Book excerpt: It is also the mandate of the FOC to discuss the application of oceanographic information to the analysis of the distribution and production patterns in the exploited stocks. [...] The needs for monitoring of the physical and biological oceanographic variables in the Atlantic Zone were recognized early by the FOC and discussions on the implementation of a monitoring program can be traced back in time up to 1994. [...] Subsequently, the Atlantic Zone Monitoring Program (AZMP) was initiated in the late 90's (see below) and the AZMP has now the responsibility for providing the FOC with the annual environmental (both physical and biological) overviews from which are presented the reports on the state of the oceanic environment. [...] Although it was implemented only recently, it was felt that there is now a need to evaluate the relevance of the data produced by the AZMP and to encourage the use of these data products, or additional products, in the estimation of the abundance and the investigations into the causes of variation in the abundance and the productivity of the marine resources in the Atlantic Zone. [...] The workshop was co-sponsored by the FOC and the AZMP of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO).

Download or read book Proceedings of the Seventeenth Annual Meeting of the Atlantic Zone Monitoring Program (AZMP). written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2015, the AZMP scientists reconvened in Montréal from March 16th to 19th to continue work on the synthesis, discuss logistic and operational issues, review recent oceanographic conditions within the zone, update the plans for the integration and synthesis exercise, and finalize the plan of work for the current year. [...] The key components for the implementation of this process were then identified as: 1) Use of BioChem as the centralized data source; 2) Development and implementation of R scripts as common computing environment for the extraction and processing of the data; 3) Adoption of a platform for the sharing and synchronization of scripts among collaborators; and 4) Identification of standard data products [...] However, two main issues remain with the use of BioChem as a centralized data source: 1) The timeline for loading the current year data into BioChem; and 2) The quality of the data already loaded or in the process of being loaded into BioChem. [...] Code Sharing and Synchronization Github was selected for the sharing and synchronization of the scripts developed for the AZMP data processing and generation of AZMP data products. [...] GENERAL MODEL DEVELOPMENT IN THE ATLANTIC ZONE - RESULT AND ANALYSES - DAVE BRICKMAN Collaborators: Brendan DeTracey, Z. Wang Two Nucleus for European Modelling of the Ocean - Océan Parallisé (NEMO-OPA) circulation models of the AZMP region are run by researchers at BIO: 1) A model of the entire North Atlantic ocean, from which the AZMP region from the Labrador Sea to the Gulf of Maine is extracte.

Book Synopsis Zooplankton Ecology by : Maria Alexandra Teodosio
Download or read book Zooplankton Ecology written by Maria Alexandra Teodosio and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-11-19 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims at providing students and researchers an advanced integrative overview on zooplankton ecology, covering marine and freshwater organisms, from microscopic phagotrophic protists, to macro-jellyfishes and active fish larvae. The first book section addresses zooplanktonic organisms and processes, the second section is devoted to zooplankton spatial and temporal distribution patterns and trophic dynamics, and the final section is dedicated to emergent methodological approaches (e.g., omics). Book chapters include comprehensive synthesis, observational and manipulative studies, and sediment-based analysis, a vibrant imprint of benthic-pelagic coupling and ecosystem connectivity. Most chapters also address the impacts of anticipated environmental changes (e.g., warming, acidification).
Book Synopsis Climate Change and Indigenous Peoples in the United States by : Julie Koppel Maldonado
Download or read book Climate Change and Indigenous Peoples in the United States written by Julie Koppel Maldonado and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-04-05 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With a long history and deep connection to the Earth’s resources, indigenous peoples have an intimate understanding and ability to observe the impacts linked to climate change. Traditional ecological knowledge and tribal experience play a key role in developing future scientific solutions for adaptation to the impacts. The book explores climate-related issues for indigenous communities in the United States, including loss of traditional knowledge, forests and ecosystems, food security and traditional foods, as well as water, Arctic sea ice loss, permafrost thaw and relocation. The book also highlights how tribal communities and programs are responding to the changing environments. Fifty authors from tribal communities, academia, government agencies and NGOs contributed to the book. Previously published in Climatic Change, Volume 120, Issue 3, 2013.

Book Synopsis The Structuring of Organizations by : Henry Mintzberg
Download or read book The Structuring of Organizations written by Henry Mintzberg and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Synthesizes the empirical literature on organizationalstructuring to answer the question of how organizations structure themselves --how they resolve needed coordination and division of labor. Organizationalstructuring is defined as the sum total of the ways in which an organizationdivides and coordinates its labor into distinct tasks. Further analysis of theresearch literature is neededin order to builda conceptualframework that will fill in the significant gap left by not connecting adescription of structure to its context: how an organization actuallyfunctions. The results of the synthesis are five basic configurations (the SimpleStructure, the Machine Bureaucracy, the Professional Bureaucracy, theDivisionalized Form, and the Adhocracy) that serve as the fundamental elementsof structure in an organization. Five basic parts of the contemporaryorganization (the operating core, the strategic apex, the middle line, thetechnostructure, and the support staff), and five theories of how it functions(i.e., as a system characterized by formal authority, regulated flows, informalcommunication, work constellations, and ad hoc decision processes) aretheorized. Organizations function in complex and varying ways, due to differing flows -including flows of authority, work material, information, and decisionprocesses. These flows depend on the age, size, and environment of theorganization; additionally, technology plays a key role because of itsimportance in structuring the operating core. Finally, design parameters aredescribed - based on the above five basic parts and five theories - that areused as a means of coordination and division of labor in designingorganizational structures, in order to establish stable patterns of behavior.(CJC).
