degradation and human health far exceed economic concerns. Input efficiency of N fertilizer is one of the lowest and, in turn, contributes substantially to environmental pollution. Nitrate in ground and surface waters and the threat to the stability of the ozone layer from gaseous oxides of nitrogen are major health and environmental concerns. The removal of large quantities of crop produce from the land also depletes soil of its native N reserves. Another concern is the decline in crop yields under continuous use of N fertilizers. These economic, environmental and production considerations dictate that biological alternatives which can augment, and in some cases replace, N fertilizers must be exploited. Long-term sustainability of agricultural systems must rely on the use and effective management of internal resources. The process of biological nitrogen fixation offers and economically attractive and ecologically sound means of reducing external nitrogen input and improving the quality and quantity of internal resources. In this book, we outline sustainability issues that dictate an increased use of biological nitrogen fixation and the constraints on its optimal use in agriculture.
