Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is written by two world-recognized experts in radio frequency (RF) systems for particle accelerators and is based on many years of experience in dealing with the multipactor phenomenon. The authors introduce and review multipactor in RF cavities for scientists and engineers working in the field of accelerator physics and technology. The multipactor phenomenon of unintended electron avalanches occurs in the RF cavities commonly and quite often is a performance-limiting factor. The book starts with an Introductory Overview which contains historical observations and brief description of most common aspects of the phenomenon. Part I deals with the multipactor in a flat gap. It starts with description of the dynamics of electrons, derivation of the stability condition and analyzing influence of several factors on the multipactor. Then, the initial considerations are extended to derive a generalized phase stability and finally a particular case, called ping-pong multipacting, is considered. The part one is concluded with a brief review of computer codes used in multipactor simulations. Part II is dedicated to the multipactor in crossed RF fields, the typical situation in accelerating cavities. Two cases of MP are considered: a two-point multipactor near the cavity equator in elliptical cavities and a one-point multipactor. Part III describes optimization of the cavity shapes geared toward designing multipactor-free structures. The book will serve as an importance reference on multipactor for those involved in developing and operating radio frequency cavities for particle accelerators.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book begins with an overview of the RF control concepts and strategies. It then introduces RF system models for optimizing the system parameters to satisfy beam requirements and for controller design. In addition to systematically discussing the RF field control algorithms, it presents typical architecture and algorithms for RF signal detection and actuation. Further, the book addresses the analysis of the noise and nonlinearity in LLRF systems to provide a better understanding of the performance of the RF control system and to specify the performance requirements for different parts of the RF system. Today, accelerators require increased RF stability and more complex operation scenarios, such as providing beam for different beam lines with various parameters, and as a result LLRF systems are becoming more critical and complex. This means that LLRF system developers need have extensive knowledge of the entire accelerator complex and a wide range of other areas, including RF and digital signal processing, noise analysis, accelerator physics and systems engineering. Providing a comprehensive introduction to the basic theories, algorithms and technologies, this book enables LLRF system developers to systematically gain the knowledge required to specify, design and implement LLRF systems and integrate them with beam acceleration. It is intended for graduate students, professional engineers and researchers in accelerator physics.

Book excerpt: This volume captures the contents of the talks given at the Workshop on Applications of High Intensity Proton Accelerators held at Fermilab Oct 19ndash;21, 2009. This workshop brought together experts from a variety of disciplines to explore new and profound ways proton accelerators can be used in the future. The workshop explored uses of such a proton source for producing intense muon, kaon and neutrino beams as well as using the intense protons for new forms of nuclear reactors that go by the name Accelerator Driven Sub-critical systems that promise to increase our available nuclear fuel supply by orders of magnitude while at the same time solving the nuclear waste problem. Intense proton beams can also be used to produce short-lived nuclear isotopes that are important in the medical industry.

Book excerpt: The first Asian Accelerator School (AAS) was organised to show the rapid development of accelerator sciences based on electron storage rings in Asia. At present seven electronOCopositron colliders are operational in the world, and two of them are located in Asia: KEKB (the KEK B-Factory) at KEK in Japan, and BEPC at IHEP in China. It is also notable that one-third of the operating synchrotron light sources are Asian machines. To further improve the performance of electron storage rings, the use of superconducting magnets and cavities is of vital importance; therefore the curriculum of AAS was arranged not only to teach the basic physics of storage rings but also to give students a basic knowledge of superconducting technology."

Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the Topical course on Frontiers of Accelerator Technology, jointly organized by the CERN Accelerator School, the KEK Accelerator School and the US Particle Accelerator School. It was held at Maui, Hawaii, November 3-9, 1994. The purpose was to disseminate knowledge on the latest ideas and developments in the technology of particle accelerators by bringing together world known experts and younger scientists in the field. It was intended for individuals with professional interest in accelerator physics and technology, for graduate students, for post-docs and for those working in accelerator-based sciences. The motivation to conceive and build accelerators comes from a most fundamental need of man — to understand and control the world around us. With beams and their associated accelerators, scientists and engineers can gain understanding of the nature of matter and modify matter not possible by other means. Areas already influenced by the developments in accelerator technology are high energy and nuclear physics, atomic and molecular physics, condensed matter physics and the biological sciences. There is also a growing number of applications in medicine and industry. The program was as follows: lectures in superconductivity, magnets, RF, feedback, instrumentation, high power sources, beam stability and novel accelerator techniques; seminars on accelerator applications, the role of government and industry, and perspectives on future technology; round table: the high energy accelerator frontier; four short courses, each including 8 hours of lectures, problems and tutorials on superconducting magnets, superconducting rf, instrumentation and linacs. This book aims to summarize all the currently available knowledge on the technology driving the development of particle beams for science, medicine, and industry. It is the most up-to-date and unique collection of information on this technology presently available.

Book excerpt: Electrostatic ion accelerators and associated superconducting linacs were the class of accelerators discussed. Continuing the trend of the last several meetings in this series, two sessions were needed to report current developments in superconducting ion accelerators. Also, many interesting recent developments were reported in a session devoted to ECR ion sources. Several applications received attention. A session was devoted to atomic mass spectroscopy. Both because of the venue and the timeliness of the topic, two sessions and a number of poster presentations focussed on the technology needed for beams of exotic, radioactive nuclei.
