Book excerpt: Our program involves development and applications of second-order optical materials which are also multifunctional, i.e., they exhibit more than one functionality and in some cases, new properties derived from a combination of more than one functionality . We specifically focused on applications in electro-optic modulation and photorefracitivity. Our effort has focused on developing electro-optic chromophores which offer extended transparency in the visible (to 633 nm), large r-coefficient, as well as high thermal and temporal stability of electrically poled alignment. Earlier we have developed an electro-optic chromophore, APSS, which was processed using an isocyanate containing liquid polymer to produce a thermally stable electrically poled polyurethane based electro-optic polymer. In order to further improve on optical losses in the visible range (633nm), enhance thermal stability and achieve a better control of the poling process, we have made chemical modifications and synthesized a related chromophore APSAS. This chromophore containing linkable four hydroxy sites, permits the usage of a smaller isocyanate, tolulene diisocyanate, with broader optical transparency, to produce rigid cross-linked polyurethane structures. In addition, we tested waveguide parameters of these chromophores. A waveguide modulator was fabricated using APSS to study processing optimization of this modulator. APSS and APSAS also exhibit multifunctionality: A strong two-photon absorption, photobleaching and up-converted emission. APSS exhibits photobleaching when illuminated with high peak power femtosecond pulse lasers. Utilizing this photobleaching 3D optical data storage was illustrated with a Buggs Bunny cartoon video in which each movie frame was stored in layers 5 microns apart. The two-photon exited photosensitization using APSS was also use for a new approach of two-photon photo.

Book excerpt: Electro-optic chromophores (FTC and CLD) were synthesized in bulk (kilogram) quantities and were distributed to the participants of this program project (Steier, Fetterman, Chen, and TACAN/IPITEK). They were also provided to other Department of Defense programs including to researchers at China Lake (Navy), Redstone Arsenal (Army), and Wright Paterson (Air Force Research Laboratory) and to various industrial programs (e.g., Lockheed Martin) participating in DoD research programs. FTC and CLD chromophores were systematically modified to improve their properties, including for lattice hardening to stabilize electro-optic activity for operation at elevated temperatures and photon flux levels. Over 100 variants of these chromophores were synthesized and were evaluated. Reaction yields were optimized by systematically variation of reaction conditions. New chromophores were also synthesized at the University of Washington including those involving incorporation of significantly improved chromophores. These new materials involve factors of 1.5-2.0 improvement over FTC and CLD chromophores in terms of electro- optic activity at telecommunication wavelengths. They also have proven more amendable to being processed into hardened material lattices and have exhibited significantly improved thermal and photochemical stability. The role of chromophore structure and the use of radical (and singlet oxygen) scavengers have been investigated. The results can be utilized to fabricate materials with significantly improved photochemical stability.

This book was released on 2001 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New opto-electronic and composite materials with enhanced photonic performance were developed and that applicators in 3D optical data-storage, 3D optical-circuitry, 3D micro-fabrications and photorefractivity were studied. Two-photo based technology was used to do photo-crosslinking at a precise volume location to produce complex 3D opticalcircuitry such a waveguide splitters and grating couplers as well as for fabricating MEMS. Another area of our activity bas been in preparation of photonic band gap materials for visible and near-IR range. Highly monodispersed silica and polystyrene spheres of varying diameter(1OO-8OOnm) were prepared and photonic crystals made from them showed photonic pseudogaps. We have successfully infiltrated the pores with a high refractive index conjugated polymer, PPV and etched out the silica spheres. The resulting inverterphotonic crystal exhibits enhanced reflectance at the band gap. Using a new approach of photosensitization with manocrystallites of inorganic semiconductors, we have prepared photorefractive composite for operation at l.31 micrometer and this approach can be extended for preparation of photorefractive materials with a tailored spectral response. Our new materials development in collaboration with Wright lab has made it possible to use two-photon approach to write information in different layers with the capacity of terabits/cm(3), which can flow be read by using a simple CW green laser. A three dimensional digital data-storage system based on two-photon process also was demonstrated. We have written layers of digital data in a dye doped polymer media (AF-240 from Air force Polymer branch doped in PMMA) using highly localized two-photon process. We have demonstrated a new data read back system using a 532nm solid state laser and were able to read the data using confocal single photon fluorescence detection.

