Book Synopsis Analysis of Water Resource Systems by : L. Votruba
Download or read book Analysis of Water Resource Systems written by L. Votruba and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1988-09-01 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water resource systems research provides a basis for rational water management in large basins. The design and operation of water resource systems are both the most complicated and the most important tasks of water management. This book deals with the basic issues involved in the application of systems sciences to water management.A survey of the systems sciences (the general systems theory, cybernetics, systems engineering, operations research and systems analysis) is presented, as well as the methods for water resource systems analysis and for water resource systems analysis and for their evaluation. The mathematical methods used in systems theory have been given detailed treatment. Linear and dynamic programming have been used as models of optimal programming. Since many practical tasks require the simulation models of water resource systems, apart from their principles and a detailed description, the simulation language for computing programming has been included. Other methods of operations research and their application to water resource systems have been analysed and evaluated. Some of these are: models of inventory theory, models of queuing theory, graphs, network analysis, and some special methods like the out-of-kilter algorithm, the chance-constrained model and the chance-constrained model combined with the simluation model. One chapter is devoted to information and information systems in water management. The final part of the book deals with prospects for water resource systems development. The book is intended for engineers and decision-makers involved in projects, operation and research. However, it can be used by students in high schools, technical universities and by graduate students. It will serve as an up-to-date source of information about the principles and methodology of water resource analysis and design.

Book Synopsis Water Management: the Decision Making Process by : Dr. Randy White
Download or read book Water Management: the Decision Making Process written by Dr. Randy White and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2014-01-30 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The scarcity of potable water in both urban and rural settings requires that key decision-makers in water management explore innovative and timely solutions. However, the range of solutions currently under consideration are not well understood or documented in the literature. To fill this gap, this study used in-depth, semi-structured, open-ended interviews (n=7) to explore water managers knowledge and reasoning about solutions to water shortage, including practical considerations about cost and sustainability of water conservation and conversion. Findings revealed that water managers knowledge of potential solutions largely revolve around conservation and desalination of brackish water to produce short-term potable water. Water managers recommend that investment in and expansion of existing desalination technologies like reverse osmosis constitute a promising solution to the growing crisis of global water shortages. This study provided a preliminary understanding of practical barriers and facilitators considered by water managers in their search for long-term water management solutions.
Book Synopsis Groundwater Optimization Handbook by : Richard C. Peralta
Download or read book Groundwater Optimization Handbook written by Richard C. Peralta and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2012-04-26 with total page 523 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Existing and impending water shortages argue for improving water quantity and quality management. Groundwater Optimization Handbook: Flow, Contaminant Transport, and Conjunctive Management helps you formulate and solve groundwater optimization problems to ensure sustainable supplies of adequate quality and quantity. It shows you how to more effectively use simulation-optimization (S-O) modeling, an economically valuable groundwater management tool that couples simulation models with mathematical optimization techniques. Written for readers of varying familiarity with groundwater hydrology and mathematical optimization, the handbook approaches complex problems realistically. Its techniques have been applied in many legal settings, with produced strategies providing up to 57% improvement over those developed without S-O modeling. These techniques supply constructible designs, planning and management strategies, and metrics for performance-based contracts. Learn how to: Recognize opportunities for applying S-O models Lead client, agency, and consultant personnel through the strategy design and adaptation process Formulate common situations as clear deterministic/stochastic and single/multiobjective mathematical optimization problems Distinguish between problem nonlinearities resulting from physical system characteristics versus management goals Create an S-O model appropriate for your specific needs or select an existing transferrable model Develop acceptable feasible solutions and compute optimal solutions Quantify tradeoffs between multiple objectives Evaluate and adapt a selected optimal strategy, or use it as a metric for comparison Drawing on the author’s numerous real-world designs and more than 30 years of research, consulting, and teaching experience, this practical handbook supplies design procedures, detailed flowcharts, solved problems, lessons learned, and diverse applications. It guides you through the maze of multiple objectives, constraints, and uncertainty to calculate the best strategies for managing flow, contamination, and conjunctive use of groundwater and surface water. Ancillary materials are available from the Downloads tab on the book page at www.crcpress.com.

Book Synopsis Water Resources Allocation by : Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD)
Download or read book Water Resources Allocation written by Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD) and published by IWA Publishing. This book was released on 2015-05-15 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water resources allocation determines who is able to use water resources, how, when and where. It directly affects the value (economic, ecological, socio-cultural) that individuals and society obtain from water resources. This report overviews how allocation works in a range of countries and how the performance of allocation arrangements can be improved to adjust to changing conditions. Capturing information from 27 OECD countries and key partner economies, the report presents key findings from the OECD Survey of Water Resources Allocation and case studies of successful allocation reform. It provides practical policy guidance for water allocation in the form of a "health check", which can be used to assess the performance of current arrangements and manage the transition to improved regimes.
Book Synopsis A review of management strategies for salt-prone land and water resources in Iran by : Asad Sarwar Qureshi
Download or read book A review of management strategies for salt-prone land and water resources in Iran written by Asad Sarwar Qureshi and published by IWMI. This book was released on 2007-11-16 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Approximately half of the irrigated area of Iran falls under different types of salt-affected soils and average yield losses may be as high as 50 percent. Slightly and moderately salt-affected soils are mostly found on the piedmonts at the foot of the Elburz (Alborz) Mountains in the northern part of the country. The soils having severe to extreme salinity are predominantly located in the Central Plateau, the Khuzestan and Southern Coastal Plains and the Caspian Coastal Plain. The process of salinization of the surface water resources is mainly due to natural conditions, and to a lesser extent, to the discharge of drainage water into the river systems. Estimates show that about 6.7 km3 of brackish water flow annually through 12 major rivers. There is no straightforward solution to the complex problems of salt-induced soil and water resources degradation in Iran. The approaches addressing the management of these resources need to be multidimensional and must take into account biophysical and environmental conditions of the target areas as well as livelihood aspects of the associated communities.
