Book excerpt: Excerpt from Producing Southern Pine Seedlings in Containers Many of the advantages of using container-grown seedlings rather than bare-root stock have been dis cussed by various authors (stein and others 1975, Tinus 1976, Mann 1977, Stein and Owston 1977, Hahn 1982a). Advantages and disadvantages most appropriate for conditions in the southern United States are listed in table 2-1. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Longleaf pine, although widely distributed in the presettlement forests of the southern Coastal Plain, now occupies less than 10 percent of its original range. It is a highly desirable species because it resists tire, insects, and disease and produces excellent quality solid-wood products. Regeneration of the species either by natural methods or by planting of bare-root nursery stock has been difticult, and renewed interest in it has resulted in evaluation of new approaches to seedling establishment. Using container stock has greatly improved the success of longleaf pine establishment. Practical guidelines are presented that will help nursery personnel consistently produce good container stock that will survive well and initiate early height growth.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Preliminary Investigations on Dry, Cold Storage of Southern Pine Seed Early attempts at the Southern Forest Experiment Station to store south ern pine seed made use of a variety of containers, such as sealed glass jars, paper bags, and even sealed wax - paper bags. Some seed lots were disinfected with formaldehyde, other lots were untreated. No record was made of the moisture content of the seed at time of storing, nor was the germination per centage (measure of initial seed quality) always determined for the fresh seed. Temperatures during the storage period were disregarded. A concise, quantita tive summary of experiments during this early period cannot be made, but the nature of the results is readily apparent when the data are grouped loosely by species and by treatment previous to storage. The results were highly erratic and generally unsatisfactory (see table The viability of longleaf seed was usually greatly reduced within a year. For instance, the germination per centage of a longleaf seed lot dropped in 1 year from an initial value of 49 percent to 14 percent when stored, without disinfection, in sealed glass; yet the following season, the germination percentage of a lot under comparable storage conditions with 77 percent initial germination dropped in 1 year to percent. On the other hand, longleaf seed from the 1925 crop, with a ger mination of 75 percent when fresh, when stored in sealed glass after treatment with formaldehyde kept remarkably well for 1 year (germination percent) and moderately well for 2 years more percent and percent germina tion after 2 and 3 years, respectively). Since the longleaf seed were usually dried by air currents from an electric fan after treatment with formaldehyde, it was thought that this thorough drying might have been the factor responsible for the good preservation of these seed lots. This led to measurements of seed moisture content before storage, and in 1935 a cautious surmise was expressed that moisture content was important in the storage of longleaf pine seed. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The longleaf pine ecosystem, once one of the most extensive ecosystems in North America, is now among the most threatened. Over the past few centuries, land clearing, logging, fire suppression, and the encroachment of more aggressive plants have led to an overwhelming decrease in the ecosystem’s size, to approximately 2.2% of its original coverage. Despite this devastation, the range of the longleaf still extends from Virginia to Texas. Through the combined efforts of organizations such as the USDA Forest Service, the Longleaf Alliance, and the Nature Conservancy, extensive programs to conserve, restore, and manage the ecosystem are currently underway. The longleaf pine ecosystem is valued not only for its aesthetic appeal, but also for its outstanding biodiversity, habitat value, and for the quality of the longleaf pine lumber. It has a natural resistance to fire and insects, and supports more than thirty threatened or endangered plant and animal species, including the red-cockaded woodpecker and the gopher tortoise. The Longleaf Pine Ecosystem unites a wealth of current information on the ecology, silviculture, and restoration of this ecosystem. The book also includes a discussion of the significant historical, social, and political aspects of ecosystem management, making it a valuable resource for students, land managers, ecologists, private landowners, government agencies, consultants, and the forest products industry. About the Editors: Dr. Shibu Jose is Associate Professor of Forest Ecology and Dr. Eric J. Jokela is Professor of Silviculture at the School of Forest Resources and Conservation at the University of Florida in Gainesville. Dr. Deborah L. Miller is Associate Professor of Wildlife Ecology in the Department of Wildlife Ecology and Conservation at the University of Florida in Milton.