Book excerpt: Two-photon absorption spectra have been measured for bis-donor diphenylpolyene derivatives with varying conjugation lengths and end groups. Large two-photon absorptivities are observed via nanosecond nonlinear transmission measurements in comparison to picosecond nonlinear transmission and two-photon excited fluorescence methods, which suggests a large contribution of excited-state absorption to the nanosecond nonlinear transmission results. Chromophores with conformationally locked bridges have been synthesized and the optical nonlinearity and thermal stability has been examined. It was found that relative to the normal polyene bridges, chromophores with confirmationally locked bridges exhibit improved thermal stability without a significant change in optical nonlinearity. A series of chromophores containing diarylamino donors have been synthesized and exhibit large optical nonlinearities, good thermal-thermal stabilities and enhance photochemical stabilities relative to compounds with dialkylamino donors. Functionalized versions of these chromophores have been synthesized for covalent incorporation into high performance polymers, for electro-optic applications.

Book excerpt: Organic semiconducting chromophores have been used for a wide variety of electronic, optoelectronic, and biological applications. They offer solutions to global problems including the need for renewable energy and new and improved medical therapeutics and diagnostics. In optoelectronics, organic semiconductors can function as light harvesting materials in traditional photovoltaics (PVs) and transparent photovoltaics (TPVs). TPVs utilize organic semiconductors to absorb near-infrared and ultra-violet light, allowing visible light to pass through the device, and can be integrated with surfaces otherwise inaccessible for traditional PVs. In medical therapeutics and diagnostics, organic semiconducting chromophores function as active agents in light-based treatments such as photodynamic therapy, or as highly fluorescent imaging agents to aid in the detection of illnesses. The first portion of this thesis details three projects focused on PVs. To begin, four new organic salt semiconductors, comprised of an organic chromophore and a counterion, are demonstrated in PVs. Device data is analyzed with experimental and computational methods to reveal a strong correlation between the total charge character on the chromophore and the carrier mobility in bulk films. In the second project, high efficiency TPVs are fabricated with a selectively near infrared absorbing polymer and non-fullerene acceptor via layer-by-layer deposition. TPVs achieved a power conversion efficiency of 8.8%, average visible transmittance of 40.9%, and light utilization efficiency of 3.6%, among the highest reported. Using the layer-by-layer approach, the impact of the full range of polymer thickness on electronic and optical device performance is evaluated. The last PV project presents the first demonstration of graphene nanoribbons as an active material in PVs with a detailed analysis of underlying exciton diffusion and charge collection mechanisms. The second portion of this thesis demonstrates the translation of a series of fluorescent organic salts with various counterions developed as PV materials in the first half of the thesis into a platform for photodynamic therapy and fluorescent imaging. Organic salts are formulated into nanoparticles and found to selectively accumulate in tumor cells, where the counterion tunes the frontier energy levels and the toxicity of the salt. Organic chromophores paired with small, hard counterions are found to be cytotoxic while bulky and often halogenated counterions cause the salts to be nontoxic at high dosages, ideal agents for bioimaging. Between the two extremes are several organic salts that are selectively phototoxic and are excellent candidates for photodynamic therapy. Organic salt nanoparticles are characterized with a variety of spectroscopic techniques to understand the size and optical properties. Subsequently, organic salts are demonstrated as effective active agents for treating cancer via photodynamic therapy in a mouse model. Collectively, we demonstrate a vast range of processing, characterization, and applications for new organic semiconductors in two key fields that are united by their molecular chemistry.
