Book excerpt: Several nanometer-scale oxide inclusions were added to Bi2Sr2CaCu2O(subscript x) high-temperature superconductors to determine their effectiveness in creating intragranular flux-pinning sites. Powder pellets were fabricated and heat treated by partial-melt processing. Effects of the additives on melting response, superconducting properties, and microstructural development were examined. Al2O3 additions exhibited the most promise for forming stable pinning centers, ZrO2 and SnO2 additions were moderately promising, TiO2, Fe2O3, and ZnO additions were less promising, and Y2O3 additions destroyed superconductivity.

Book excerpt: After the discovery of type-II HTS, focus is to develop these materials for power applications. One of the problems has been that magnetic flux is not completely expelled but rather contained within magnetic fluxons, whose motion stops larger supercurrents. It's known that the critical current of these materials can be enhanced by incorporating a high density of extended defects to act as pinning centres for the fluxons. YBa2Cu3O7 (YBCO or 123) is the most promising material for such applications at higher temperatures. Pinning is optimized when the size of the defects approaches the superconducting coherence length (̃2-4nm for YBCO at temperatures ≤ 77 K) and when the areal number density of defects is of the order of (H/2) x 1011 cm-2, where H is the applied magnetic field in tesla. Such a high density has been hard to get by material-processing methods that keep a nanosize defect, except through irradiation. Here we report a method for achieving a dispersion of ̃8-nm-sized nanoparticles in YBCO with a high number density, which increases critical current (at 77 K) by a factor of two to three for high magnetic fields.

The material should be suitable for use in graduate level courses on superconductivity. An introduction to high-To superconductivity must be based on the fundamental physical principles of normal-state electrical conductivity and the well-known characteristics of conventional superconductors. In Chapter 2 this background is provided. Crystal structures, anisotropic properties and general trends of the critical temperatures of the cuprate superconductors are described in Chapters 3 and 4. The processing of superconductor powders addressed in Chapter 5 affects considerably the current-carrying capacity of high-T. wires. The air we breathe was first liquefied in 1883 by a Polish scientist named Olszewski. Ten years later he and a British scientist, Sir James Dewar, liquefied hydrogen. Helium, the last of the so-caBed permanent gases, was finally liquefied by the Dutch physicist Kamerlingh Onnes in 1908. Thus, by the beginning of the twentieth century the door had been opened to astrange new world of experimentation in which aB substances, except liquid helium, are solids and where the absolute temperature is only a few microdegrees away. However, the point on the temperature scale at which refrigeration in the ordinary sense of the term ends and cryogenics begins has ne ver been weB defined. Most workers in the field have chosen to restrict cryogenics to a tem perature range below -150°C (123 K). This is a reasonable dividing line since the normal boiling points of the more permanent gases, such as helium, hydrogen, neon, nitrogen, oxygen, and air, lie below this temperature, while the more common refrigerants have boiling points that are above this temperature. Cryogenic engineering is concerned with the design and development of low-temperature systems and components.
