Excerpt: ...trachoma where we found the trachoma inclusions coupled with the fact of their morphologic similarity leads us to conclude that bacillus and inclusion are probably identical in papillary trachoma. At any rate, the fact that we have found this type of bacillus present in the vast majority of secreting eyes of our New York City school children (also in the cases examined of the Ellis Island immigrants) is very significant. We know that this type of bacillus produces acute and subacute inflammations; we know that it may produce elsewhere chronic inflammation with the formation of connective tissue, and we know that it may produce a growth in pure culture like the trachoma inclusions, therefore, the evidence is strongly in favor of its being the cause of a connective-tissue-forming conjunctivitis or of trachoma. The immediate practical deduction is that there should be absolute isolation of all secreting cases, and that acute conditions, especially, should be followed up and all precautions taken to keep such cases from reinfection.
