Book excerpt: 2 Thessalonians is one of the most enigmatic letters in the New Testament, primarily because of its repeated insistence on its authorship by Paul, coupled with its warnings against forgery of Pauline letters. Modern scholarship has made a number of advances in the study of this letter, but the question of the authorship and purpose remain quite open. Hughes gives a detailed investigation of Graeco-Roman rhetorical traditions and their relationship to letters, and develops a consensus model for the identification of the various conventional parts of rhetorical discourses. He then offers an interpretation of 2 Thessalonians according to these rhetorical traditions. Given the rhetoric thus identified in the letter, an innovative theory is developed against Paul's authorship of 2 Thessalonians. In his final chapters, he suggests ways in which the pseudo-Pauline letters of the New Testament witness to a multiplicity of Pauline theologies after the Apostle's death-a diverse and pluriform 'legacy of Paul'.

Crüsemann subsequently illustrates that 2 Thessalonians, by contrast, revokes the far-reaching social separation from Judaism that characterizes 1 Thessalonians, and thus aims socio-historically at a solidarity with the entire Jewish people. Analysing the concept of the Jews as supposed enemy, the future of the Greek gentile community, and the relationship between the two letters, Crüsemann concludes that the discussion about a "divergence of the ways of Christians and Jews" in early Christian times needs to be realigned.

However, they are rarely taught in most congregations and seminaries today. Admittedly, the genre of these letters (paraenesis) is hard to preach. The primary reason for their neglect, however, is modern criticism’s silencing of them because most scholars think they were not written by Paul and are not aligned with either his gospel or mission. Moreover, they include instructions that are widely received today as out of sync with our modern social worlds. This Proclamation Commentary on these Pauline letters presumes both their apostolic authority as divinely inspired and human-inspiring scripture and their contemporary relevance in encouraging clergy and teachers to reimagine their roles as ministers of the gospel and spiritual leaders for today’s global church.
